Neena Kulkarni: Marathi films are content-driven, people notice now

Mumbai, April 5 (IANS) Veteran actress Neena Kulkarni who is constantly balancing theatre, film, television, and OTT, feels it is great that regional cinema is being celebrated by the larger audience, beyond regions. She believes regional cinema, especially Marathi cinema, is always known for its content.## "Marathi films are always ahead of the time with story and experimentation of storytelling. In recent years, the number of films and budgets have increased. Marathi theatre is always very rich, so there was never a dearth of content. It is only now that people have started to recognize. I have been doing a Marathi theatre and films for many decades. For us, back then the next step after-theatre was films and not TV. Now, we get to explore interesting stories even in web series," Neena told IANS.## In Bollywood, the actress has appeared in films like "Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani", "Nayak: The Real Hero", "Hungama", "Paheli", "Hasee Toh Phasee" while her Marathi filmography includes "Shevri", "Gandha", "Mogra Phulaalaa", "Kulkarni Chaukatla Deshpande" to name a few.## Earlier this year, she featured in the short film "Devi" that shows the story of rape victims of different generations. The film also featured Kajol, Shruti Haasan, and Neha Dhupia among others.## "Although I have worked in several Hindi films, over the past two years I did not work in any (Hindi film) because I am getting more interesting roles in Marathi (films). These days, I have noticed how people make ‘message-oriented' films. That is a positive change and I appreciate that but we must not go away from simple stories. There is something beautiful in simple stories about husbands and wives, children and parents, and simple human stories. They hold a certain sweet, happy feeling in the minds of the audience," she said.## "Under the pressure of making impactful cinema, we must not lose out on warm, sweet stories of life. A love story is as real any story of struggle," Neena signed off.## Stay tuned...

Umesh Kamat: Marathi actors get more scope to explore various mediums

Mumbai, April 3 (IANS) Renowned Marathi actor Umesh Kamat, who recently appeared in the new season of the couple drama "Aani Kay Hava", says that Marathi actors have the advantage of exploring all the avenues of acting -- whether it is stage, TV, cinema or web shows -- as opposed to actors of other film industries like Bollywood and Tollywood.## "I think Marathi actors have more opportunity to explore different mediums of entertainment as opposed to other regional film actors. For instance, lead actors of Hindi, Tamil, or Malayalam cinema usually do not act in TV, theatre and web shows alongside the mainstream cinema. But I, as an actor, have worked in all the mediums. That way, I think we are lucky. Our fans are ready to watch us on TV every day and will buy a ticket and go to the theatre to watch our films," Umesh told IANS.## "Aani Kay Hava" revolves around a married couple, Juhi and Saket, and the internal conversation of their relationships. The show also features Priya Bapat, Siddharth Jadhav, and Sai Tamhankar.## The second season of the series released recently after a successful season one on MX Player. The actor says he is receiving a lot of responses not only from the Marathi audience but also across the nation, adding that a positive change is happening in the regional entertainment space, and the audience is expanding.## "With time, slowly but surely we will build the audience for digital content as well. Although initially, we used to think that only youngsters would watch these because they spending time on the phone, that is not true. I am surprised to see how the older generation is also watching regional content on digital platforms because of accessibility," said the actor, who has appeared in films like "Lagna Pahave Karun", "Time Please", "A Paying Ghost", "Asehi Ekada Vhave" and TV series like "Asambhav" and "Eka Lagnachi Dusri Goshta" among others.## Umesh added: "It is true that earlier as an audience even if I wanted, I could not get access to a Malayalam film as easily as I can get it now on OTT platforms. So, I think the language barrier is going away and regional content is really reaching out to people beyond regions and languages."## Stay tuned...

Swwapnil Joshi: Experience gave me the ability to sustain failure

Mumbai, March 30 (IANS) He was just a teenager when he played the title role of Lord Krishna in Ramanand Sagar's mythological TV show "Krishna" in 1993. Since then there has been no looking back for actor Swwapnil Joshi who went on to act in various TV series, excelled in Marathi films and is currently wining accolades for his role in the Marathi web series "Samantar". The actor says starting early has given him the strength to handle success and failure much better and a sustainable career.## He says a lot has changed in the business of entertainment since the time he did his first TV show at the age of nine. "Experience has given me the ability to sustain failure. I was quite young when I started and back then I was not doing things for success. Working in the industry for so long has made me realise that not everything that I will do with conviction will become a huge success, but I still have to believe in myself and I should have faith," Swwapnil told IANS.## His is currently seen playing the title role of the web series "Samantar" that also features Krishna Bharadwaj and Tejaswini Pandit. The series streams on the OTT platform MX Player.## The actor has appeared in successful Marathi films such as "Checkmate", "Amhi Satpute", "Mumbai-Pune-Mumbai", "Duniyadari", "Mangalashtak Once More", "Pyaar Vali Love Story", "Mitwaa", "Laal Ishq", and "Mogra Phulaalaa" among others.## Talking about his method of choosing scripts, Swwapnil shared: "I do not commit to a project without a bound script and I read it through. I am not one of them with whom a writer can come and discuss a one-liner and I commit to the idea and then the script turns out to be something else. No, I have to know the script because that is the backbone of the project."## "That apart I also have the parameter of who is the director and which production house is backing the project. At times, the story is good but not well executed or maybe not well marketed and properly released. Once the foundation, the script, is in place, without these two things, a film or a show cannot be materialised. Again, this is one of the factors that experience taught me," he also mentioned.## Stay tuned...
