The WWE Universal Championship is one of WWE's major titles, alongside the WWE Championship. Currently held by Roman Reigns in his second reign, it has the longest reign in the title's history. Reigns defends both titles together, known as the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship, while each title retains its own history.



The championship was named after WWE's fanbase, the WWE Universe, and was established on July 25, 2016, as Raw's top title. This change followed the brand split on July 19, 2016, where the WWE Championship became exclusive to SmackDown.

The inaugural Universal Champion was Finn Bálor. Over the years, the championship has been showcased in various events, including six consecutive SummerSlams from 2017 to 2022 and four WrestleManias (34, 37 Night 2, 38 Night 2, and 39 Night 2), which are among WWE's most prominent pay-per-views. In 2019, due to events at Crown Jewel, the Universal and WWE Championships switched brands.
