Los Angeles, September 17, 2021: Marvel is undoubtedly the most loved superhero franchise in the world and has made its own legacy with The Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, despite getting so much popularity and loved by its fans around the film, there are still those who have criticized the superhero franchise over the years.
Of late, Marvel Studios has been expanding the superhero genre by blending it with other elements that would make it unique with feature films and shows, but it looks like that despite all the efforts, the Studio will still be criticized for not making so-called real cinema.
The latest in the list to criticize Marvel movies is the acclaimed director Denis Villeneuve, who is currently awaiting the release of the epic sci-fi film "Dune". In response to Spanish daily El Mundo's question citing Martin Scorsese's comments about the idea that superhero films are not cinema, Villeneuve agreed to the former's comments, calling MCU nothing but "cut and paste".
"Perhaps the problem is that we are in front of too many Marvel movies that are nothing more than a 'cut and paste' of others. Perhaps these types of movies have turned us into zombies a bit… But big and expensive movies of great value there are many today. I don't feel capable of being pessimistic at all".
Earlier, in October 2019, "Taxi Driver" and "The Wolf of Wall Street" director Martin Scorsese, had blasted Marvel by saying that Marvel movies are not cinema and even compared them with "theme parks".
"I don't see them. I tried, you know? But that's not cinema. Honestly, the closest I can think of them, as well made as they are, with actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is theme parks. It isn’t the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being", he told Empire according to Indian Express.
