Kochi, December 11 - Dulquer Salmaan's patience and trust in the crime drama film "Kurup" paid off big-time as it is turned out to be 3rd highest-grossing Malayalam movie of all time. Due to the continuous delay in the release date caused by the covid-19 pandemic and restrictions of theaters, "Kurup" was reportedly gearing for a direct OTT release, but the makers later changed the plans and gave it a theatrical shot. ## While the official box office collection hasn't been revealed by the makers, the Srinath Rajendran-directed has comfortably crossed Rs. 80 crores worldwide gross, which makes it the highest-grossing film for Salmaan. It is only behind Mohanlal starring blockbusters, Lucifer and Pulimurugan, to have a such large collection in Malayalam. ## Meanwhile, after its blockbuster run at the box office, "Kurup" is gearing up for its second innings run on OTT. Despite getting mixed reviews from the critics, the crime thriller has been able to touch the heart of the audience, which is clearly visible as it crossed Rs. 75 crores at the worldwide box office, earning the status of one of the biggest Malayalam grossing films. ## Directed by Srinath Rajendran, "Kurup" was one of the films that didn't succumb to lucrative OTT price. Due to the second covid-19 wave, and the closure of theaters in Kerala, there were multiple reports claiming that the big-budget film was sold to a leading OTT platform for a hefty sum. The film is now ruling the box office as it turned out to be a blockbuster outing for the makers after crossing Rs. 50 crores worldwide. ## With the success of "Kurup" on one hand, Dulquer is gearing up for the release of his next film, "Hey Sinamika", which is a Tamil romantic comedy, directed by choreographer Brinda. Kochi, November 13 - If there is one particular Indian film industry that has been hit badly by the covid-19 pandemic as compared to the others, is the Malayalam film industry. The exhibitors and distributors of Kerala, however, have reasons to be disappointed with Malayalam filmmakers too, who continue to bypass theatrical releases in order to go the digital way. ## While many top Malayalam stars including Mohanlal, Prithviraj Sukumaran, and Fahadh Faasil among others have released their films directly on OTT platforms, Dulquer Salmaan waited for nearly a year to release his biographical-crime thriller film, "Kurup" in theaters. Based on the fugitive Sukumara Kurup, the film is produced by Salmaan himself under his banner Wayfarer Films in association with M Star Entertainments. ## The Kerala theater owners and distributors welcomed Salmaan's decision wholeheartedly and decided to give a maximum number of screens in the state as a mark of their gratitude. Salmaan enjoys a loyal fan-following among the Malayalam audiences and his "Kurup" was one of the most-awaited films. Released on November 12, "Kurup" is Malayalam industries' best foot forward to revive the industry and it hasn't disappointed at all. ## Directed by Srinath Rajendran, "Kurup" shattered box office records on an opening day in Kerala as well as overseas box office. It opened with a record ₹ 4.70 crores net for the Malayalam language and ₹ 90 lakhs for the other languages. Overseas, "Kurup" grossed ₹ 11.80 crores on an opening day, including ₹ 6.75 crores in the UAE alone, which is the biggest overseas start for a Malayalam film.## The day 2 box office numbers for "Kurup" are also estimated strong in India with a total of ₹ 6.6 crores gross. Kochi, the biggest market for a Malayalam film, contributed over ₹ 1.10 crores to the total collection in the first two days, which is a great showing, especially knowing the fact that only a 50% seating cap is allowed in Kerala. ## Moreover, "Kurup" has brought the Malayalam film industry back to its strong feet after nearly one and a half years. "Kurup", which also stars Indrajith Sukumaran, Sobhita Dhulipala, Shine Tom Chacko, and Sunny Wayne among others, is one of the first titles lined up to release in the coming months, including the biggest Malayalam film "Marakkar: Lion of the Arabian Sea", starring superstar Mohanlal. Kochi, June 18, 2021: The covid-19 pandemic has taken a heavy toll on the Indian film industries, especially, Malayalam. Due to the months of closure and lack of fresh content in cinemas, the Mollywood industry got hit hard, which is turning into money and job losses. The state government was also too late to allow theaters to reopen after the first wave, which kept audiences in check before they got some confidence to visit cinemas. ## When theaters in Kerala were allowed to reopen in January this year, they needed big stars to step up to revive the ailing Malayalam film industry. Their chances of some sort of relief were dented when superstar Mohanlal decided to release his long-awaited thriller film, Drishyam 2 directly on Amazon Prime Video, skipping its much-needed theatrical release. This move from Mohanlal, however, invited criticism from The Kerala Film Association, who called this move a selfish act by the superstar. ## Despite Drishyam 2's OTT release, theater owners were still hopeful for a quick recovery with an exciting upcoming slate of films. However, when good days were all set to shine all over again, the devastating second wave of the covid-19 made things further worse. The films which were slated for release in April and May, stand postponed as cinemas halls were shut again. ## It really became a game of patience and was always up to the filmmakers to blink first. And they did, Fahadh Faasil and Prithviraj Sukumaran - two of the biggest stars of Malayalam cinema, decided to release their most waited film, Maalik and Cold Case directly on OTTs, ditching theatrical release. Both the movies were held for theatrical releases for a long time but the prevailing situation of covid-19 in the state forced the makers to make the tough call. ## However, for theaters and exhibitors in Kerala, the OTT releases of Maalik and Cold Case are a massive jolt to their chances of quick recovery post the second wave. They were hopeful that Maalik and Cold Case will bring the audiences back to theaters, which are expected to reopen in mid-July as corona cases are going down regularly. However, there is Mohanlal's big budget, Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham, and Aaraattu, scheduled for release in theaters, but theaters need other big stars to step to help them out. ## Fahadh Faasil particularly could face the consequence for his continued interest in OTT platforms. Maalik is his fourth consecutive direct-to-digital release in 9 months, despite the stern warning from The Kerala Film Body, who had warned FaFa to refrain from releasing his movies directly on OTTs by overlooking theaters. It will be interesting to see if the Film Body takes action on him or he will be giving the benefit of doubt. Meanwhile, Faasil is playing the antagonist in Allu Arjun fronted Telugu movie, Pushpa, which will release in multiple languages including Malayalam. ## For the record, the Malayalam industry is the lowest-grossing industry as the total net collection Malayalam movies have generated so far in 2021, is approx Rs. 35 crores, which is far less as compared to Telugu and Tamil industries. However, the Kerala government is yet to grant permission for shootings in the state. ## Now, filmmaker Alphonse Puthren, who rose to fame with Malayalam romantic drama, Premam (2015), has questioned the government on why film shootings are still not allowed in the state while other film industries have resumed work. ## He took to social media and wrote, "Why is film shooting not allowed? If people who sell milk are allowed to work and people who sell food are allowed to work, why are film people not allowed to work? How do we eat food? How do we buy milk? How do we teach our children? How do we buy a pencil box for our children? How do we earn money?" ## Alphonse clarified that when it comes to film shootings, even close-up shots require a certain distance to be maintained between the actors involved and the technicians.## "Cinema shooting doesn't happen like in cinema theatres. Even if we have to shoot a close-up or a wide shot we have to stand two meters away or more. So what logic are you telling here? Please think and tell me a solution. Thank you. Alphonse Puthren", he added. ## On the work front, Alphonse's next Malayalam film is titled Paattu with Fahadh Faasil in the lead role. Paattu is his first film after Preman. Meanwhile, the filmmaker has also a script for superstar Rajinikanth. ## In a recent interaction with fans on Facebook, he had said that he has a script ready for superstar Rajinikanth and would like to join hands with him for the project. Kochi, June 9, 2021: Malayalam superstar Fahadh Faasil's upcoming political crime drama film, Malik is one of the most waited Malayalam films. The movie was scheduled for May 13 release on the occasion of Eid in theaters, however, the devastating second wave of the covid-19 pandemic forced the makers to postpone it once again. ## Fahadh Faasil's 'Malik' has been effectively postponed on multiple occasions. Now, as theaters are closed and there is no information when they will open, there are rumours that Malik is heading for direct-to-digital release. While there is no clarity yet on this, there is one thing is for sure that he might have to face conscience if his releases Malik directly on OTT platform. ## While Faasil's decision remains in question, the theaters owners will be hoping that the movie releases in cinemas as they have been badly affected due to the covid-19 pandemic.
