AEW Dynamite Results August 30, 2023: Highlights

Jon Moxley Vs Komander (w/Alex Abrahantes)

Moxley started things off by mowing down Komander with a big boot and then landing some corner strikes. He even took a moment to acknowledge the Chicago crowd with a bow. Komander fought back using his speed, sending Moxley to the floor and hitting a high crossbody. When they got back in the ring, Moxley did his signature big back rake in the corner, but a well-placed headbutt from Komander surprised Moxley and knocked him off balance. Komander attempted a move called Cancun Tornillo but ended up crashing and burning instead.

During the commercial break, Komander continued to rely on his speed, but Moxley was ready this time, countering a crossbody attempt and taking control for most of the break.

Komander managed to counter one of Moxley's powerbomb attempts into a facebuster, much like what Billy Kidman used to do. He followed it up with a series of lariats, and although Moxley initially absorbed them, the third one finally took him down. Komander then used well-aimed kicks and a low DDT to chop Moxley down. He pulled off an impressive lung blower that nearly ended the match, but Moxley kicked out at two.

Komander tried to pull off his signature rope walk 450 splash, but Moxley got his knees up just in time and followed up with a piledriver. Moxley then used his anvil-like elbows to soften up Komander and transitioned into a rear naked choke. Komander put up a fight, but Moxley smoothly shifted into an arm bar, forcing Komander to tap out.

WINNER: Jon Moxley

Chris Jericho & Sammy Guevara Face to Face

Jericho thanked the crowd for their great reaction and praised one of the best weekends he's had in his career, both as a wrestler and with his band Fozzy. He highlighted AEW's record-breaking attendance at Wembley and wanted to talk about his actions after a match. He called Sammy Guevara into the ring.

Jericho admitted he wasn't happy with how he shoved Guevara after losing to Will Ospreay. They showed a clip of Guevara hitting Ospreay with a bat while Jericho had him in the Walls of Jericho. Jericho recognized that Guevara did whatever it took, whether it was lying, cheating, or stealing, to help him win. Jericho and Guevara shook hands, and Guevara stated that their friendship couldn't be broken by a mere shove.

Jericho pondered what he could have done differently to win the match, suggesting that Guevara could have hit Ospreay with the bat harder. Guevara countered by questioning if Jericho had hit his finishing move, the Judas Effect, harder, he might have secured the victory. Guevara also mentioned that he left his pregnant wife to be there for Jericho, and if he hadn't had Jericho's back, he might have actually wrestled on the show.

Tensions escalated as Guevara brought up how Jericho had won the AEW title in that very arena only to lose it outside a steakhouse. Despite the tension, Jericho aimed for cooler heads and proposed that Le Sex Gods should go after the AEW Tag Team Titles. Guevara shook his hand, signaling that things weren't falling apart just yet, but they were close. The crowd was disappointed that the segment didn't lead to a brawl, as they were expecting some physicality.

Backstage, Jon Moxley was seen with Claudio Castagnoli and Wheeler Yuta, addressing the upcoming main event. Moxley expressed that it seemed like everything was about show, like who had the most titles, nicknames, or hashtags. However, he believed that at All Out, it would come down to who had the most substance.

Eddie Kingston vs. Wheeler Yuta for the NJPW Strong Openweight Title

Yuta gave Kingston a solid slap and immediately targeted Kingston's taped-up elbow, effectively grounding him. This dominance continued for a while, and around a minute into the match, they cut to a commercial break. During the break, Yuta maintained control. As the action resumed, Kingston countered a monkey flip attempt by Yuta, sending him crashing to the outside and then following up with a tope suicida. Once they were back in the ring, Kingston delivered a series of Kobashi-style machine gun chops, leading into an Exploder suplex. Yuta, however, blocked Kingston's back fist attempt, and impressively transitioned from a skin-the-cat move into a bridging German suplex for a near fall.

Kingston managed to get his knees up just in time to counter Yuta's diving move and quickly followed it up with a Saito suplex for a close two-count. Yuta then turned the tide by countering Kingston's half and half suplex attempt into an Angle Slam. Kingston showed signs of a comeback, unleashing a flurry of chops despite his injured arm. Yuta retaliated with anvil-like elbow strikes, but Kingston fired back with his half and half suplex followed by multiple back fists that caused Yuta to collapse and get pinned.

After the match, Claudio Castagnoli appeared at ringside, never making direct eye contact with Kingston. He assisted Yuta in making his way backstage without exchanging words with Kingston.

WINNER: Eddie Kingston

A video package recaps the main event of All In, featuring MJF successfully defending the AEW World Title against Adam Cole. Backstage, MJF expresses his frustration in a post-match interview, citing that Cole pushed him to wrestle harder than he has in a while. He reveals that Tony Khan informed him about a tag team battle royal scheduled for Rampage, which will decide the challengers for Cole and MJF's ROH Tag Team Titles at All Out. Additionally, MJF announces an upcoming tournament to determine his opponent for the AEW World Title match at Grand Slam on September 20th.

He humorously adds that he's taking a week off to go to Paris, enjoy a baguette, and spend time before returning to hit a Kangaroo Kick and execute a double clothesline with Cole to retain their titles. Renee Paquette conducts an interview backstage with Sammy Guevara, but their conversation is swiftly interrupted by Don Callis. Callis brings up the challenge of dealing with a personality like Chris Jericho's and tries to offer his congratulations to Guevara on his wife's pregnancy. However, Guevara cuts him off and curtly tells Callis to leave him alone.

Story Time with Adam Cole

Cole addresses the crowd, thanking them for what he considers the most significant night of his life and the greatest wrestling event ever. He acknowledges that despite the greatness of the night, it wasn't perfect due to his loss in the World Title match. He remains confident that he'll earn another shot at the title in the future and assures the audience that MJF will be ready for All Out despite his neck injury.

Unexpectedly, Roderick Strong and The Kingdom rush to the ring. Strong takes offense to Cole showing concern for MJF's neck while seemingly neglecting him. Cole expresses confusion about Strong's behavior and questions if it's influenced by his association with The Kingdom.

Mike Bennett interjects, initiating "Story Time with Mike Bennett." He reminisces about their shared debut in ROH and the path they've walked together. Cole initially pretends not to know The Kingdom, but Bennett reminds him of their shared history, including Cole's presence at Bennett's wedding. Bennett criticizes Cole for prioritizing the opinions of fans and failing to recognize the contributions of The Kingdom and Strong in his journey.

Matt Taven interrupts and accuses Cole of leveraging The Kingdom's efforts to elevate his career before joining Bullet Club for financial gain. Taven calls Cole a dishonest opportunist who has only looked out for himself. Cole apologizes if they feel that way but urges them to understand that MJF is not just his friend, but his best friend. Roderick Strong declares his intention to enter the Grand Slam tournament and achieve something Cole couldn't: beating MJF for the World Title.

Cole voices his disagreement, citing Strong's neck issues, but Strong is motivated by Cole's concern, feeling finally acknowledged. Strong asserts that he will win the tournament, break opponents' necks, and solidify his status as a wrestling legend. The Kingdom and Strong exit, with Tony Schiavone on commentary humorously suggesting that someone should call the "whambulance."

TBS Champion Kris Statlander, Dr. Britt Baker & Hikaru Shida Vs Nyla Rose, Marina Shafir & Emi Sakura

Sakura launched a quick attack on Shida at the outset, but Shida promptly turned things around and tagged in Baker. Baker swiftly executed a sling blade move. Shafir intervened to distract the referee, allowing Rose to land a sneaky shot on Baker, leaving her isolated and targeted as the action continued off-screen during a commercial break. Baker eventually found an opening and delivered a rolling neckbreaker, leading to a hot tag to Statlander, who currently holds the TBS Championship. Statlander unleashed her energy, taking control of the match until Rose and Sakura cooperated to execute a double team slam. Shida attempted to intervene, but Rose cleverly evaded a superkick from Baker, which accidentally struck Shida instead. Rose then hit a choke slam on Baker and aimed to do the same to Statlander.

However, Statlander resisted and managed to send Rose, along with everyone else, tumbling to the outside. Statlander seized the opportunity to climb to the top rope and launched an impressive crossbody on all her opponents. With the action back in the ring, Statlander reentered with Shafir, executing her finishing move, "Wednesday Night Fever," to secure the victory for her team.

WINNER: TBS Champion Kris Statlander, Dr. Britt Baker & Hikaru Shida

The Acclaimed & Billy Gunn’s Trios Title Celebration

In Max Caster's freestyle, he touched on Mitch McConnell's instability and even alluded to Trump's mugshot. Gunn mentioned time constraints and briefly discussed their Trios Titles victory at All In. Caster expressed that it would be fitting to return to Chicago, where the crowd played a pivotal role in their AEW Tag Titles win. They jokingly mentioned a ribbon-cutting ceremony, and Gunn took out large scissors to cut an imaginary ribbon, symbolizing the dawn of a new era for the Trios division. Bowens enthusiastically welcomed everyone to the House of Ass. As a surprise, Caster revealed the new Trios Titles, featuring scissor-shaped ends on the straps for a playful touch. Bowens announced that they would defend the titles on Collision this week. To conclude the segment, The Acclaimed and Gunn playfully demonstrated their unity by engaging in a mock scissoring motion with each other.

Orange Cassidy Vs Penta El Zero Miedo (w/Alex Abrahantes) for the AEW International Title

The match kicked off with a fast-paced opening sequence featuring roll-throughs, arm drags, and sweeps, leading to an early stalemate. Cassidy swiftly executed a takedown and showcased his signature pocket offense, sending Penta to the outside. Cassidy set up for a tope suicida, but Penta countered by catching him in a mid-air gorilla press and launching Cassidy into the railing as they headed into a commercial break.

Unfortunately, there was no picture-in-picture during the break. When they returned, Cassidy successfully connected with his tope suicida, but Penta quickly retaliated with a somersault plancha of his own. Back inside the ring, Penta performed a creative springing leg drop off the bottom rope. Cassidy displayed his agility, utilizing a Stundog Millionaire from the apron back into the ring, followed by his swinging DDT for a near fall. Penta managed to halt Cassidy's momentum in the ropes and landed a impactful backstabber, leading into another commercial break, this time with picture-in-picture.

Amidst their back-and-forth, both competitors exchanged thrust kicks. Penta executed a sling blade and another thrust kick for a two-count. Penta attempted to target Cassidy's bad arm, but Cassidy fought back and surprised everyone by slipping his hand into his pocket. Cassidy unleashed his unique offense, catching Penta off-guard and hitting back-to-back Destroyers. Cassidy tried for one more, but Penta countered with a thrust kick, and both wrestlers ended up on the mat.

Penta sought to execute his Fear Factor finisher, but Cassidy countered into a Beach Break, although he didn't fully connect. Penta blocked Cassidy's Orange Punch attempt and retreated to the apron. Penta landed a brutal Fear Factor on the edge of the ring, but Cassidy narrowly managed to get a rope break just in time. Penta viciously manipulated Cassidy's injured arm and delivered another devastating Fear Factor, yet Cassidy miraculously kicked out. Penta's disbelief led to a momentary hesitation, which allowed Cassidy to surprise him with a quick crucifix pin for the victory.

After the match, Cassidy grabbed the microphone and humbly stated that he's not one to talk much, especially since his body was in significant pain. Nonetheless, he emphasized the significance of defending the title and how it symbolizes AEW's ethos—empowering individuals who were once labeled as different or too skinny to become champions. Cassidy asserted his commitment to defending the title as long as he wishes, confidently stating that Moxley needs more than just a fork to defeat him. Cassidy, without a catchphrase, declared himself as Orange Cassidy. This prompted Jon Moxley to make his entrance, leading to an intense face-off with Cassidy to conclude the show.

WINNER: Orange Cassidy
