'Yeh Kaali Kaali Ankhen' Review: A Teasing Thriller That Fails To Deliver

Series: 'Yeh Kaali Kaali Ankhen' (Streaming on Netflix)## Duration: Averages 40 minutes per episode## Director: Sidharth Sengupta## Cast: Tahir Raj Bhasin, Shweta Tripathi Sharma, Anchal Singh, Saurabh Shukla, Bijendra Kala, Surya Sharma, Anantvijay Joshi, Sunita Rajwar## IANS Rating: *** (3 star) Designed as a pulpy thriller this eight-episode series is an engaging, psychological romance drama set in the backdrop of crime and power.## Based in the fictional town of Onkara, 'Yeh Kaali Kaali Ankhein' follows a recently graduated engineering student Vikrant who is the cynosure of Purva's eyes since her school days. Purva is the daughter of the local, all-powerful politician Akheraj Awasthi who would go to any length to keep his daughter happy.## Years later, circumstances make their paths meet when Vikrant after finishing his studies, is forced by his father to seek Akheraj's blessings and maybe a "job". Vikrant's father works as an accountant for Akheraj and is indebted to him on various grounds.## Vikrant unenthusiastically lands up at Akheraj's premise and by happenstance meets Purva, who ensures that her father offers him a job as the manager of her Zumba classes with a plump salary. Instead of getting elated, Vikrant is not happy because he can't fathom how he'd put his engineering education to use in a dead-end job.## Also, unbeknownst to his family, he is in love with his college mate Shikha Agarwal and dreams of settling with her in Bhilai, where he hopes to get a job.## So, the next day after promising Shikha that he would marry her, Vikrant goes to Akheraj's office intending to tell Akheraj that he is not interested in working for him. While he is there, he witnesses an event that repulses him. He then goes to Purva and tells her that he is not interested in working for her family, but the events that follow make it clear that he can't escape Purva's clutches.## So, he reluctantly accepts to work and later even marries Purva with the intention of revenge. How he attempts to break free from Purva and her family, forms the crux of the narrative. The characters are all well-etched, and the lines they mouth are refreshing at times may even be soapy that drives too many aspects of the dramatic narrative.## Tahir Raj Bhasin as Vikrant is impressive. You feel and root for him as he takes you through Vikrant's emotional journey from a simpleton to a determined lover wanting to marry the person he loves. Similarly striking are Vikrant's friend Golden, and Bijendra Kala, who essays his father. For a change, Kala brings his character to life with his charged histrionics. The rest of the cast backed by familiarity is sincere but passable.## On the writing front, the plot of the series is straightforward, with the screenplay often teasing at some outlandish possibilities. The pace of the telling keeps you hanging to the ledge. It is only the final episode with its abrupt ending that leaves you a bit disappointed, for it does not fulfill the promise it assured us in the first episode.## Stay tuned...

Carbon Review: A refreshingly fresh investigative thriller that impresses

Film: Carbon (Releasing in Theatres). Duration: 125 minutes.## Director: Srinuvasan. Cast: Vidhaarth, Dhanya B., Marimuthu and Munar Ramesh.## IANS Rating: ***1/2## Director Srinuvasan's 'Carbon' is a refreshingly fresh investigative thriller that keeps you hooked from start to finish, thanks to an innovative plot that has some really interesting twists right till the very end.## The film's story revolves around Shankar (Vidaarth), a wannabe policeman who ends up taking up a job in a private firm because of a quarrel with his dad (played by Marimuthu).## Shankar has a strange gift. He often has dreams and more importantly, his dreams come true. One night, the man dreams of his dad being hit by a black SUV. The nightmare leaves him shaken. He wakes up breaking into a sweat and frantically begins to search for his dad only to realize that he has had an accident just as he had dreamed.## Shankar rushes his unconscious dad to the hospital, where doctors tell him that it's imperative that they perform a surgery that is going to cost him a fortune. The only way out for Shankar will be to find the person responsible for the accident and claim the insurance amount.## With the cops not making any serious effort to find the driver of the vehicle, Shankar realizes he will have to carry out the investigation himself.## It is at this point that one night, sitting beside his dad's bed, he dozes off out of sheer exhaustion. That's when he has a dream in which he sees the SUV that caused the accident. The door of the SUV opens and just as the driver is to get out, Shankar is woken up by the woman who cleans the hospital ward.## In the desperate hope that the same dream could reappear if he did all the tasks that he did that particular day, Shankar attempts a repeat the next day.## Things don't work out initially and the dream does not appear. Waiting for the dream to recur, Shankar, with the help of his sharp sense of observation, realizes that it was not just a hit-and-run case; it was actually an attempt to murder his dad. Who would want to murder his dad and why would they want to do it? Does Shankar find out the criminal? And does he save his dad? 'Carbon' gives you the answers.## The film is a gripping thriller and full marks to director Srinuvasan for having told the story in a neat and compact manner. Half of the credit for the film being tight and gripping should go to editor K.L. Praveen for his brilliant cuts. There are absolutely no unnecessary scenes and the story moves at a blistering pace, right from the word 'go'.## Within the first 10 minutes of the film, the director showcases the strong bond of love between the father and son, who despite not being on talking terms with each other, deeply care about one another. And within the same period, he also explains everything about Shankar's dreams and their tendency to come true.## Sam CS's background score provides ample support to the director who is looking to narrate a gripping thriller. His score captures the mood and amplifies it, making sure the audience has no trouble in understanding the emotion the director is looking to convey.## Vidhaarth as Shankar is just outstanding in the film, which incidentally happens to be his 25th. He plays the part to perfection and wins your heart hands down.## Dhanya B, who appears in the film just before the intermission, is perfect for the role and delivers a commendable performance. The reason why the second half is as intense as the first is primarily because of Dhanya's characterization and contribution.## Maarimuthu as Vidhaarth's dad delivers a commendable performance. The care and concern that he showcases while appearing to be strict to his son is just so adorable.## Director Srinuvasan, while narrating a thrilling entertainer, also actually highlights a fact that Tamil cinema has often chosen to misinterpret. It looks to set the record straight with regard to dad-son relationships and highlights that for every son his dad is a hero. And that invariably, sons love their dads as much as their mothers, if not more.## Some of the dialogues in the film are deep and hit the nail on the head. For instance, there is this scene in which the heroine asks the hero, "Sons are supposed to be close to their mothers. You seem to be different." To this, the hero replies, "When a man's mother passes away, her place is filled by his wife. But when a man's dad passes away, that place remains vacant. This is why sons miss dads a lot more than their mothers. The position that dads hold in a son's life is special".## It is not as if the film has no problems. There are some lapses in logic towards the end of the film. Also, the manner in which cops are showcased in the film dents the realism somewhat. But these are small lapses that can be forgiven.## On the whole, 'Carbon' is a good, neat, sleek investigative thriller that is definitely worth your time.## Stay tuned...

Chiranjeevi Meets Andhra CM Over Movie Ticket Pricing Row

Amaravati, Jan 13 (IANS) Amid a raging row between the Andhra Pradesh government and Tollywood over movie ticket prices, megastar Chiranjeevi called on Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy here on Thursday.## On the invitation of the Chief Minister, Chiranjeevi had a meeting with him over lunch at the latter's official residence at Tadepalli here. After reaching Gannavaram airport by a special flight from Hyderabad, the popular actor and former Central minister drove straight to the CM's house.## After the meeting that lasted for one-and-a-half hours, the actor told reporters at the airport that Reddy responded positively to the issues raised by him on behalf of the film industry, exhibitors, and theatre owners.## Terming the meeting fruitful, Chiranjeevi hoped that all the problems will be solved soon in a manner acceptable to all. Chiranjeevi said the Chief Minister assured him that a mutually acceptable decision will be taken.## Chiranjeevi quoted Reddy as saying that he will not take any one-sided decision. The CM also assured that nobody needs to feel insecure.## Reddy told Chiranjeevi that he will convey the issues raised by him to the committee constituted by the government, and a draft will be prepared following which Chiranjeevi will be invited again for consultation before the issuance of a government order.## The actor said he would discuss the draft with all the stakeholders in the industry, and he would be happy to take them along to meet the Chief Minister next time. Chiranjeevi also appealed to all in the industry to avoid issuing statements on the issue. "I am making a request not as an industry elder, but as a son of the industry," he said.## The meeting and Chiranjeevi's appeal came amid a bitter war of words between some Tollywood personalities and Cinematography Minister Perni Nani and leaders of the ruling YSR Congress party. Several producers, actors, exhibitors, and theatre owners have slammed the state government for slashing movie ticket prices, which has led to the closure of some cinemas.## Chiranjeevi said he apprised Reddy of the concerns of all in the wake of the uncertainty prevailing for the last few months. He said Reddy invited him as he wanted to hear the other side of the story.## While appreciating the government's intention to make entertainment affordable for the common man, Chiranjeevi put forward the problems of the film industry, exhibitors, theatre owners, and others.## "The film industry is not just glamour or rosy as it appears. There is hard work of many workers behind it. The majority of them work on daily wages," he said. The actor recalled that during the pandemic, many workers suffered a lot for four months as they did not get any work.## He said that similarly, workers in theatres are worried about losing their jobs due to closures. He claimed that the Chief Minister also responded positively for allowing theatres to have the fifth show on special occasions.## Chiranjeevi said he gave constructive suggestions and the Chief Minister wrote down some points. He hoped that a draft will come in a week or 10 days while a final government order will be issued in 2-3 weeks.## Stay tuned...

Limited Re-Release To Mark 'The Godfather' 50th Anniversary

Los Angeles, Jan 14 (IANS) The trailer for the 50th-anniversary limited theatrical re-release of Francis Ford Coppola's classic 'The Godfather', starring Marlon Brando and some of the greatest actors of all times, "is, if nothing else, a reminder that the great mobster movie unleashed some of the most memorable lines of dialogue in Hollywood history," reports 'Deadline'.## The one that is most often repeated: "I'm going to make him an offer he can't refuse." Only Brando could have made this line sound so sinister. Or the lines delivered by a young Al Pacino: "Don't ever take sides against the family again." And to Diane Keaton's character: "Don't ask me about my business, Kay".## Paramount Pictures released the new trailer on Thursday (U.S. Pacific Time) with the announcement that the film will have a limited 50th anniversary theatrical release in Dolby Vision beginning from February 25, exclusively in Dolby Cinema at AMC Theatres in the U.S. and international territories around the world.## A statement from Paramount Pictures introducing the trailer reads: "No movie changed Hollywood more than The Godfather. From the bestselling novel by Mario Puzo to box-office blockbuster, its influential legacy endures to this day".## The statement notes: "Starring Marlon Brando in his Oscar-winning performance as the patriarch of the Corleone family, this first instalment in the three-movie saga paints a dramatic portrait of the Sicilian clan's rise and near fall from power in America.## And it concludes by reminding the film's diehard aficionados: "Balanced between the Corleone's commitment to family and the ugly crime business in which they are engaged, it features career-making performances by Al Pacino, James Caan, Talia Shire, Diane Keaton and Robert Duvall. This searing and brilliant masterpiece garnered 10 Academy Award nominations, and won three, including Best Picture".## According to 'Deadline', all three films in the trilogy -- 'The Godfather', 'The Godfather: Part II', and Coppola's recently re-edited version of the final film, 'Mario Puzo's The Godfather, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone' -- have been restored under his direction and will be made available on 4K Ultra HD and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray for the first time ever on March 22.## Stay tuned...

Dulquer Salmaan Records Rap Song For 'Hey Sinamika' In Just 90 Mins

Chennai, Jan 14 (IANS) Actor Dulquer Salmaan, who has sung the song 'Achammillai' for his upcoming Tamil film 'Hey Sinamika', is believed to have recorded the energetic rap number in a matter of just an hour and a half.## Before singing the song, Dulquer got his Tamil pronunciation right with lyricist Madhan Karky, post which he was ready for the recording.## Talking about the recording, debutant director Brinda Master said: "I was clear from the beginning that I wanted Dulquer to sing this song. But our music composer Govind Vasantha and I were also a bit apprehensive because Dulquer, though he is a good singer, has never sung in Tamil before and the lyrics are a bit tough and the pace of the song is very fast.## "But when we suggested to Dulquer that he should sing this song, he agreed readily. The song required a swag and attitude, which only professional rappers can exude, but Dulquer managed to do so with ease. Dulquer has sung the song with gusto and has put his full energy and soul into it".## As a treat to all Dulquer fans, the makers decided to release the lyrical video of the song on Friday.## 'Hey Sinamika' marks the directorial debut of ace choreographer Brinda Master and stars Dulquer Salmaan, Aditi Rao Hydari, and Kajal Aggarwal in lead roles.
