Hiroshi Tanahashi is the new NEVER Openweight Champion as he defeated Shingo Takagi (c) at NJPW The New Beginning In Nagoya.

NJPW The New Beginning In Nagoya main event saw a NEVER Openweight Championship match between Hiroshi Tanahashi and Shingo Takagi (c), Hiroshi Tanahashi with a High Fly Flow and becomes the new NEVER Openweight Champion in the first reign.



His accolades in NJPW include being a record setting eight-time IWGP Heavyweight Champion, a two-time IWGP Intercontinental Champion, a three-time IWGP Tag Team Champion and a three-time NEVER Openweight 6-Man Tag Team Champion. Tanahashi holds the record for most reigns as the IWGP Heavyweight Champion, while his fifth reign held the record for most successful defenses with eleven until May 5, 2018.
