'Minions: Rise of Gru' Smashes Box Office Records In North America

Los Angeles, July 3 - Universal/Illumination's Minions: Rise of Gru is putting up a big show at the box office, and has surprised the Hollywood trade experts. ## The sequel to the spin-off prequel Minions (2015) and the fifth entry overall in the Despicable Me franchise "Minions: Rise of Gru" scored a gigantic $108.5 million in the first three days as the long July 4th holiday weekend heads for a massive $128 million at the North American box office, as per The Hollywood Reporter. ## The $128 million July 4th weekend of Minions is way ahead of Industry's projection which was around $80 million. While the 4-days total of the film is by far the biggest for an animated movie during the covid-19 pandemic, it is also one of the top starts ever at the domestic box office for an animated Hollywood title. ## At the international box office, "Minions: Rise of Gru" scored a huge $94 million through Sunday, pushing the global cume to $202 million, including a $108 million domestic opening weekend. ## The Hollywood industry is seeing Minions' box office performance differently. The movie has confirmed that parents and younger kids are ready to return to the multiplex in droves, overcoming their covid fear which was holding them back before. Mumbai, July 3 - Director Raj Mehta's Jugjugg Jeeyo has crossed the 100 crores mark at the worldwide box office, becoming only the fourth Bollywood movie of 2022 to do so. ## The family comedy-drama film is having an unlike other Bollywood films' run at the box office. It is, after the opening weekend, having a decent but consistent run at the domestic box office, scoring 61.44 crores net through the second Saturday (9 days). ## "Jug Jugg Jeeyo" is having a good run internationally as compared to the other movies. North America is leading its overseas charge with approx. $1.5 million, followed by Australia with $576K, and the UK with $286K. Bengaluru, July 3 - Superstar Yash-fronted KGF has been one of the most successful franchises in India. The two films in the franchise have grossed approx. 1500 crores at the worldwide box office, this includes a massive 1210 crores of recently released "KGF Chapter 2". ## "KGF Chapter 1", which was released in 2018, was the highest-grossing Kannada film with approx. 238 crores worldwide gross before KGF 2 shattered all the records. Now, it has been revealed that KGF Chapter 1 is the most-watched film worldwide on YouTube. ## The Bhojpuri version of KGF was uploaded on Goldmines' YouTube channel a year ago. The movie has now a whopping 615 million views on the video-sharing platform, which is reportedly the highest ever for any film in the world (since its release on YouTube). It also has nearly 6 million likes which is again, the highest ever. ## Directed by Prashanth Neel, and produced by Hombale Films, KGF film focuses on Rocky, a high-ranking assassin in Mumbai, who was born in poverty. After being offered total control of Mumbai by his employer's boss, he disguises himself as a slave laborer in the Narachi limestone mine (Kolar Gold Fields), aiming to assassinate Garuda, the future heir of KGF.## Yash stars as Rocky in the film alongside Ramachandra Raju as Garuda, Srinidhi Shetty, Vasishta N. "RRR" has been compared to the best of Marvel movies for its high cinematic value. However, despite becoming a box office monster and being critically hailed, "RRR", is not the best-rated Indian movie on the online social networking service Letterboxd. ## Letterboxd has released the list of top 25 best-rated films worldwide on its platform and it revealed "RRR" as the second best-rated Indian title of 2022 so far. Tamil movie "Kadaisi Vivasayi" is the highest-rated Indian film on Letterboxd. Directed by M. Manikandan, "Kadaisi Vivasayi" is about Maayandi, the only farmer in a village that has abandoned farming, who is charged with a petty case that leads to his imprisonment. It also stars Vijay Sethupathi and Yogi Babu. ## "Kadaisi Vivasayi" is also the second best-rated film worldwide on the Letterboxd, behind only "Everything Everywhere All at Once", which is also the highest-grossing film for A24 studio at the worldwide box office with $91 million. The movie is about an aging Chinese immigrant who is swept up in an insane adventure, where she alone can save what's important to her by connecting with the lives she could have led in other universes. ## "RRR" is the sixth best-rated film worldwide on the platform, behind Tom Cruise's "Top Gun Maverick" but ahead of Warner Bros. "The Batman". Dhanush Collaborates With Director Arun Matheswaran For A Pan India Movie, Captain Miller

Chennai, July 2 - Actor Dhanush has collaborated with director Arun Matheswaran ("Saani Kaayidham", "Rocky") for a Pan India movie, Captain Miller. The period action-adventure movie will be produced by Sendhil Thyagarajan and Arjun Thyagarajan under the banner of Sathya Jyothi Films. ## "Captain Miller" will be set in the Madras Presidency of the 1930s and 40s. Director Arun Matheswaran told the Times of India that he had written this film way back in 2018 and had also narrated it to Dhanush, however, it couldn't take place at that time. Later in 2019, the project began to take shape again, says Arun. ## Arun's "Rocky" and "Saani Kaayidham" were intense and dark which catered the adult audiences. The director has confirmed that the upcoming movie will be different, intended for a mainstream audience. "This one will be a UA film as there is going to be a lot of action. In fact, the second half will have war sequences", Arun added. ## Dhanush will be sporting three different looks in the movie and the character will also have two more names, confirmed by the director himself. "The story unfolds over 15 years of this character's life, so I knew that he'd capture the different timelines of a person's life very well. There's action and a range of emotions, and I felt that he'd pull it off the best", Matheswaran said about roping Dhanush in the movie. ## The makers have roped in celebrated artists for the movie. Shreyas Krishna ("Rocky", "Jagame Thandhiram") will be handling the cinematography while Nagooran is the editor. "Sarpatta Parambarai" fame Tha Ramalingam has been roped in as the art director while Poornima Ramaswamy, who won the National Award for her work in "Paradesi", is the costume designer of the film. GV Prakash Kumar will be composing the music. ## The movie will be shot in real locations across the country as the shooting will commence soon. The distributors are ready to acquire the Hindi rights of the movie in mega sum but it looks like the producers are wanting more. ## Mythri Movie Makers teamed up with Manish Shah of Goldmines Films to distribute "Pushpa - The Rise" in the Hindi belt, in which it scored a massive approx. 110 crores net, and that too when the covid-19 cases were going up. Knowing the fact that "Pushpa 2" is a hot property in Hindi, Mythri is reportedly in talks with several studios and distributors for the release of the film. ## That is not all, according to reports, the producers of the film are looking to apply the formula of "Baahubali" and "KGF" in Hindi to get the best return. BB and KGF films were released in Hindi on commision basis through Hindi distributors as the producers were confident of the box office prospects of their films. There is a high possibility that Mythri can take a similar route by getting a distributor on board commission basis for the Hindi release. ## Interestingly, the production of the movie is yet to begin and the makers are already getting huge offers from Hindi distributors. Mumbai, July 2 - Netflix's global hit series Stranger Things 4 has set a new weekly streaming record in the USA, according to Nielsen Streaming Content Ratings. Season 4 of this science fiction horror drama series has already become the most-watched English series on Netflix with over 930 million viewing hours. ## According to Nielsen, "Stranger Things" scored 7.2 billion viewing minutes for the week of May 30-June 5, which is the highest weekly total for any streaming title since the advent of weekly rankings almost two years ago. ## Nielsen counts all episodes of a series in totaling its streaming rankings, but it is certain that the majority of the 7.2 billion minutes of "Stranger Things" came from the seven episodes of season four released on May 27. ## "Stranger Things" series also has the biggest two-week tally for any streaming show with 12.34 billion viewing minutes. It was watched for 5.14 billion (including more than 75% from S4) minutes in the week of May 23 - May 29. It is also the only series with over 7+ billion viewing minutes in a single week. ## Nielsen's streaming ratings cover viewing on TV sets only and don't include minutes watched on computers or mobile devices. Mumbai, July 1 - Director Anees Bazmee is on cloud nine, thanks to the blockbuster success of his horror-comedy "Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2". The film starring Kartik Aaryan, Kiara Advani, and Tabu has made over 260 crores worldwide and is one of the biggest Indian blockbusters of 2022. ## According to the latest report, Anees Bazmee will be joining hands with Varun Dhawan for a comedy entertainer. Varun has been a part of some of the hit comedies and romantic comedies like Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania, Badrinath Ki Dulhania, Judwaa 2, and Coolie No. 1, among others. It is said that Varun and Anees have been in talks for a while now for their maiden collaboration. ## Anees will next be directing the long-awaited sequel to "No Entry" with the original male cast reprising their roles. Once he is done with "No Entry 2", the director will reportedly start work on Varun's film. According to Pinkvilla, "They recently met and discussed the idea of teaming up on a comic caper.
