F9 was
projected to score between $50-$70 million in the opening domestic weekend, and by surprising everyone, the movie opened to the highest projection of $70 million in the first three days, after debuting with $30 million on Friday, a single-day record for the pandemic era, includes $7.1 million in previews.
The Universal Pic also broke the pandemic era box office record for North America and the biggest domestic opening since Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in December 2019. The movie is playing nearly 4,200 theaters in North America, which is the widest count for any film opening in recent months.
F9 easily surpassed the $60 million domestic launch of 2019 spinoff Hobbs & Shaw, unadjusted for inflation, but couldn't match the $98.8 million start of The Fate of the Furious in 2017, underscoring that the fragile nature of the box office recovery. Globally, F9 has crossed $400 million including nearly $210 million from the Chinese box office.
Paramount Pictures' horror-thriller flick, A Quiet Place Part II previously held the record for a pandemic-era opening after grossing $57.1 million over the long Memorial Day weekend, including $47.5 million for the three-day weekend.
It is also the first Hollywood movie to cross the $100 million mark in the domestic market, with a current domestic gross of $136.4 million and $248.5 million globally.
F9 will be the only third Hollywood flick after A Quiet Place Part II, and Godzilla vs. Kong, to reach the $100 million mark in the USA.
