Republic Day 2023 Gets Crowded With 3-Way Box Office Clash

Mumbai, February 21 - The box office clashes have become inevitable during the covid-19 pandemic, which has left the film industry with no other choice. While the pandemic is easing out, its effect can still be felt in the new release dates of the films, which are finding it difficult to get a solo release window in theaters. ## While everyone knows what lies ahead throughout this year as far as movies are concerned, the following year also looks super crowded, especially the first few months. It will all begin from Republic Day, which will see a few biggies taking on one another at the box office, and three of them have already been confirmed. ## Among the first Bollywood films to confirm Republic Day 2023 release, was Hrithik Roshan and Deepika Padukone-starrer "Fighter". Directed by Siddharth Anand, the movie is India's first-ever aerial action-thriller franchise, which will commence filming this summer. It will be produced by Mamta Anand, Ajit Andhare, Ramon Chibb, and Anku Pande under the banners of MARFLIX and Viacom18 Studios. ## Luv Ranjan's yet-untitled romantic-comedy, starring Ranbir Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor, will meet "Fighter" on Republic Day 2023 at the box office. The movie was announced a long time ago, and the filming for the same had begun in February 2021. Produced by Luv Ranjan and Ankur Garg and presented by Bhushan Kumar of T-series, the movie also stars Dimple Kapadia and Boney Kapoor in key roles. ## The latest film to join the Republic Day 2023 race is John Abraham-fronted "Tehran", which was announced on Feb. 22, 2021. The movie is inspired by true events and it will be based in Tehran, the capital of Iran. Mumbai, February 22 - Bollywood star John Abraham has teamed up with Dinesh Vijan of Maddock Films for his next movie, titled "Tehran". Inspired by true events, the action thriller will be directed by Arun Gopalan and produced by Dinesh Vijan, Shobhna Yadav, and Sandeep Leyzell under the banners of Maddock Films and Bake My Cake. It is written by Ritesh Shah and Ashish P Verma.## John Abraham took to Twitter and shared the first look poster of the film. Despite getting mixed reviews from critics, the movie is garnering massive views on the streamer. ## The film, unsurprisingly, climbed to the number 1 spot in the following week (Feb. 14 - Feb. 20) with 7.1 million views. After 10 days, "Gehraiyaan" has gained 13.6 million views, becoming one of the most-watched Indian films during the same period. The viewership data are tracked by Ormax Media, a media consulting firm, which tracks viewership figures of the top releases across major platforms. ## Released on February 11, "Gehraiyaan" narrates the complexity of modern relationships. It had gained 6.5 million views in the first 3 days on Prime Video, landing in the second spot in the weekly viewership chart. The film also stars Siddhant Chaturvedi, Ananya Panday, and Dhairya Karwa in prominent roles.## Yami Gautam-fronted, a vigilante thriller film "A Thursday", was the second most-watched Indian title last week with 5.3 million views in a little over 3 days. It was released on Disney Plus Hotstar on February 17, skipping theatrical release. ## "The Great Indian Murder" on Disney Plus Hotstar scored 4.6 million views this past week and was the 3rd most-watched title. With 6.8 million views, the series was at number 1 during the week of Feb. 7 to Feb. 13. Mumbai, February 21 - The fans of Shah Rukh Khan have eagerly been waiting for his big-screen comeback for a long time now. He was last seen in Anand L Rai's 2018 film "Zero", which was a box office failure. The superstar took some time off before rolling out his comeback movie, which is Yash Raj Films' "Pathan". ## Directed by Siddharth Anand, "Pathan" has been in the news since late 2020. If everything had gone well, the movie would have been released in theaters by now, but thanks to the covid-19 pandemic, the production of the film kept getting delayed. But now, it won't take too much more time as the shoot of the film is in its last leg and will be completed soon. ## Interestingly, the official announcement of "Pathan" is yet to be made by YRF. It was reported that the movie will be announced officially in January 2022, but there was no such announcement. Mumbai, February 21 - The Indian Marathi cinema has been on a roll for the last few months with back-to-back box office success. After earning hit status with films like Jhimma, and Pandu, the recently released Marathi movies, "Lochya Zaala Re", and "Pawankhind" are putting strong show at the box office. ## Pawankhind, directed by Digpal Lanjekar, is particularly has created riots at the box office and become another Marathi success story. Released on February 18, the historical drama kept mounting over the weekend after taking a start of over Rs. 1 crore. After Rs. 1.15 crore on Friday, the film showed a jump of 80% for Rs. 2.08 crores on Saturday and later closed the weekend with Rs. 2.80 crore (+34%) on Sunday, taking a 3-day total to Rs. 6.08 crores. ## Based on the life of Maratha warrior, Baji Prabhu Deshpande, "Pawankhind" has done very well in the B and C centers where it recorded Housefull shows at the single screens. The first-week collection of Chinmay Mandlekar-starrer is eyeing to finish over Rs. 10 crores, which will be a phenomenal result for the makers. The budget for the film is in the range of Rs. 7-10 crores. ## Rajkummar Rao and Bhumi Pednekar-fronted social comedy-drama "Badhaai Do" showed an upward trend over the second weekend. After collecting Rs. 75 lakh on the second Friday, the Harshavardhan Kulkarni-directed jumped by 105% on the second Saturday for Rs. 1.54 crores, followed by a 29.87% jump on the second Sunday for Rs. 2 crores. The total 10-days domestic collection of "Badhaai Do" stands at Rs. 16.89 crores. Overseas, the film has grossed approx. 3 crores so far. ## Serving as a spiritual sequel to the 2018 film "Badhaai Ho", "Badhaai Do" revolves around a couple in a lavender marriage. The movie received positive reviews from critics, praising the performances of the lead cast, direction, and theme. The Sony Picture's video game adaptation, based on the popular PlayStation game series from publisher Naughty Dog, "Uncharted" topped the 3-day domestic weekend with $44.2 million. ## Tom Holland has proved his star power and also answered many questions that he can also deliver at the box office outside "Spider-Man" movies. The 4-day President Weekend for "Uncharted" is projected to reach $51 million domestically (North America), which are significant box office numbers, considering the fact that the movie has been sidelined by critics with just a 39% score on Rotten Tomatoes. ## Internationally, the Ruben Fleischer-directed film is even more strong after debuting in the 47 new markets with $55.4 million. Earlier, the movie opened in the 15 international markets and had grossed $22.6 million, pushing its overseas haul to $88 million. The global total for "Uncharted" currently stands at $132.2 million through Sunday. ## Among the new international markets, France led all launches for Uncharted with $6.3 million followed by Australia with $4 million. Germany lands at number 3 with $3.4 million, followed by Italy with $3.1 million and Korea at $3 million. In India, "Uncharted" has grossed approx. 880K in the first 3-days at the box office.## The United Kingdom is leading the overseas chart with $16.4 million. In more happy news for Sony Pictures, "Uncharted" dated March 14 in China, which is the biggest movie market in the world. ## Meanwhile, Tom Holland's "Spider-Man: No Way Home" is showing no sign of slowing down as it grossed $7.2 million in its 10th domestic weekend, landing at number 3 this weekend, pushing total domestic cume at $770 million. Internationally, Marvel/Sony's superhero flick has reached $1.06 billion, for global cume to $1.83 billion, that too without China. Los Angeles, February 19 - Tom Holland is proving his worth at the box office as his latest film, "Uncharted", also featuring Mark Wahlberg, has surpassed expectation and opened to a strong $15.4 million on Friday at the domestic (North America) box office. ## The Sony Pictures' video game adaptation, based on the popular PlayStation game series from publisher Naughty Dog, "Uncharted" is projected to gross $40-$44 million in the 3-day weekend. "Uncharted" is doing far more business than expected thanks to younger males who are frequently visiting theaters, reports The Hollywood Reporter. ## Directed by Ruben Fleischer, the movie did not receive well by the critics, giving just 39% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, it is being loved by the audiences, who gave it a B+ CinemaScore and 88% score on Tomatometer. The strong box office performance of "Uncharted" also gives an indication of how critics' reviews have become overrated, as suggested by director Ruben Fleischer, who called critics' reviews surprising for being so negative. ## The $120 million budgeted film was conceived as an origin story for the game series' globe-trotting adventurer Nathan Drake, played by Holland. Nathan begins the story as a bartender before he is recruited by seasoned treasure hunter Victor "Sully" Sullivan (Mark Wahlberg) to recover a fortune amassed by Ferdinand Magellan and lost 500 years ago. ## What starts as a heist job for the duo becomes a globe-trotting, white-knuckle race to reach the prize before the ruthless Santiago Moncada (Antonio Banderas), who believes he and his family are the rightful heirs.## Meanwhile, Holland's "Spider-Man: No Way Home", which opened in December 2021, is still putting strong legs at the domestic box office. Hyderabad, February 19 - The advance booking for Pawan Kalyan-starrer upcoming Telugu movie "Bheemla Nayak", scheduled to release on February 25th, has reportedly been put on hold in Telangana state over service charge by the online ticketing portals. ## According to a report by Great Andhra, the Telugu film industry has taken a strong stand against online ticketing portals for abnormal ticket prices. It is learnt that the film industry is not happy with Book My Show and other platforms for charging high service charges which are resulting in low footfalls in theaters. ## The report has suggested that exhibitors have been asked to sell the cinema tickets only at the booking counters in theatres till the issue is settled. This decision has been taken to avoid the huge burden of higher ticket prices on audiences and encourage them to visit theaters to watch movies. ## Confirming this, Sirish, the distributor for Pawan Kalyan-starrer "Bheemla Nayak" in the Nizam area, said (via Great Andhra) that "For some days, the sale of tickets would be done at the counters in the theatres". ## In the past few years, ticket prices have gone up abnormally due to the higher commission charge by Book My Show. This has resulted in a reduction in theatre footfall. So, the industry has felt it would be better to revert back to the old system of selling tickets at the booking counters in theatres. Hyderabad, February 19 - Telugu superstar Pawan Kalyan's upcoming movie, "Bheemla Nayak" is getting a lot of attention. The action thriller, which is gearing up for the theatrical release on February 25th, also stars Rana Daggubati along with Nithya Menen, and Samyuktha Menon in prominent roles. ## According to the latest reports, the makers of "Bheemla Nayak" have already cracked a deal for the film's post-theatrical OTT release. The movie will reportedly be streaming on two OTT platforms after completing its theatrical run. ## While the official confirmation is yet to be made, the movie has reportedly been sold for a whopping price of Rs. 70 crores for the digital premiere. Disney+Hotstar and Telugu OTT platform, Aha Video has bagged the streaming rights. However, it is not yet confirmed which OTT platform will have premiere first rights. The big-screen magic will be shining bright again after the moments of ups and downs in the last two years of the covid-19 pandemic. ## The last weekend of February 2022 will see three of the most-awaited Indian movies hitting theaters in the form of Ajith Kumar's "Valimai" on Feb. 24, Pawan Kalyan's "Bheemla Nayak" on Feb. 25, and Alia Bhatt-fronted "Gangubai Kathiawadi" on Feb. 25. Interestingly, all three movies will have multilingual releases, thus making things tough for one another at the box office. ## Though there are a couple of other movies too to release during the same weekend such as the Telugu movie "Aadaalloo Meeku Johaarlu", starring Sharwanand and Rashmika Mandanna, the real battle to emerge box office king, however, will be among the three aforementioned films, especially between "Valimai", and "Bheemla Nayak". ## As far as the box office numbers are concerned, Pawan Kalyan and Rana Daggubati-starrer Telugu movie "Bheemla Nayak", might outshine the other releases. The movie is seen as the potential highest-grossing film for Pawan Kalyan. It will also be released in the Hindi dubbed version, however, that is unlikely to add extra fuel to it since there is no sign of promotion in Hindi yet. But who knows what destiny has in its store for this biggie. ## Pawan Kalyan's last film, "Vakeel Saab", opened to huge Rs. 40.10 crores net at the Indian box office. It is the biggest opening day record for a Pawan Kalyan movie to date, but it might be broken by "Bheemla Nayak". The upcoming actioner is creating more hype and buzz is surreal around it that makes this big-ticket a movie to watch out for at the box office. ## When it comes to hype and buzz, no other movie can match Ajith Kumar's Tamil tentpole "Valimai", which will be released a day before Pawan Kalyan-fronted. Ajith is one of the biggest stars in Tamil Nadu and his movies often gained a lot of attention. "Valimai" might become Ajith Kumar's biggest grosser of all time. His "Viswasam" is currently the biggest film with a worldwide collection of approx. 200 crores. ## "Valimai", directed by H Vinoth, will also be released in Hindi, Telugu, and Kannada dubbed versions. It might make noise at the Hindi box office where it has to compete with Alia Bhatt-fronted "Gangubai Kathiawadi". In the Hindi circuit, "Valimai" is expected to release on over 1000 screens. It could open between Rs. 30-35 crores at the Indian box office.## The Sanjay Leela Bhansali-directed "Gangubai Kathiawadi" is sure to take a good opening. Though Bollywood movies except, "Sooryavanshi", have struggled to take a good start during the covid-19 pandemic, "Gangubai Kathiawadi" could change that trend and surprise everyone. The trailer and songs of the film are doing good and the on-ground promotion is also picking the pace. Superstar Ajay Devgn has played a cameo role and his presence will surely boost its box office chances. If all goes well, the movie could open between Rs. 10-15 cores at the Hindi box office.
