BCCI should think of holding IPL 2020 in Sri Lanka in September, says Sunil Gavaskar

Legendary Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar said that the BCCI should consider holding the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 in Sri Lanka in September as he thinks that BCCI's plan of organizing the tournament in October looking far from reality after the Australia government has formally announced that 25 percent crowd can turn up for sporting events that have opened the door for the T20 World Cup that is scheduled to play in Australia in October. ## "After the announcement by the Australian government, there seems to be a possibility of conducting a World T20 in October. Maybe the teams will have to reach three weeks earlier, have seven days of practice games and also 14-day quarantine," Gavaskar told Sports Tak of Aaj Tak.## "If ICC believes that World T20 can happen, then having IPL looks difficult because it could only be held if World T20 is postponed but after the announcement (by Australia PM Scott Morrison), IPL in October looks difficult," he added.## While the T20 World Cup is looking more imminent than the IPL in October, Sunny G believes that holding IPL in Sri Lanka in September makes more sense as it can't be held in India around that time because of the monsoon.## "September you can't have IPL in India due to monsoon. But maybe in Sri Lanka from early September with teams playing each other once instead of a double header. Maybe you can think of that," Gavaskar said. ## The 70-year old also thinks that without the crowd, cricket will be a different experience as fans lift players' game. "Fans lift your game. The atmosphere is very different when they are present. Obviously players will lose out on that. Also, they will be wary of a team huddle, also may be a fist bump after a good shot".## Stay tuned...

Me and Shikhar Dhawan know each other quite well and that helps a lot on the field: Rohit Sharma

Team India's vice-captain in the limited-overs cricket, Rohit Sharma, and his opening partner Shikhar Dhawan share a great camaraderie with each other both on the off the field. Both the star players have been involved in many great partnerships over the years in the white-ball cricket. ## Since coming in the light as an opening pair during India's victorious 2013 Champions Trophy campaign, both Rohit and Dhawan have played memorable knocks together and become one of the finest opening pairs in the history of Indian cricket. ## Opening up about his relationship with Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma said while speaking with Mayank Agarwal and Dhawan on the series 'Open Nets with Mayank' hosted by bcci.tv.## "More than anything on the field, we share a great relationship off the field. Knowing each other so well, understanding each other's comforts and discomforts, that is very important. We shared rooms together when we went on India-A tours. So we have got a lot of history together. As a person, we both know each other quite well and that helps a lot on the field".## Shikhar Dhawan too admitted the same and hoped they continue to play for India in the years to come. "We clicked on the field from day one and especially after we started opening for India in the 2013 Champions Trophy. However, we shared a good friendship even before that, right from the U-19 days".## "So that comfort reflected during our partnerships on the field. It has been a beautiful journey with him. I have enjoyed it thoroughly and hopefully, we can carry it for another few years," Dhawan added.## Rohit Sharma revealed a funny incident with Shikhar Dhawan about the later's singing during a match against Bangladesh in 2015 where Shikhar Dhawan started singing loudly in the middle of the field which left the bowler and batsman amused. ## "We were playing in Bangladesh in 2015 as I was standing in the first slip and Shikhar was in third slip. Suddenly he started singing very loudly. The bowler was already in his run-up and the batsman, Tamim Iqbal, was left amazed. He didn't understand where the noise was coming from".## When Jatt ji and Hitman are in conversation, expect nothing less than entertainment 😅😅😅Episode 2 on Open nets with Mayank, coming up soon on https://t.co/uKFHYdKZLG pic.twitter.com/YSUuA2UmkF— BCCI (@BCCI) June 5, 2020 ## "It might not sound as funny right now but when it happened on the field we couldn't control our laughter, it was really funny," Rohit added.## Stay tuned...

Virat Kohli and Ravi Shastri have backed me a lot: Hardik Pandya

Team India all-rounder Hardik Pandya is arguably one of the most talented and flamboyant players in India at the moment. His ability to turn the game in the matter of just a few balls makes him stand apart from the others. ## However, Hardik's international career hasn't had a great start. He used to concede a lot of runs which had often lend him and the team in trouble. He revealed that during the Australia tour in 2016 in which he made his international debut with T20I in Adelaide, he went on to concede 26 runs off 8 balls and that left him fearing his career. ## "I conceded 26 runs from my first 8 balls and frankly thought my career was over. When I was hit for a huge six, almost 105-110m, I thought I was done. I felt it couldn't get worse than this and thankfully I managed to snare a couple of wickets," he said, speaking to Harsha Bhogle on Cricbuzz in Conversation.## Hardik Pandya who made his international debut under the captaincy of MS Dhoni has played most of his cricket under the leadership of Virat Kohli. Reflecting the beauty of the current Indian team, Hardik said that the current Indian captain and coach have backed him a lot during the tough times.## "I think he (MS Dhoni) wanted me to learn from my own experiences. Virat and Ravi Bhai (Shastri), they have given me that freedom, not just to me, but for everyone in the team. That's the beauty of this current Indian team, we have all made mistakes, but we are also learning at a very rapid pace. Those two have backed me a lot."## While cricket has given Hardik so much to appreciate, he has also had his fair share of criticism because of his off-field behavior. One such incident happened when he along with KL Rahul appeared on the Koffee with Karan show - that saw him being suspended along with Rahul for a few matches. The talented all-rounder has now opened up on the learnings from the incident.## “When that happened, I said to myself let's just accept it and try to correct the mistake. If I would've not accepted that mistake, that part would have still been in me. That phase does not bother me anymore because my family has accepted it,” he said.## Hardik, calling himself a family guy, said that his family is his backbone and without them, his existence holds no importance. He also revealed that after the Koffee with Karan controversy, his family got abused which hurt him the most. ## “I'm a family guy. Without family, I am no one. My family is my backbone. The Hardik Pandya you're seeing right now is because of the people behind the scenes, looking after me. They make sure that I am mentally stable and I stay happy".## “My family got abused. My father gave an interview post the incident and people made a mockery of it. What hurt me the most was my action caused my family problems, and that's not acceptable,” Hardik said.## Stay tuned...

Bowlers need an alternative to maintain the ball: Jasprit Bumrah

The coronavirus pandemic has not only changed the way of living but also it has forced to make some necessary changes in sports too. Recently, the International Cricket Council (ICC) Cricket Committee has prohibited the use of saliva to shine the ball in a bid to contain the spread of coronavirus when matches resume after the COVID-19 break. ## Team India pacer Jasprit Bumrah, however, raised concern over the ban on saliva and wants the alternative to maintaining the shine of the ball as he thinks that modern-day cricket has become more of a batsman-friendly game. So it will be difficult for the bowlers if there is no alternative option for shining the ball. However, the 26-year old does not have a problem with restrained celebrations as he thinks that he is not the high-five person.## "I was not much of a hugger anyway! And not a high-five person as well, so that doesn't trouble me a lot," Bumrah said on the ICC's video series, Inside Out Interviews with former West Indies pacer Ian Bishop and former South African captain Shaun Pollock. ## "The only thing that interests me is the saliva bit. I don't know what guidelines we'll have to follow when we come back, but I feel there should be an alternative. If the ball is not well maintained, it's difficult for the bowlers".## "The grounds are getting shorter and shorter, the wickets are becoming flatter and flatter. So we need something, some alternative for the bowlers to maintain the ball so that it can do something - maybe reverse at the end or conventional swing. In Test match cricket, yes (conditions are more bowler-friendly). That is why it's my favorite format because we have something over there. But in one-day cricket, there are two new balls, so it hardly reverses at the end. We played in New Zealand, the ground (boundary) was 50 meters. So even if you are not looking to hit a six, it will go for six. In Test matches I have no problem, I'm very happy with the way things are going."## The pacer also said that he prefers to bowl with Duke balls as it assists more swing and seam as compared to SG balls and Kookaburra balls.## "I love bowling with Dukes. It seems, it swings, so basically when you have a little bit of help, it does help as it is difficult to be a fast bowler with grounds getting shorter and wickets getting flatter".## "So if the ball does something, it becomes even competition. So you feel you are in the game. With no help, you only have few things to play with. So I enjoy bowling most with Dukes ball." Bishop asked Bumrah about how he developed the outswinger, which becomes an inswinger for the left-handers and the India international called it a gradual process," Bumrah said.## Bumrah also talked about his short run-up and said that many people advised him to increase it to generate more pace but he felt that pace never increased with the length of his run-up. ## "Playing in the backyard. My run-up is because of that as we didn't have so much of space, so this (8 step run-up) is the longest that you could have had, maybe this could have been the case. I have tried longer run-up and nothing changes, speed is still the same so why to run so much."## "Basically, I have never been coached a lot. No professional coaching or camps. Till date, everything is self-taught, everything, through TV, videos. There is no proper reason for action. I have never really listened to people who told that action needs to be changed, kept on developing on strengths if I could have self-belief," he said.## Stay tuned...

Virat Kohli credits MS Dhoni for becoming the captain of team India

Team India captain Virat Kohli has credited Mahendra Singh Dhoni in becoming the captain of the team by playing an important role. During a live chat session on Instagram with his teammate Ravichandran Ashwin, Kohli said that MS Dhoni had a lot of confidence in him that he can do it after him. ## Kohli took over as the full-time Test captain when Dhoni retired from the longest format midway through India's tour of Australia in 2014-15 and later became captain across formats when Dhoni quit his limited-overs post in early 2017.## "I was always inclined towards taking responsibility. After that it was all about just wanting to play, wanting to be in the XI regularly. I didn't play all the games, but I wanted to be discussed, that 'whether this guy is good enough to play or not.' That is a transition that slowly happens," Kohli said.## The Indian captain also revealed that because of his interest in the game, he used to discuss a lot of things with MS Dhoni when he was not captain. Because Dhoni had observed him closely, it helped him become the captain of the side. ## "Then with your interest in the game, you start talking to the captain regularly. I was always in MS's ear, standing next to him, saying, 'We can do this, we can do that.' He would deny a lot of things but he would discuss a lot of things as well. I think he got a lot of confidence that I can do this after him".## "A large portion of me becoming captain was also to do with him observing me for a long period of time. It can't just happen that he goes and the selectors say, 'Okay you become captain.' Obviously the guy who is there takes responsibility and says, 'Okay I think this is the next guy. I will tell you how it is going.' And then slowly that transition is formed. He played a big role in that, and that trust you have to build over six-seven years. It doesn't happen overnight, it's a process," Kohli added.## A lot of credit of team India's success in recent times goes to Virat Kohli who has transformed the team. One of the biggest wins of team India under Kohli when India created history by winning the test series against Australia in Australia for the first time which came 4 years later of him becoming the test captain. ## Stay tuned...

BCCI nominates Rohit Sharma for the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award 2020

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has nominated Rohit Sharma for the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award 2020 while Ishant Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, and Deepti Sharma have been nominated for the Arjuna Award. ## The Government of India’s Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports had sought invitations for the respective awards with the period of consideration beginning 1st January 2016 to 31st December 2019.## Team India's vice-captain in the limited-overs cricket, Rohit Sharma has been in stellar form in the white-ball cricket. He was declared ICC ODI Cricketer of the Year for 2019. In the world cup 2019 in England and Wales, Rohit Sharma was the highest run-getter in the tournament with 648 runs in 9 matches. He also became the first player ever to score 5 hundred in a single edition of the world cup. ## Announcing the nominations, BCCI president Sourav Ganguly said, "We went through a lot of data and considered various parameters before shortlisting the nominees. Rohit Sharma has set new benchmarks as a batsman and achieved scores people thought were not possible in the shorter formats of the game. We feel he is worthy of getting the prestigious Khel Ratna award for his commitment, conduct, consistency, and his leadership skills."## On the other hand, the nominees of the Arjuna Award, Ishant Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, and Deepti Sharma have been one of the consistent players for Team India. Shikhar Dhawan's recent form hasn't been up to his standard but he has been India's prolific run-scorer in the white-ball cricket over the years. He is the only player in the history of cricket to won two back to back Golden Bats in the ICC Champions Trophy 2013, and 2017. ## Ishant Sharma is currently the most experienced player in the Indian test team. He has also been very consistent with his performances with the ball in the last couple of years. He has played 97 tests so far and has taken 297 wickets while in 80 ODIs and 14 T20Is, the 31-year old has grabbed 115 and 8 wickets respectively. ## One of the key players of the Indian women's team, Deepti Sharma has been a top-class all-rounder. The 22-year old young batter also holds the record of the highest individual score by an Indian player in the Women's ODI. ## "Ishant Sharma is the most senior member of the Test squad and his contribution has been vital in the Indian team’s long run as the No. 1 Test side. Fast bowlers are prone to injuries and Ishant has had a fair share of them but he has fought hard to be back on the park every time. Shikhar has been consistently scoring at the top and his performances in the ICC events have been significant. Deepti is a genuine all-rounder and her contribution to the team has been vital, Ganguly said.## Talking about the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, it is the highest sporting honour of India. Thus far, only 3 cricketers have been given this award, Sachin Tendulkar (1997-98), Mahendra Singh Dhoni (2007), and Virat Kohli (2018). ## Stay tuned...

An advantage to have a captain like Kohli who wants you to go all-in and play without pressure: Shubman Gill

Indian skipper Virat Kohli has often been criticized for his experimental style of captaincy which leads to regular changes in the team. Some players have raised questions on his captaincy and have often said that making frequent changes make players uncertain about their chances in playing XI. ## However, there is another side of the coin is that he identify the real talent and throws him for the big challenges which hardly had discussed. Shubman Gill who is a big fan of Virat Kohli a player and has also admired his style of captaincy and feels that it is an advantage to have a captain like him. ## "Yes, it's definitely an advantage when your captain wants you to go all-in and there is no pressure. You won't feel that there is one percent of your game that would be left when you are on the field so it's always good for the young players when the captain backs you," Gill told IANS. ## Gill who has had a sensational tournament of the U-19 world cup in 2018 and has been very successful in domestic cricket said that Kohli has talked to him about the importance of consistency in international cricket. ## "I have interacted with him a couple of times. He just tells me to keep doing stuff that I am already doing and to have consistency on the field. Consistency is an important factor, he added.## Shubman Gill hasn't had a great start of his international career where he has played only 2 ODIs and has scored only 16 runs in those matches. However, he is among the few youngsters who are players to watch out for in the near future. ## Virat Kohli too has been impressed with India's fresh crop. Last year while commenting on the youngsters, Kohli had said, "I saw him (Gill) bat in the nets and I was like wow I was not even ten percent of that when I was 19. That's the confidence that they carry and it is great for Indian cricket if the standard keeps going up and the guys coming in can make impact performances straight away and we would be more than happy to give them the chances and help then grow.” ## Stay tuned...

After Suresh Raina, Robin Uthappa wants BCCI to allow Indian players to participate in foreign T20 leagues

A few days after Suresh Raina urged BCCI to allow Indian players to participate in the foreign T20 tournaments, Robin Uthappa too has the same willingness to play in overseas leagues and urges BCCI to let them go to partake in at least 2 overseas T20 leagues. ## Speaking to BBC, Robin Uthappa said, "Please let us go, honest to God. It does hurt when we're not allowed to go and play ... It would be so nice if we could go and play at least a couple of others because as a student of the game you want to learn and grow as much as you can."## Apart from women cricketers who are allowed to play in overseas leagues, BCCI has never allowed men players to play overseas tournaments. However, Robin Uthappa is hopeful that BCCI current president Sourav Ganguly will look into this matter and his progressive thinking will pave a way forward. ## "Ganguly is a very progressive thinking human being, someone who has always looked to take India to the next level. He actually laid the foundation for where India cricket is now," said Uthappa. "We're hoping that he will look at this at some point," Uthappa said. ## The 34-year old, Karnataka born cricketer, Uthappa was a part of India squad that won the inaugural T20I World Cup in 2007 in South Africa under the captaincy of MS Dhoni. Since then he couldn't fix his spot in the team and has been in and out. His last outing in international cricket came in 2015 when he played a T20I against Zimbabwe in Harare. ## Stay tuned...

"Ricky Ponting knows how to bring out the best in someone, he is from another planet", says Rohit Sharma

An opening batsman and the limited-overs vice-captain, Rohit Sharma recalled the time when he got to share the dressing room with former Australian captain, Ricky Ponting, and heap praised the two-time world cup winning captain for his influence on the players as player and coach. In a live chat session on Instagram with spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, Rohit talked about the various things including his stint with Mumbai Indians.## "I feel Ponting is a guy from another planet. He knows how to bring out the best in someone. He has won two World Cups for Australia. So he knows how to win Championships," Rohit told Ashwin.## In IPL 2012, Sachin Tendulkar stepped down from MI's captaincy and Harbhajan Singh was made the captain before he too stepped down in 2013. That time, Rohit felt that he would be the next captain but then Ricky Ponting was bought in the auction.## "In 2013, we got Ricky Ponting in the auction. In 2012 Sachin paaji said that he would not lead Mumbai Indians and Bhajju paa (Harbhajan Singh) was made the skipper. But in 2013, I don't know why Bhajju paa wasn't the captain. And I thought I will be made the captain, but then Ponting was bought in the auction," said Rohit.## "Ponting was the first one to arrive in India for the 2013 season. He wanted to understand everyone. He said that he wanted to have a team bonding session first. In a way, it made a very positive impact on everyone. Ponting really motivated the younger guys," he added.## When Ponting was bought by Mumbai Indians in the auction, he was given captaincy instantly. However, he gave up captaincy after the first six matches in IPL 2013 as he couldn't perform well in those matches. That was the time when Rohit Sharma was handed over MI's leadership before MI won 4 IPL titles under his captaincy.## "But then he was not scoring runs, he decided to step down as the skipper, but eventually Ponting called me and I was given the captaincy. Ponting actually was player-cum-coach during the 2013 season. He was always there to help me," Rohit said.## Rohit Sharma also talked about how his life has changed since the arrival of his baby girl Samaira who he considers his lucky charm. The right-handed also revealed why he has given up on eating the famous street food of Mumbai. ## "I've been out a couple of times, gone to that famous place near Chowpatty. One of the best pav bhaajis you will get there. Now I've got a little one in the house, probably sleeping at that point so there is no chance of going and eating pav bhaajis after midnight," he said. ## Once Virat Kohli had said that Rohit Sharma is one of the laziest people in the team. Now, Rohit has confessed his love for sleeping and said he needs at least 9-10 hours of sleep. ## "It's true that I've never made it to the breakfast table in IPL history, also because of other reasons as it gets very late after matches. I need my 9-10 hours of sleep, that is a must. Since Samaira was born, I used to sleep with her. I somehow managed to sleep with her and wake up with her. Because once she's up your not going to get your sleep," Rohit said.## Stay tuned...

Wisden Announced Top 5 Test Spells Of The 2000s

The Bible of cricket, Wisden announced the top 5 greatest spells of Test cricket of the 2000s on Sunday, May 17. The list includes some of the greatest bowlers of all-time. ## Below is the list of TOP 5 best spells of the 2000s -## 5. Shoaib Akhtar (Pakistan, 6-11 vs New Zealand) - The fastest bowler of all-time, Shoaib Akhtar has been included in the list for his deadly spell of 6 for 11 against New Zealand at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore in 2002. Akhtar proved to be too hot to handle for the New Zealand batsmen who surrendered against the Rawalpindi Express. ## From his 6 wickets, 5 of them were the stump-honing yorkers at the speed over 90mph. His spell was enough to shoot New Zealand out at just 73 runs in the first innings on a pitch where Inzamam-ul-Haq scored a triple hundred (329) and Imran Nazir a Test hundred (127) as Pakistan post a mammoth total of 643. Shoaib Akhtar did not bowl in the second innings but it was just a matter of time before Pakistan completed a massive win of an innings and 324 runs. ## 4. Dale Steyn (South Africa, 5-23 vs India) - Subcontinent pitches have always been a nightmare for the pace bowlers unless there is some help for them. When South Africa toured India in 2008, everyone had thought that India would dominate the Proteas. However, Dale Steyn had some other plans. His spell of 5 for 23 in the second Test at Sardar Patel Stadium, Ahmedabad has been remembered as one of the greatest spells by a pacer in the subcontinent condition. ## It was the magic of his spell that India was bowled out at just 76 in the first innings. All his 5 wickets were classic Steyn. 2 of them were of Virendra Sehwag who was coming in the match with the confidence of the triple century (319) in the first Test that ended up drawn at Nagpur, and the second wicket of Rahul Dravid. Both wickets were bowled out on nearly unplayable deliveries. Because of his spell, South Africa won the match by an innings and 90 runs. India won the third test and drawn the series. Dale Steyn was the second-highest wicket-taker after Harbhajan Singh of the 3-match series with 15 wickets. ## 3. Glenn McGrath (Australia, 5-53 vs England) - In his mid-30s but still good enough to made batsmen dance on his tunes, Glenn McGrath was always been tough to pick at any stage. In the first Test of the Ashes 2005 at the Lord’s, his home away from home, clueless England surrendered against the might McGrath. ## After bowling Australia out at 190 in the first innings, England was a happy side until McGrath turned their happiness into sadness with his not so pacy but swinging spell at the Home of Cricket. Apart from Kevin Pietersen's fifty, no other batsmen could do much against McGrath as England managed to score only 155 in the first innings. Australia batted well in the second innings and set a target of 419 runs for England to win. McGrath took 4 wickets in the second innings as well as the target proved to be too big for England. Australia won the opening test of the Ashes 2005 by 239 runs and go 1-0 up in the series. ## 2. Harbhajan Singh (India, 8-84 vs Australia) - When the world number 1 Australia toured India in 2001, they were reasonably favorite to win the Test series, and unsurprisingly, they begin the series with an easy win of 10-wickets in Mumbai. India was under a lot of pressure to prove themselves in front of their home crowd. In the second Test at Eden Gardens that was going to be written in history books, Australia again had the upper hand at the end of the first innings of each team before VVS Laxman pulled off one of the greatest knocks of the Test cricket of all-time. ## Laxman's marathon knock of 281 and his partnership with Rahul Dravid (180) of 376 for the fifth wicket proved to be a series changing moment. With the help of these two knocks, India set a target of 383 runs for Australia to win that proved too big for the Aussies to win. However, if Laxman and Dravid were the stars in batting, Harbhajan Singh had his match with the ball. He took 6-wickets in the first innings and then spun Australia with 7-wickets in the second innings as India won the match by 171 runs and level the series 1-1 before going into the third and final Test.## Both the teams were well prepared for the series decider so was Harbhajan Singh who was going to write his own script. To the start of the third Test, Australia batted fairly well with the help of Matthew Hayden's double century (203) as they got 391 in the first innings at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. Harbhajan Singh however, was in his own zone as he took 7-wickets in the first innings. India then responded very well with the bat after the half-centuries from SS Das, S Ramesh, VVS Laxman, Rahul Dravid, and masterclass hundred from Sachin Tendulkar (126) as India got 501 in response.## Now, the stage was set for Harbhajan Singh to show his skills once again in the series that he has already made his own. He took 8 wickets in the second innings and stopped Australia at 264. India chased the target with 2-wickets in hand and won the hard-fought series with the scoreline of 2-1. Harbhajan Singh awarded player of the series for 32 wickets in 3 matches. ## 1. Muttiah Muralitharan (Sri Lanka, 8-70 vs England) - A magician who would trouble any batsman on any day and on any pitch with his spin bowling, Muttiah Muralitharan, the legend, turned out to be too hot for England to handle. In the third and final Test at Trent Bridge, Nottingham, England were chasing 325 to win the match and series. ## In pursuit of 325, England was marching very well and things were looking dark and blank for Sri Lanka before Muralitharan lightened a hope for the Lankans. From 84 for none, in the space of 22 overs, Muralitharan had dismissed the entirety of England’s top six. It was some top six, too. Trescothick, Strauss, Alastair Cook, Kevin Pietersen, Paul Collingwood, and Andrew Flintoff all had no idea against Muralitharan who started to turn the things very quickly. In no time, England was reduced to 125-6 from 84-0. The remaining last 4 couldn't do much as England bowled out on 190. Sri Lanka won the match by 134 and drawn the series. ## After looking at Muralitharan spinning English batsmen, Geoffrey Boycott perfectly summed up the challenge facing England’s batsmen that day at Trent Bridge by saying "I really don’t know how you score off Murali at the moment, surviving is pretty difficult”. ## Muttiah Muralitharan's that spell of 8-70 has been declared the greatest Test spell of the 2000s by the Cricketers' Almanack' or the 'Bible of cricket' Wisden. ## Stay tuned...
