Chennai, October 30 - The Tamil film industry rose above its chest in 2023 and delivered back-to-back blockbusters. It all began with Thalapathy Vijay's "Varisu" and Ajith Kumar's "Thunivu" in January as both movies emerged as box office winners despite clashing against each other. ## The success of the films above was followed by the second chapter of "Ponniyin Selvan", though it couldn't repeat the magical performance of the "PS-1" it did well enough to emerge as a box office success. There were some more box office winners in the form of "Mark Antony", "Maamannan", "Maaveeran", "Vaathi/SIR", and "Viduthalai Part - 1", but it was "Jailer" and "Leo" that packed the knockout punch. ## Superstar Rajinikanth's action drama Jailer, directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, was released during the Independence Day weekend on August 10 and made the most of the holiday period. The movie got a largely positive reception and went on to become the second highest-grossing Tamil movie of all time, grossing over 600 crores worldwide. ## Director Lokesh Kanagaraj's latest LCU entrant Leo, starring Thalapathy Vijay, is not far behind "Jailer" despite getting a mixed reception. The action drama was released on October 19 and became the first Tamil movie to top 100 crores worldwide on opening day. Chennai, October 28 - Director Lokesh Kanagaraj is on cloud nine with the mega success of the action drama "Leo", starring Thalapathy Vijay. Despite mixed reception regarding the second half, the film is doing very well at the box office and crossed 500 crores gross mark worldwide in 10 days.## The filmmaker, during the trailer launch event of Karthi's "Japan" today, accepted the public opinion that there were some flaws in the second half of "Leo", and promised to come up with a stronger output in his next film in the Lokesh Cinematic Universe (LCU). ## As known to everyone, "Leo" is the third film in the LCU and the next in the series is Karthi's "Kaithi 2" which will commence by the end of this year. During the event, Lokesh informed the audience that he wrote "Leo" some five years back and didn't want to change the script much by adding extra elements and promised that "Kaithi 2" would be stronger than his previous films. ## The director also revealed that Thalapathy Vijay is happy with the success of "Leo", and also said that he saw the theatre response of the audience cheering for the movie. Yet, when they joined forces for the first time, the result was nothing short of a mega blockbuster. ## Produced by Sun Pictures, Jailer hit cinemas on August 10, 2023, during the long Independence Day weekend. Chennai, October 24 - Thalapathy Vijay teamed up with director Venkat Prabhu for the first time for his next, tentatively titled Thalapathy 68 and the shoot for the same has already commenced. The movie is believed to be a unique sci-fi actioner, produced by AGS Entertainment. ## While things have just started rolling out, T-Series has already grabbed the music rights of T68 in all languages. The makers haven't disclosed the amount but it is said that the audio rights of the film have been sold for a whopping 20+ crores to T-Series which is an all-time biggest deal for a Tamil title. ## T-Series has been a market leader in the music space and it is another ground-breaking deal for this Bhushan Kumar-led company. Among the major records, the film has become Thalapathy Vijay's highest-grossing film in Kerala state in just 3 days. ## The action drama film scored approximately 7 crores gross on its 3rd day, pushing total collection to approx. 24.85 crores in Kerala. "Leo" surpassed the lifetime total of "Bigil" which grossed 19+ crores to become Thalapathy's biggest grosser in the state. The movie dropped just around 45% on Friday for approx. 35 crores net after the huge opening day of approx. 65 crores net.## Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, "Leo" topped 100 crores net in just two days, becoming the fastest Tamil movie to reach the mark by beating Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar's "2.0" which scored approx. 98 crores net in the first two days. However, in terms of gross collection, "2.0" had a higher two-day collection with 126 crores than "Leo" which minted approx. 118 crores domestic gross collection. ## At the overseas box office, the Thalapathy Vijay-led movie grossed an estimated 90 crores in two days, pushing worldwide collection to approx. 208 crores gross.
