Box Office: Fast & Furious 9 Sees Major Drop At The China Box Office Amid John Cena Controversy
Log Angeles, May 31, 2021: Universal's high-octane action film, "Fast & Furious 9", has been hit hard after the first week at the Chines box office due to poor reviews and the John Cena controversy.
After roaring with $135.5 million in the opening weekend, F9 witnessed a massive downfall of 85% in its second weekend, earning just $20.8 million. The total collection of F9 has reached $185.3 million after the second weekend at the China box office.
The downfall in the second weekend is largely caused by poor word of mouth. Its social scores on Maoyan are 7.5 and 5.5 on Douban — lower than most major titles released this year. Other than weak reviews, many are saying that the John Cena controversy of calling Taiwan a country, has also played a spoiler.
The actor and professional wrestler, Cena had to apologize to fans in China for his remark, which put him among the Hollywood celebrities who have previously faced a similar kind of situation and had to apologize for the same.
Meanwhile, at the same point in time, F9 is slightly ahead as compared to the franchise's previous release, Hobbs & Shaw. However, the further course is looking dim for F9 as Chinese ticketing app Maoyan currently projects the movie to finish at $211.9 million.
A sequel to The Fate of the Furious (2017), F9 stars Vin Diesel, John Cena, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris "Ludacris" Bridges, Jordana Brewster, Nathalie Emmanuel, Sung Kang, Michael Rooker, Helen Mirren, Kurt Russell, and Charlize Theron.
