Mumbai, October 26 - When things were going bad to worst, it was a sequel to a superhit movie that brought Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar, who used to be a box office guarantee a couple of years back, back in the game in the form of social comedy-drama OMG 2.

Though Akshay Kumar only played an extended role the movie sold on his name and the brand value of the "OMG" franchise. "OMG 2" was released during the Independence Day weekend of 2023 and was up against a tsunami-like "Gadar 2", still, it managed a take a decent opening before word of mouth spread its magic.



Directed by Amit Rai, the sequel minted over 72 crores net during its extended 5-day Independence Day weekend after taking the opening of over 10 crores. The movie scored the opening week collection of 85 crores net and from there on, it performed consistently well to take the final collection past 150 crores net and became only the 6th film of the year to do so.

Overseas, "OMG 2" performed reasonably well and grossed approximately 43 crores, for over 221 crores worldwide collection. Made on a controlled budget of around 60 crores, the film emerged as a super hit at the box office.

Things weren't easy for "OMG 2" as it faced many challenges before hitting screens. The movie got an adult certificate from CBFC though the makers wanted a 'U/A' certificate as the movie had an important social message to tell. The makers relied on the brand value of the franchise and didn't promote much and this strategy worked for the movie that scored a triumph against all odds. It also scored a few milestones at the box office which are as follows -

- Became the second highest-grossing film for Akshay Kumar in the post-Covid-19 era, after Sooryavanshi (2021).

- Became actor Pankaj Tripathi's highest-grossing film worldwide and the first 100 crores net grosser in a lead role.

- Became director Amit Rai's highest-grossing film worldwide and first 100 crores net grosser.

- Became Akshay Kumar's 16th 100 crores net grosser, joint highest for an Indian actor with Salman Khan.
