'Godzilla vs. Kong' Director Adam Wingard To Return For New Legendary MonsterVerse Movie

Los Angeles, April 28, 2021: After the hugely successful box office run of "Godzilla vs. Kong", Legendary Pictures has reportedly begun preparation for a new movie in its MonsterVerse franchise. Director Adam Wingard, who has helmed "Godzilla vs. Kong", is in talks to return to direct the new monster film. ## "Godzilla vs. Kong", which debuted in theaters on March 31 in the USA, has grossed over $400 million at the box office, marking the highest-grossing Hollywood release of the pandemic era. The movie was released simultaneously on the streaming platform, HBO Max as part of Warner Bros' multi-platform release strategy for the studio's 2021 slate. ## "Godzilla vs. Kong" is the fourth movie in the franchise since Legendary kicked off their MonsterVerse plans, after partnering with Japan's Toho Studios for 2014's "Godzilla". The other two movies in the franchise are 2017's "Kong Skull Island" (the franchise's current box office leader with more than $566 million worldwide) and 2019's "Godzilla: King of the Monsters". ## Adam Wingard would be the first to return for a second film. Warner Bros.' Mortal Combat Tops The Domestic Box Office In The Opening Weekend

Los Angeles, April 27, 2021: Warner Bros.' "Mortal Combat" did surprisingly well in the opening weekend at the domestic box office. The movie grossed $23.3 million and topped its debut weekend in North America. The movie, which is R-rated, blown away the local surveys which predicted a maximum of $15 million in the first weekend in the domestic market. These are the signs that the US box office is on a steadfast recovery path given the fact that all Warner Bros. movies of 2021 are scheduled to release in theaters and studios streaming platform, HBO Max simultaneously. "Mortal Combat", however, facing tough competition from " Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train", the feature film based on a popular shonen anime. It had the second-best run in the opening weekend with $21.1 million. Demon Slayer is already the highest-grossing Japanese film of all time, in the animated and live-action category. The 93rd Academy Awards' TV Ratings At All-Time Low In Early Numbers

Los Angeles, April 27, 2021: The 93rd Academy Awards ceremony, which was held in the early morning (as per IST) on Monday (April 26), couldn't grab the attention of the audience, as the TV Ratings of the ceremony was all-time low as per early numbers. ## This year's Oscars joined the recent awards shows such as Grammys, Golden Globes, and SAG Awards, which witnessed a sharp decline in tv viewing from the previous year. As per early numbers, the 93rd Oscars drew 9.85 million viewers and a 1.9 rating among adults of 18-49 on Sunday. However, the final numbers may increase after they come out on Tuesday. ## Last year, the numbers were high with 23.64 million viewers and 5.3 ratings in the key ad demographic. The decline of 58 percent for Oscars 2021 is the second-highest after Golden Globes (62 percent) in the recently organized award shows. The Grammys and SAG Awards also had witnessed a decline of more than 50 percent from their previous year. ## Despite making changes in the format of the show, the reviews for the Oscars were mixed. Mortal Combat Opens Well At The Domestic Box Office Despite Tough Competition With Demon Slayer

The US box office is well and truly back in the business after a horrible one year. After Godzilla vs. Kong gave a major push to the domestic theatrical business, the latest release, Mortal Kombat, and Demon Slayer have further strengthened the grip. Both Mortal Combat and Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, have blown away all the expectations regarding their box office run. On Friday (April 23), Mortal Combat grossed around $9 million while Demon Slayer, with a slight edge, earned approx $9.5 million. The box office numbers for both the movies are amazing considering the fact that both are R-rated and somewhat limiting their potential audience. Plus, only 58% of US theaters are operational, and that too with just around 30% occupancy while Canada's 5.8K theaters are open with only 20% occupancy. As per the local surveys, Mortal Combat was forecast to earn less than $15 million in the opening weekend, which now seems far too low than the actual numbers once they will come out after the weekend. The movie is definitely heading for around $22-24 million in the opening weekend. The 2021 releases of the Warner Bros. are debuting simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max. It's part of the studio’s gambit to shake up the way it's distributing its films in the COVID era. However, it was a move that was widely criticized as it will dent chances for theatrical business to recover quickly. The studio, however, announced that its movies from 2022 onwards will release in the theaters first then on HBO Max after 45 days. Disney Bags The Streaming Rights To Sony Pictures Films After Netflix Window Expires

After the historic deal with Netflix earlier this month, Sony Pictures has now inked another landmark deal with Disney, which will allow the platform to stream Sony's films on its streaming and TV platforms. ## The new deal, which will cover Sony's entire theatrical slate from 2022-26, will bring the films to Disney-owned streaming services Disney+ and Hulu, as well as to Disney's linear TV networks, including ABC, Disney Channels, Freeform, FX, and National Geographic.## However, as per Sony's earlier deal, Netflix will have the right to stream Sony pictures first after they completed their theatrical run. Amazon Prime Video's 'The Rings of Power' First Season Cost A Whopping $462 Million

Mumbai, February 11 - Amazon Prime Video has spent millions of dollars for the upcoming epic fantasy adventure The Lord of the Rings series, titled "The Rings of Power". The company bought the television rights for series for a whopping US$250 million in November 2017, making a five-season production commitment worth at least US$1 billion. ## Now, it is reported that the first season of "The Rings of Power" TV show will cost the retail giant an unimaginable over $462 million to produce, making it one of the costliest series ever made. ## In April last year, New Zealand's minister for economic development and tourism revealed that the fantasy drama will be one of the most costly television series ever made, with its season one price tag coming in at around $465 million.## With this kind of price, it is likly the highest amount ever spent for a single season of any TV series. For comparison, HBO's "Game of Thrones" cost around $100 million per season. Season one episodes cost around $6 million each and eventually rose to around $15 million by season eight.## Among the other top productions, Disney spent around "100 million" on the first season of The Mandalorian. Marvel's "Wanda Vision" to cost Disney around US$25 million per episode and nine episodes comprise max at US$225 million. But none is as big as Amazon's "The Lord of the Rings".## "The Rings of Power" series is developed by J. D. Payne, and Patrick McKay based on "The Lord of The Rings" stories by J. R. R. Tolkien. The series, set thousands of years before the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, begins during a time of relative peace and covers all of the major events from the Second Age of Middle-earth: the forging of the Rings of Power, the rise of the Dark Lord Sauron, the story of the island kingdom of Númenor, and the last alliance between Elves and Men.## It stars Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Robert Aramayo, Owain Arthur, Maxim Baldry, Nazanin Boniadi, Morfydd Clark, Ismael Cruz Córdova, Charles Edwards, among others in prominent roles. John Cena On Action In Fast & Furious, 'It Is Not Senseless'

WWE champion and Hollywood star, John Cena is the latest addition to the ninth main installment of the Fast & Furious franchise. The 43-year-old star will be seen playing the character of Jacob Toretto, brother of Dominic Toretto played by Vin Diesel. ## Cena will be seen performing high octane action scenes in the Justin Lin directorial which is the sequel to The Fate of the Furious (2017). He admits being aware he is getting the opportunity to be a part of a legacy body of work and adds that the franchise is not senseless action.## "I love the perspective of F9, of Dom (Dominic Toretto) having to face Jacob, his blood family. Someone that has been forgotten and long lost. I have to be equal to Dom or greater than Dom to be challenging, to let the viewer get to the edge of their seat and get knocked back in their chair." "But what I love about the franchise is that it is not senseless action for the sake of action. It will deliver", Cena told select media globally, during the trailer launch on Wednesday. ## Speaking about the upcoming installment, Cena said, "Now we get to dive into the concept of, yes, we can choose who we love and we can choose who we are close to, and call them family, even if they don't share our last name. We cannot run away from our past and choices".## "Sooner or later, if we have any regrets, if we have any second thoughts, and if we have any self-doubt we have to look into that glass and face it and that's what I love about the power and gravity of this. This movie delivers on so many fronts, the trailer leaves so much meat on the bone and that's what I am really excited about," Cena added.## F9 was originally scheduled for worldwide release in April 2019 but was delayed several times, first due to the releases of Hobbs & Shaw (2019) and No Time to Die (2021), and then the COVID-19 pandemic. Godzilla vs. Kong Leapfrog Tenet To Become Top Grosser Of Pandemic Era In The US

Legendary and Warner Bros' big-budget spectacle Godzilla vs. King has lived up to its expectations and broke all domestic records of the pandemic era in the first week itself. Netflix Acquires Streaming Rights To Sony Feature Films Starting In 2022 In US

The leading streaming giant, Netflix has grabbed gold by signing a new multiyear deal with Sony Pictures. According to the contract, Netflix will be the first to stream Sony Feature Films beginning from 2022 after they complete their theatrical run in the USA. These films include Uncharted, Morbius, Bullet Train & Where The Crawdads Sing, along with future sequels to Venom, Jumanji, Bad Boys & Spiderman: Into The Spider-Verse.## Sony Pictures' primary pay-TV partner has been Starz, now owned by Lionsgate, since 2006. The new theatrical output deal with Netflix is believed to run about five years and is said to have worth hundreds of millions of dollars to the studio over the term. Industry sources said (according to Variety) Sony executives are working on another significant theatrical movie licensing pact outside the Netflix agreement.## Netflix is an obvious first pay window choice for Sony, given that the company already has a deal for its animated releases with Netflix. But the new deal is far more comprehensive and will see Sony's theatrical films from its Columbia Pictures, Sony Pictures Classics, Screen Gems, and TriStar Pictures studios all head to Netflix after completing their theatrical run. ## Starting in 2022, Netflix will be the first US streaming home for Sony Pictures films following their theatrical releases.
