Thalapathy Vijay's 'Leo' Hits Record Pre-Release Theatrical and Non-Theatrical Business

Chennai, February 26 - The Tamil film industry witnessed one of the best years at the box office in 2022. It was the year that witnessed some of the top Indian grosser coming from Tamil cinema, in the form of "Vikram", "Ponniyin Selvan - 1", and "Beast", among others. ## After such a massive year, the Tamil industry is now looking to aim high in 2023 with some of the most-anticipated films at the Pan India level lined up for release. One of the films that are the hottest in the trade is Thalapathy Vijay's gangster drama Leo with director Lokesh Kanagaraj. ## "Leo" is arguably the most-anticipated Tamil film of the year. It marks Thalapathy Vijay's second collaboration with Lokesh Kanagaraj after the blockbuster "Master". Despite not much having been revealed yet about the film, there is already a huge demand for it in the trade. ## It was recently revealed that the makers have sold the non-theatrical rights of "Leo" at a record price. Now, according to Pinkvilla, the entire theatrical and non-theatrical rights of the movie have been closed at unheard prices. ## The total pre-release business including satellite, digital, music, and theatrical rights of the film is over 400 crores, which is the highest ever for a Tamil title. The worldwide theatrical rights have been locked at approx. 175 crores, including approx. 50 crores for overseas. ## Thalapathy Vijay is the only actor to have 5 films with over 60 crores share collection in Tamil Nadu state, and his upcoming movie has been valued at approx. 75 crores. The asking price for Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana are approx. 35 crore while the rest of India is pegged at a sum of 15 crores. ## The non-theatrical rights of "Leo" have been sold for approx. 240 crores. The digital rights are with Netflix which acquired for approx. 120 crores (Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Kannada). Sun TV has bought the satellite rights of T67 for approx. 70 crores, while Sony Music has been announced as the Music Partner and it paid approx. 18 crores for the same. The Hindi dubbed prices are said to be in the range of 30 crores. ## "Leo" is produced by Seven Screen Studio. It also stars Trisha Krishnan as the female lead along with Sanjay Dutt, Arjun Sarja, Priya Anand, and Gautham Menen, among others in key roles. Box Office: Dhanush's Vaathi/Sir Has An Excellent Opening Weekend Worldwide

Chennai, February 20 - Tamil star Dhanush is back in the form with his latest bilingual blockbuster film Vaathi/Sir. Directed by Venkry Atluri, the action drama film has completed its opening weekend with an excellent box office collection worldwide. ## The movie was released on February 17 and got positive reviews from critics and audiences. It opened to fantastic 11.4 crores gross, before jumping on Saturday for 13.7 crores gross while Sunday witnessed another jump for 14.20 crores gross in Tamil and Telugu languages. ## The domestic opening weekend of Vaathi/Sir saw 39.30 crores in both versions, becoming Dhanush's biggest opening weekend collection film. While the Tamil version was expected to perform well, the Telugu version surprised with the excellent collection.## In Telugu states (Andhra Pradesh and Telangana), SIR scored 16.40 crores gross in the first three days which is bigger than most of the recent Telugu films' lifetime collections. In Tamilnadu, Vaathi grossed 17.65 crores in the opening weekend. In Telugu states, the movie has already achieved the break-even target and heading toward a big blockbuster. ## Overseas, Vaathi/SIR racks in approx. 11 crores for worldwide opening weekend to over 50 crores gross, which is the highest for Dhanush. South Indian Pongal/Sankranthi Blockbusters Hit 700 Crores At The Worldwide Box Office

Chennai, January 22 - The year 2023 has opened with a bang for the Indian film industry, led by South Indian films as the gamble to release four big films around the same time on this Pongal/Sankranthi festival has paid off. ## Pongal/Sankranthi has always been a lucrative festival for South Indian films at the box office, and this year was no different with four biggies released and got succeeded. Thalapathy Vijay and Ajith Kumar released their biggies "Varisu" and "Thunivu", respectively. On the other hand, Chiranjeevi and Nandamuri Balakrishna brought their films "Waltair Veerarya" and "Veera Simha Reddy". ## All four aforementioned films were having over 400 crores on their shoulders as far as the theatrical share collection is concerned. The combined business of all four films has already crossed the break-even mark as the overall gross collection of them has rocked 700 crores at the global box office. It has a direct clash with "Thunivu", and despite that, the movie has managed to cross the 100 crores mark in Tamil Nadu state. ## Waltair Veerayya - The action drama film has become the first clean hit for Megastar Chiranjeevi since "Khaidi No. 150" (2017). It has so far grossed approx. 178 crores worldwide, including approx. 153 crores in India in just 9 days. It was valued at approx. 89 crores and has already managed to make approx. 17 crores profit. It will soon enter a 200 crores club worldwide. ## Thunivu - Another film that has managed to achieve the break-even target within two weeks. In just 11 days since its release, the heist action thriller film has grossed approx. 168 crores, including approx. 118 crores domestically. It was valued at around 85 crores and it has surpassed this mark and turned into a profitable venture. ## Veera Simha Reddy - The Nandamuri Balakrishna's action drama gets saved by the Sankranthi holidays. It will eventually achieve the break-even target but is unlikely to big a big profitable film for the involved parties. Despite all this, it has become the highest-grossing film for NBK. Chennai, January 15 - Thalapathy Vijay's family action drama Varisu is emerging as a favorite Tamil film this Pongal festival, not just in the original Tamil language but also in Telugu and Hindi languages. ## Directed by Vamshi Paidipally, "Varisu" grossed approx. 78 crores domestically in the first 4 days. The movie grossed an estimated 21+ crores on Sunday, including an estimated 13+ crores in the Tamil language, pushing the total domestic gross collection to around 100 crores in the 5-day opening weekend. ## The Telugu version of the film, "Varasudu" did well on the opening day with approx. 5.40 crores and scored another 5.50+ crores gross on its second day for approx. 11 crores gross in two days. Chennai, January 13 - The two Pongal releases, Thalapathy Vijay's Varisu and Ajith Kumar's Thunivu are having neck-to-neck competition at the box office with the former having a little advantage at the domestic box office after two days. ## Both films had a good hold on their second day despite dropping in the range of 50% each. The two days domestic gross collection for Thalapathy Vijay-starrer is approx. 45 crores while Ajith-fronted has grossed 42.50 crores.## "Varisu" witnessed another good hold on its 3rd day and scored an estimated 12 crores gross, dropping approx. 10%. The total domestic collection for the movie now stands at approx. 57 crores after 3 days with 2 big weekend days ahead of it. Early Estimates: Varisu And Thunivu Hold Strong On The Second Day

Chennai, January 12 - The two powerful forces of Tamil cinema, Thalapathy Vijay and Ajith Kumar collectively scored the day ever at the Tamil Nadu box office when their respective films, Varisu and Thunivu grossed 41+ crores on the opening day. ## The Ajith-starrer won the opening-day battle in the home state but it was "Varisu" that took the honors at the domestic box office a little over 31 crores against 28+ crores of "Thunivu". The word of mouth for both films is on the positive side and that helped both hold strong on the second day. ## As per the early estimates, "Varisu" grossed an estimated 18-20 crores on the second day, dropping around 40% which is lesser than the usual drop for a Tamil film. "Thunivu", on the other hand, has a drop in the similar range for an estimated 17-19 crores gross. ## The two days total domestic collection for "Varisu" is around 50 crores while "Thunivu" has minted approx. 45 crores gross (final second-day numbers may vary).## Both, "Varisu" and "Thunivu" are getting benefitted because of the Pongal holidays and this is expected to continue during throughout the opening weekend. Chennai, January 11 - The Pongal 2023 festival weekend kicks off on a blockbuster note, thanks to the two most anticipated Tamil tentpoles Thalapathy Vijay's Varisu and Ajith Kumar's Thunivu.## Telugu director Vamshi Paidipally directed "Varisu" while H. Vinoth helmed "Thunivu". Since both movies came on the same day, it was certain that no new box office record would be created but couldn't stop both films to bring combined joy to movie theaters and the makers. ## As per the early estimates, the combined opening day box office collection for "Varisu" and "Thunivu" is over 50 crores gross domestically. Theatrical Business Details Of Pongal/Sankranthi Releases

Chennai, January 10 - Four of the biggest stars of the Southern Indian film industry, Thalapathy Vijay, Ajith Kumar, Chiranjeevi, and Nandamuri Balakrishna, will be competing at the box office to attract audience eyeballs during one of the most lucrative Pongal/Sankranthi festival frames. ## Thalapathy Vijay's Varisu, scheduled for January 11 release, is easily the biggest film this Pongal festival as far as the movie business is concerned. It will be up against Ajith Kumar's Thunivu at the Tamil box office and both the movies are having neck-to-neck numbers in the advance booking with "Varisu" marginally ahead at the moment. ## Directed by Vamshi Paidipally and produced by Dil Raju, "Varisu" will need to perform strong legs at the box office as the break-even target for this family action drama film is on the higher side as compared to the other movies. The break-even target for the movie is approx. 155 crores share, which means, it will need to gross around 280 crores at the global box office. ## The break-even target for "Varisu" seems too little higher given the fact that it will have to share screens with "Thunivu" which is also due on January 11 release. It will, however, fancy chances, thanks to Thalapathy Vijay who has a mighty impressive pull at the box office.## On the other hand, "Thunivu's" break-even target is close to 88 crores share or approx. 165 crores gross worldwide.
