Global Box Office Reached $26 Billion In 2022
London, January 6 - The global box office collection for 2022 reached nearly $26 billion, $25.9 billion, according to Gower Street Analytics (via Deadline).## The worldwide box office in 2022 fell short of the projection of $32 billion but jumped by 27% from the previous year. The films, outside Hollywood, grossed $18.4 billion, including China, a 16% increase from last year at current exchange rates. ## Without China, which is the biggest movie box office market in the world, the collection outside Hollywood is estimated at $14.1B, a 55% hike in 2021. The Hollywood box office collection for 2022 hit $7.5 billion, up by 65% from 2021. ## The box office in 2022 showed a big sign of fast recovery but the numbers are still behind the pre-covid-19 era. The worldwide box office numbers in 2022 are 35% below the pre-pandemic three-year average (2017-2019), causing a loss of approximately $14 billion at current exchange rates, per Deadline.## The projection of $32 billion worldwide in 2022 was dependent on China's box office, but due to the covid-19, it is one of three markets that finished the year at a deficit versus 2021. China grossed an estimated $4.33 billion (-36% vs 2021), says the analysis.## Europe, the Middle East, and Africa generated $7.1 billion (-31% against the pre-pandemic average/+52% over 2021). Asia Pacific (excluding China) delivered $5.2 billion (-26%/+49%). Latin America brought an estimated $1.8 billion (-30% vs pre-pandemic average), a whopping 87% increase on 2021.## Top tracked international markets for Gower Street were China ($4.33B), Japan ($1.52B), the UK ($1.2B), France ($1.06B), and Korea ($900K).
