Record-Breaker 'Shang-Chi' Racing Towards $100 Million Domestic Gross
Los Angeles, September 7, 2021: Marvel Studios' latest superhero movie, "Shang-Chi And The Legend of the Ten Rings" box office outcome may have changed Disney's plans to release future MCU movies during the covid-19 pandemic. So far, Disney has taken a simultaneous duel route (except Shang-Chi) for its movies (during this pandemic) in theaters and on Disney Plus. ## The Simu Liu fronted "Shang-Chi" smashed domestic box office records and performed way better than it was anticipated. The first Asian Marvel superhero, "Shang-Chi" has posted the second-biggest three-day debut of the pandemic year so far with approx $75 million at the domestic (North America) box office.## The Destin Daniel Cretton directorial is racing towards $100 million domestic gross sooner than expected after it crashed the record for Labor Day openings with a four-day haul (Fri-Mon) of $94.7 million. In other words, "Shang-Chi" earned at least $25 - $30 million more than it was predicted in the opening weekend. It is the biggest 4-day haul for any Hollywood movie during the pandemic at the domestic box office. The previous best was "Black Widow", which earned $87.5M over the first 4 days.## Globally, "Shang-Chi" has grossed an estimated $130 million after opening up in key markets such as France, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom, Japan, Korea, Brazil, Mexico, and India. Marvel is the biggest overseas franchise in India, and as expected, "Shang-Chi" topped the Indian box office for the opening weekend with Rs. 12.63 crore gross. ## "Shang-Chi" fell just short of fellow Marvel pic "Black Widow", which holds the record of the biggest 3-day opening at the domestic box office during the pandemic. This Scarlett Johansson starrer earned $80.3 million in the first weekend and is currently the highest grosser Hollywood pic at the North America box office. ## "Shang-Chi" centers on a former assassin who must contend with the legacy of his evil father and the crime syndicate he operates. It’s the first Marvel movie to have an Asian superhero as its protagonist. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the movie stars Simu Liu in title role along with Awkwafina, Michelle Yeoh, Tony Leung and Meng'er Zhang. ## The thundering box office response for "Shang-Chi" made Sony Pictures push up the release date of Tom Hardy starrer "Venom: Let There Be Carnage". It was scheduled to debut on October 15 but now, it will hit screens two weeks earlier on October 1 in the USA. October is going to be a treat for Hollywood fans as Daniel Craig's final outing as James Bond, "No Time To Die" is also slated for October 8 worldwide release in theaters. ## Stay tuned...
