Kochi, May 5 - The Malayalam film industry is on the rise and performing above its shoulders at the box office over the last 12 months or so. Since last year, Mollywood has delivered five 100+ crores grossers out of total 7 films at the worldwide box office, and it began with 2018.

The Tovino Thomas-led real-life inspired disaster survival thriller turns 1 year old today (May 5) with a history behind it. The movie is based on the severe 2018 Kerala floods that devastated the state, and at the same time, shows the grit and resilience of the people to help each other.



Directed by Jude Anthany Joseph, 2018 turned into a phenomenon at the box office not just in Kerala but also in the rest of the domestic market and overseas. It became only the third Malayalam movie to top 100 crores gross and the first to surpass 150 crores gross worldwide at that time.

2018 showed the potential of Mollywood Cinema at the box office. Mollywood is known for delivering high-quality content but now, it is also delivering at the box office while keeping the quality intact. Though Pulimurugan and Lucifer were huge successes back then, it was 2018 which opened the gate for Mollywood to conquer the box office.
