Kochi, May 22 - The 7-years of long-standing record of Mohanlal-fronted "Pulimurugan" finally bites the dust as the latest Mollywood sensation 2018 has become the all-time highest-grossing Malayalam movie at the worldwide box office. ## The all-time blockbuster movie has grossed approx. 137.50 crores in just 17 days, and beats "Pulimurugan's" 137.35 crores (according to Friday Matinee) to become the highest-grossing film in the history of Malayalam cinema. ## The movie, directed by Jude Anthany Joseph, has grossed around 65.30 crores in Kerala, and in the next couple of days, it will become the 3rd biggest grosser in the state. The domestic collection of the movie outside Kerala is approx. 9 crores for a total of 74.20 crores domestic hall.## "2018" is already the highest-grossing Malayalam movie at the overseas box office with approx. 63.30 crore so far while it is also the highest-grossing Malayalam movie in the original Malayalam language globally.## Produced by Kavya Film Company, and PK Prime Production, "2018" is a survival thriller based on actual events during the 2018 Kerala floods. Kochi, May 20 - The all-time blockbuster Malayalam movie continues to amaze the audiences and is having a super solid trend at the box office.## While the movie is performing exceptionally well at the box office, the overseas collections are rather stunning. Internationally, "2018" has grossed 56.60 crores in 15 days, which is an all-time record for a Malayalam movie. ## Directed by Jude Anthany Joseph, "2018" has crossed the lifetime overseas collection of Mohanlal's "Lucifer" which grossed approx. 50 crores in 2019, to become the highest-grossing Malayalam movie. Kochi, May 15 - The Malayalam film industry's search for the third worldwide 100 crores grosser finally ends after nearly four years as survival thriller 2018 has breached this historic milestone.## Directed by Jude Anthany Joseph, "2018" grossed approx. 100.20 crores through the second Monday (11 days) and becomes the fastest Malayalam movie to achieve the 100 crores worldwide gross milestone.## "2018" has taken just 11 days to breach the century mark. Mohanlal's "Lucifer", which was the last film to achieve this milestone, took 12 days for the same. The first Malayalam movie to gross 100 crores worldwide was also a Mohanlal-starrer, titled "Pulimurugan" (2016). ## The domestic collection of "2018" is approx 51.20 crores while the overseas collection is around 49 crores. Mumbai, May 10 - Malayalam star actor Tovino Thomas is on cloud nine after the massive success of his latest film 2018 which is based on the true events of the Kerala floods in 2018. The movie has grossed over 40 crores worldwide so far and now, the makers are gearing up to release it in other languages. ## Before "2018", Tovino Thomas made his way into the hearts of the nationwide audience with the fun critically acclaimed superhero movie Minnal Murali (2021). The audiences, however, were left disappointed that it didn't release in theaters after Netflix acquired rights for direct streaming. ## Since the movie turned into a huge success on OTT, Tovino confirmed in a recent interview that a sequel was in early development. Now, in an interview with Bollywood Hungama for "2018" promotion in Mumbai, the actor confirmed Minnal Murali 2 is being written, and this time, it will release only in theaters.## "We will release Minnal Murali 2 only in theaters. After it releases in the theaters, I want Netflix to acquire its OTT rights", said the actor.## The actor further said the movie was made keeping theaters in mind but due to the covid-19 pandemic and restrictions on theaters, it was not possible for the makers to release it on the big screens. Mumbai, November 19 - The covid-19 pandemic was a massive hurdle for the Indian film industry to ignore as films over the last two years were forced to take a different route other than the conventional theatrical way. ## While the makers initially had no choice but to opt for direct digital releases of their movies to prevent big losses as theaters were closed, no one can deny that the lack of patience in them not only left exhibitors in the doldrums but also made those filmmakers let the big opportunities to go.## One of the questionable decisions, which was heavily criticized by the Kerala theater association, was skipping the theatrical release of Mohanlal's highly-anticipated suspense thriller "Drishyam 2" as it was sold to Amazon Prime Video for direct release in February 2021.## Skipping the theatrical release of "Drishyam 2" might not be a tough decision for the makers back then as they hardly had an idea what they are going to lose later on. The latest Hindi remake of "Drishyam 2" has done what the original Malayalam movie wasn't even given the opportunity and that is scoring big bucks at the box office.## "Drishyam 2" Malayalam got an excellent response from critics and OTT audiences alike and it would have surely done wonders at the box office had it been released in theaters. The Hindi version, which was released on November 18, surpassed all expectations and took the opening of over 15 crores net with the 3-day opening weekend total finishing above 64 crores net, which is excellent, to say the least.## Very much like Bollywood at present, the Malayalam industry was also undergoing a big slump at the time of the "Drishyam 2" release as most films were skipping theatrical releases. It could have done the same as its remake is doing for Bollywood, giving a major relief. ## While the Malayalam filmmakers were too harsh towards the theatrical options back then, the other industries including Bollywood were also on the same path, leaving the box office biz gasping and on the verge of collapse.
