All Elite Wrestling (AEW) was founded on January 1, 2019, and introduced its men's world championship at the inaugural event, Double or Nothing, on May 25, 2019. Chris Jericho became the inaugural champion after defeating "Hangman" Adam Page. A championship belt theft added drama, but it was recovered shortly after.## In 2022, CM Punk's injury led to the creation of an interim championship. Jon Moxley won this title by defeating Hiroshi Tanahashi. Punk's return led to a title unification match, with Moxley emerging as the victor.## However, a post-event altercation resulted in suspensions and the vacating of championships. A new champion was crowned in the AEW Grand Slam Tournament of Champions, with Moxley winning his third title in the tournament final on September 21, 2022.
