Shang-Chi Star Simu Liu Responds To Disney CEO For Calling The Release Of Superhero Film An 'Experiment'

Los Angeles, August 15, 2021: Simu Liu, the leading star of Marvel's upcoming superhero film, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, has called out the CEO of Disney Bob Chapek for calling the theatrical release of the film an "experiment" amid the testing times of the covid-19 pandemic. ## During a Walt Disney Company earnings call this week, Disney CEO Bob Chapek called the current climate for releasing movies in theaters a challenge. In addition, he said that Shang-Chi would be "an interesting experiment for us because it's got only a 45-day window for us". For Liu, who has been quite vocal on social media about a number of topics, the comment from Disney doesn't sit quite right. ## Liu wrote, "We are not an experiment. We are the underdog; the underestimated. We are the ceiling-breakers. We are the celebration of culture and joy that will persevere after an embattled year. We are the surprise. I'm fired the f**k up to make history on September 3rd; JOIN US". ## We are not an experiment. We are the underdog; the underestimated. We are the ceiling-breakers. A lot of people want to see Shang-Chi succeed because of what it will mean for the larger cinematic landscape. But, for Simu Liu, this is also a story that needs to be told as it relates to representation as well. ## Shang Chi is scheduled to debut in theaters on September 3 for an exclusive 45-days of the theatrical window. The movie is projected to score between $35M - $55M in the opening domestic weekend. The makers are hoping to beat the odds and be the first step on the road back to some bigger box office totals during the pandemic. ## Stay tuned...

Oscar Winner Emma Stone Cracked Deal With Disney To Star In 'Cruella' Sequel

Los Angeles, August 14, 2021: Amid the criticism of its theatrical - Disney+ Premier model, Disney has been able to crack a deal with Oscar winner, Emma Stone to return to star in the sequel to crime comedy film "Cruella", based on the character Cruella de Vil from Dodie Smith's 1956 novel The Hundred and One Dalmatians. ## Due to the covid-19 pandemic, Disney opted for a two-way release on theaters and on Disney+ PVOD tier for some of its releases including "Cruella", which debuted on May 26 this year. The movie earned more than $222 million in worldwide ticket sales, making it a fruitful outing for Disney. Stone joins returning director Craig Gillespie and returning writer Tony McNamara in the sequel ## Earlier, Black Widow star Scarlett Johansson filed a lawsuit against Disney over its hybrid release model, alleging that it has breached her contract which reportadly promised an exclusive theatrical release of her films. After Johansson's lawsuit, there were speculations that Emma Stone might also take the same route over Cruella's release, however, that hasn't happened yet. ## Dwayne Johnson, however, supported Disney for its release model during the pandemic for his action-adventure film, Jungle Cruise, which debuted on July 30. The film has so far grossed $73.1M domestic, $201M+ worldwide, and $50M in estimated Disney+ Premier global PVOD monies, good for a current estimated global haul of $251M+. ## Meanwhile, Cruella 2 is still in the pre-production stage, and it's not certain yet whether the movie will be an outright theatrical release or like its predecessor released simultaneously in homes. Disney, however, recently confirmed that it will release its upcoming movies, including Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, exclusively in theaters for a 45-days window. ## Stay tuned...

Hugh Jackman Shoots Down Return As Wolverine In Marvel Cinematic Univers

Los Angeles, August 11, 2021: Hugh Jackman, the fan-favorite one of the X-Men, Wolverine, has done his part for the MCU charactor and shoot down any possibility of returning to the franchise. The actor, who debuted in 2000's X-Men adaptation in the fierce role of Logan aka Wolverine, quickly became a fan favorite and went on to star in both sequels X2 and X-Men: The Last Stand. ## The character was loved by the audiences to an extent that he went on to appear in three Wolverine solo films, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, The Wolverine, and X-Men: Days of Future Past before getting to star in his final solo film, Logan. However, Jackman's character had a tragic end, signaling the end of an era.## With Marvel Studios going to explore the multiverse in its phase 4 movies, there were speculations that Wolverine could appear in the MCU. However, it seems that there is nothing left for Wolverine in the franchise. In an interview with SR promoting his upcoming film Reminiscence, Jackman was asked about whether or not he would return to the role of Wolverine in the MCU. ## Expressing his gratitude towards MCU and his relationship with Marvel chief Kevin Feige, Jackman said that he is grateful for the role of Wolverine and calls it "the role of a lifetime". But said that the role of a much loved MCU charactor is in the past and that chapter is seemingly closed. ## "It's in my past, man. Don't tell anyone, alright? Let me just say one more thing. Because as I said that, there’s not a day that goes by where I'm not unbelievably grateful for having been part of that MCU Universe. Particularly to be there at the beginning of it, and to watch it. To see Kevin Feige going from being an assistant to a producer and a mate of mine, to where he is today. And that was a role of a lifetime. So, I don't ever want people to feel that when I say I'm done, it's a glib thing. It was one of the great chapters of my life", Jackman said (via Screenrant). ## Marvel is likely to introduce the X-Men and mutants in the upcoming phase and without Jackman's presence, it would be slightly incomplete. However, with the multiverse to explore, one never knows if the actor is roped in for a cameo or any other character. ## Stay tuned...

Warner Bros. & DC's 'The Suicide Squad' Underperformed Amid Delta Variant Concerns And Hybrid Release On HBO Max

Los Angeles, August 9, 2021: Warner Bros. R-rated comic book adaptation, The Suicide Squad, has had a disappointing debut at the domestic box office. The James Gunn directorial collects only $26.5 million from 4,002 North American theatres, $3.5 million short from Warner Bros. prediction of $30 million domestic debut. ## There are many factors that went against the film's strong opening, including the growing concerns of the delta variant of the covid-19, the Warner Bros. film's hybrid release on HBO Max at no extra cost to subscribers, and its R-rating. The makers cost $185 million on film's making, and its low performance will surely make Warner Bros. rethink its simultaneous release strategy. ## At the international box office, 'The Suicide Squad ' added another $45.7 million from 70 overseas territories, bringing its global tally to $72.2 million. The standalone sequel to Suicide Squad (2016), opened with largely positive reviews from critics and audiences but it fell way short to reprise the success of the original movie. ## The original Suicide Squad had a massive $133.7 million opening weekend at the North American box office. Despite those eye-popping numbers, critics and audiences were left unimpressed by the film, though it ended up grossing $746 million worldwide. Of course, that film didn`t open during a deadly pandemic and wasn`t offered simultaneously on HBO Max. ## While it's still unclear how many HBO Max customers watched the film at home—and how many more were enticed to sign up for the streaming service - it is clear that the film's $185 million production budget is going to be tough to turn into the sort of huge moneymaker that comic-book movies were guaranteed to be prior to the pandemic. ## The Suicide Squad stars an ensemble cast including Margot Robbie, Idris Elba, John Cena, Joel Kinnaman, Sylvester Stallone, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, and Peter Capaldi. In the film, a task force of convicts are sent to destroy evidence of the giant alien Starro.## Stay tuned...

Disney Responds To Scarlett Johansson Over Alleged Breach Of Contract

Los Angeles, July 30, 2021: A few hours after Black Widow star Scarlett Johansson filed a lawsuit against Walt Disney Co., the company has hit back at the actress, calling the lawsuit "sad and distressing". ## On Thursday (July 29), Scarlett Johansson suid Disney at the Los Angeles Superior Court, alleging that her contract was breached when the Walt Disney Co. released the film on its Disney+ streaming service at the same time as its theatrical debut. The actress's agreement with Disney's Marvel Entertainment/Marvel Studios guaranteed an exclusive theatrical release of her films, in which her salary was mostly based on the film's box-office performance.## Disney countered Johansson's lawsuit in a rather fiery statement, stating, "There is no merit whatsoever to this filing. The lawsuit is especially sad and distressing in its callous disregard for the horrific and prolonged global effects of the COVID-19 pandemic", Disney said. ## The company went on to state that the actress has already received $20 million for her work and argued that "the release of 'Black Widow' on Disney+ with Premier Access has significantly enhanced her ability to earn additional compensation on top of the $20M she has received to date". ## Black Widow was made available on Disney's streaming service for a $30 rental fee at the same time it debuted in theaters on July 9. "Black Widow" set a pandemic-era box office record with $80 million in North America. It earned an additional $78 million overseas and $60 million on Disney Plus. However, the movie witnessed a historical decline of 67% in the second weekend at the box office. ## Earlier, the US theater association also slammed Disney for making the film available at home. The association felt that due to Disney's two-way release, the theatrical business was badly affected. Currently, Black Widow stands at a gross of $319 million worldwide. ## Stay tuned...

Black Widow: Scarlett Johansson Files A Lawsuit Against Walt Disney Co. Over Her Film's Digital Release

Los Angeles, July 29, 2021: Walt Disney Co. lends in hot water over Black Widow's Disney+ release. Scarlett Johansson, star of Marvel Studios' latest release Black Widow film, filed a lawsuit against Walt Disney Co. on Thursday (July 29) at the Los Angeles Superior Court, as reported by The Direct. ## Johansson reportadly alleged that her contract was breached when the Walt Disney Co. released the film on its Disney+ streaming service at the same time as its theatrical debut. ## The actress's agreement with Disney's Marvel Entertainment/Marvel Studios guaranteed an exclusive theatrical release of her films, in which her salary was mostly based on the film's box-office performance. ## According to the suit's allegations, "Disney intentionally induced Marvel's breach of agreement" to prevent Scarlett Johansson "from realizing the full benefit of her bargain with Marvel". There is no official comment from the company yet regarding the lawsuit filed against it. ## Black Widow was released on July 9 simultaneously on Disney+ premiere access at the same time it debuted in theaters. It is to be noted that the US theater association also slammed Disney for making the film available at home. The cinema chains' reaction came after the movie dropped by 67% in the second weekend after taking the record-breaking opening of the pandemic era. ## Stay tuned...

Warner Bros. Announces The Release Dates Of The Suicide Squad, The Conjuring 3, And Mortal Kombat In India

Mumbai, July 27, 2021: As theaters have reopened in most of the states of India, Hollywood production house, Warner Bros. has announced the release dates of its three much-awaited films - The Suicide Squad, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, and Mortal Kombat, in India. ## "Mortal Combat", and "The Conjuring 3" have already been released in international markets but were delayed in India due to the covid-19 pandemic. These two films will now release on July 30 and August 13 respectively in multiple Indian languages. "The Suicide Squad", however, will release in India on the same date as its international release on August 5. ## Martial arts fantasy film, Mortal Combat, had previously released in India in April in languages other than Hindi. The Suicide Squad and The Conjuring are popular franchises in India and are sure to attract audiences to the theatres on their names. ## "It is heartening to know that Warner Bros Pictures have announced the release dates of Mortal Kombat, The Suicide Squad 2, and The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It. Many states have given permission for cinemas to re-open and the release of these movies in three consecutive weeks in multi-languages and multi-formats would surely give a boost to the industry by inducing moviegoers back to the big screen to enjoy these amazing films", Kamal Gianchandani, CEO, PVR Pictures said, as per News18. ## Meanwhile, Universal Pictures' "Fast & Furious 9", which was announced for August 5 release in India, has now been postponed. Considering the franchise's popularity in India, the production house has decided to release the film once key markets like Maharashtra open up. The US Theater Association Slams Disney For Simulatanous Digital Release Of Marvel's Tentpole Movie - Black Widow

The US Theater Association Slams Disney For Simulatanous Digital Release Of Marvel's Tentpole Movie - Black Widow

Los Angeles, July 19, 2021: The US cinema association, the National Association of Theater Owners (NATO), has slammed Walt Disney Co. for simultaneous Disney+ and theatrical release of Marvel Studios' Black Widow, saying the decision has undercut the tentpole's box office potential and promoted piracy. ## After taking a record pandemic era opening, the Scarlett Johansson led superhero movie falls flat in the second weekend and recorded the decline of 67 percent, one of the biggest drops ever for a Marvel title, and the worst among the Marvel films released by Disney. The record decline didn't go well with theaters owners who come out hard on Disney for their two-way release decision. ## "Despite assertions that this pandemic-era improvised release strategy was a success for Disney and the simultaneous release model, it demonstrates that an exclusive theatrical release means more revenue for all stakeholders in every cycle of the movie's life", NATO said in a statement (via THR). ## In the second weekend (16-18 July), Black Widow recorded $26.3 million domestic gross and fell to no. 2, behind Warner Bros.' Space Jam: A New Legacy, which topped the chart with a better-than-expected domestic debut of $31.7. Space Jam, however, is also the simultaneous theaters and HBO Max release, coming in Warner Bros.' release plan of its 2021 movies. ## NATO thinks the standalone superhero offering from Marvel should have debuted in the $92 million to $100 million range domestically. The trade organization points to cannibalization from Disney+ and piracy as the prime culprits for Black Widow's performance.## "One can assume the family-oriented Disney+ household is larger. How much? How much password sharing is there among Disney+ subscribers? Combined with the lost theatrical revenue and forgone traditional PVOD revenue, the answer to these questions will show that simultaneous release costs Disney money in revenue per viewer over the life of the film", NATO says.## "Piracy no doubt further affected Black Widow's performance and will affect its future performance in international markets where it has yet to open", the release continued. "Pristine digital copies became available within minutes of release on Disney+. Black Widow was the most torrented movie for the week ending July 12. "It is also available on myriad illegal streaming sites all over the Internet". ## Meanwhile, Disney is all set to bring Black Widow directly on its streaming platform in India, skipping theatrical debut. However, Both Disney and WarnerMedia have indicated they will return to a traditional theatrical release when the pandemic subsidies, both in the U.S. and overseas.## Stay tuned...
