Indian Box Office In The First Half of 2022 Sees Highest Revenue In 5 Years

Mumbai, July 7 - The Indian box office is thriving to new heights in 2022 after being bettered by the covid-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021. The first half of 2022 has reached and even surpassed the pre-covid levels, thanks to the mega-blockbusters RRR, and KGF: Chapter 2 along with Vikram, among others. ## In the first half of 2022 (January - June), films in India have collected over Rs 5,550 crore at the box office, up from Rs 4,715 crore in 2018, according to Gautam Jain, partner, Ormax Media, a media consulting firm (via Money Control). ## According to Gautam Jain, the first six months of 2022 compared to pre-pandemic levels have been the highest ever, driven by the contribution from RRR and KGF 2. Indian box office collections in the first six months of 2019 had reached Rs 5,153 crore but dropped significantly in 2020 and 2021 due to the closure of cinemas. ## "Big-scale spectacles are getting audiences back to theatres. Also, franchises, especially big star-cast-led films, will become a necessity for filmmakers across languages. The creation of the universe of characters would take precedence over standalone films", Jain said, as per the report. ## Interestingly, nearly 35% of total domestic gross revenue has been generated by two films - RRR and KGF 2 - which grossed approx. 1910 crores combined. KGF 2 is currently the biggest Indian grosser of the year followed by RRR, and both the movies also helped in taking the contribution of films from the south to 50 percent of the overall revenue pie. ## According to Jain, in the first six months of 2022, the Hindi film industry recorded a share of 34 percent, Telugu 26 percent, and Tamil 16 percent. The top three industries in terms of box office contribution were followed by Kannada with 8 percent and Hollywood with 7 percent share. ## The Hindi language, even though has contributed 35% to total domestic revenue, it is still behind the 44% in the pre-pandemic year (2019), however, up from 27 percent in the two pandemic years put together (2020-21). There is also to be noted that 43% of the total Hindi collection is from the dubbed Hindi versions of South Indian films, mainly from RRR and KGF 2. ## It is understood that the second half of 2022 will belong to the Hindi film industry with films like Shamshera, Raksha Bandhan, Brahasmtra, Laal Singh Chaddha, Vikram Vedha, and Cirkus, among others. The South Industries will continue to thrive, however, the overall pace could be slow as compared to the first half. ## Stay tuned...

Indian Box Office To Reach Over 12000 Crores In 2022: Report

Mumbai, June 3 - The Indian box office is back on track and heading towards a blockbuster finish in 2022. After the turbulent two years, the box office in India has witnessed a significant rise in 2022 as the collection in the first 5 months has already crossed the 4000 crores gross mark in India.## According to Ormax Media, a media consulting firm, the box office in India has reached the pre-covid level and even further in 2022 so far. Interactive Television (iTV), an Indian cinema advertising company, a part of GroupM India, along with Ormax Media, unveiled the 'India Is Back... At The Theatres' report. ## In the first four months, the tentpole titles like "RRR", "KGF Chapter 2", "Vikram", "Beast", and "Bheemla Nayak", along with "Gangubai Kathiawadi", and "The Kashmir Files released which helped the box office to soar exponentially. According to the Ormax Media report, box office numbers reached a whopping INR 4,002 cr within Jan-April 2022, the best–ever performance post covid. ## It was also the first time that the monthly average box office stands at more than INR 1,000 crores. These milestones have been achieved despite the impact of the third wave and 18% of cinemas still being closed since 2019. The collection largely got a boost from "KGF Chapter 2" and "RRR" with both scored approx. 1000 cr and 900 cr, respectively. ## While the first five months have been excellent for the Indian exhibition sector, the rest of the year is looking even more promising. With films like "Samrat Prithviraj", "Laal Singh Chaddha", "Brahmastra", "Vikram Vedha", and "Ram Setu", among others to release going forward, Ormax Media has estimated that the box office in 2022 could reach 12515 crores, which will be the biggest for Indian cinema to date. ## Speaking on the report, Shailesh Kapoor, Founder and CEO, Ormax Media said, "Over the last two years, when cinemas were shut due to the pandemic, many analysts were quick to write an obituary of the theatrical medium. The first four months of 2022 have proven how far removed from reality that analysis was. The theatrical medium has not only bounced back but emerged as stronger than it has been in decades. 2022 will be the biggest box office year till date, and by a good margin too". ## It is to be noted that Hindi has contributed 38% to the total collection so far, and almost 60% of this share comes from Hindi dubbed versions of South Indian films, primarily K.G.F: Chapter 2 and RRR, as per Ormax report.## Stay tuned...

Theater Revenue Soars To Pre-Pandemic Level Despite Pricey Movie Tickets

Mumbai, May 28 - The Indian cinema biz went through a lot of challenges due to the covid-19 pandemic since the second quarter of 2020. The massive covid break out forced theaters to shut for nearly 1 and a half years which posed serious questions about theaters' existence. ## However, despite remaining shut for such a long time, the magic of big-screen remains unaffected as after opening their doors to viewers in the second half of 2021, theatres are back to the pre-pandemic level of collections this year. The tentpole titles of this year along with surprise blockbusters helped theaters' revenue to go up to the pre-pandemic level cinema owners are hoping that the momentum will continue throughout this year. ## "Last three months have been good for us. On average, we are clocking more than ₹1000-1500 crore every month", Inox Leisure's chief programming officer, Rajender Singh Jyala, said (via business insider) adding, "Movies RRR and Gangubai Kathiawadi pushed the recovery. Before that, Kashmir Files and now with Bhool Bhulaiya 2, our footfalls and domestic ticket sales are at pre-pandemic level or even better".## With such a highly positive trend as far as theater revenue is concerned, 2022 could turn out to be a golden year for the Indian cinema industry as Rajender Singh Jyala is optimistic that the upcoming movies such as Prithviraj, Brahmastra, and Lal Singh Chaddha, among others will set the ball rolling. ## Media consulting firm Ormax Media's Partner, Gautam Jain, said, "The overall domestic box office collections have crossed the ₹4000 crores gross mark from January to April. This is the highest gross box office collection for January to April since 2018. Given this growth trajectory and looking at the line-up of films slated to release this year, a gross box office collection of ₹12,000 crore looks possible, which would make this year the highest ever in terms of the gross box office [collection]". ## While the revenue of theaters has increased significantly, the overall footfalls remain average as compared to the pre-pandemic level. Explaining why the gross box office revenue is higher than 2019 while footfalls continue to be low, Jain said, "The gross box office collections are higher due to the ticket prices being higher by 15-30% across languages. The ticket prices have increased even in south markets".## Stay tuned...

Box Office: Saunkan Saunkne And Dharmaveer Second Weekend Collection

Mumbai, May 23 - Punjabi blockbuster "Saunkan Saunkne" has completed the second weekend at the box office with flying colors. The Ammy Virk, Sargun Mehta, and Nimrat Khaira-starrer movie had scored an excellent first week at the worldwide box office with Rs. 30.10 crores gross. ## Directed by Amarjit Singh Saron, the movie continued to be strong at the domestic box office and minted a very good Rs. 5.50 crores net in the second weekend. The weekend to weekend drop is just 43%, which is a phenomenal hold for a regional movie. At the overseas box office, it scored approx. 2.50 crores gross in the second weekend, taking the total worldwide collection to approx. 39 crores in just 10 days. ## "Saunkan Saunkne", produced by Naad Sstudios, JR Production House, and Dreamiyata, has also become the 6th highest-grossing Punjabi film of all time. The comedy-drama movie should be able to break into the top 5 as it might reach the 50 crores mark by the end of its run. Until now, only 4 Punjabi movies have reached the 50 crores gross mark at the worldwide box office, and "Saunkan Saunkne" could become the 5th on the list. ## While "Saunkan Saunkne" has had a record-breaking box office run so far, Marathi film "Dharmaveer" too is showing strong legs. It had minted Rs. 13.87 crores net in the opening week. The movie remained strong in the second weekend as well and scored Rs. 3.85 crores, pushing the total net collection to Rs. 17.72 crores.## Directed by Pravin Tarde, the movie follows a larger-than-life messiah for thousands, Anand Dighe aka Dharmaveer. Meanwhile, the Bengali drama movie, "Belashuru", starring Soumitra Chatterjee, Swatilekha Sengupta, and Rituparna Sengupta, has done well on the opening weekend and grossed approx. Rs. 1.70 crores. Amid Bollywood's Struggle, Regional Movies Bringing Audience Back To Theaters

Mumbai, May 14 - The Indian entertainment sector is witnessing a major change and no one was prepared for that. The largest and arguably the most influential Indian film industry, Bollywood is going through the worst phase of its history which is truly shocking to the fraternity. ## Bollywood, which has always been considered the heart of Indian cinema, has produced many blockbusters and path-breaking films over the years. However, ever since the covid-19 pandemic has broken out, Bollywood has been really struggling to find audiences in theaters. Apart from a few movies like Sooryavanshi, Gangubai Kathiawadi, and The Kashmir Files, almost all other Bollywood films have struggled at the box office over the last year. ## While the covid-19 pandemic has actually challenged and changed the entertainment consuming pattern of the audiences, this is, by no means, the sole reason behind Bollywood's downfall. Apart from the aforementioned box office hits, most of the other Bollywood films weren't appealing to the audiences that are now looking for a larger-than-life cinema. ## However, the struggle of Bollywood does not mean that other Indian regional film industries are going through the same. There was a time when regional films were finding it difficult to get success, but the time has changed since SS Rajamouli's Baahubali 2, and now, the movies of South, Marathi, and Gujrati are proving a boon to the Indian exhibition sector. ## Since January 2021, the South Indian movies have been running the whole show. While films from Telugu, Tamil, and Kannada, have broken the barrier of languages and found immense success in Hindi, there were films that couldn't make it to the Pan Indian audiences but still did wonders at the box office. Among those, Uppena, Jathi Ratnalu, Doctor, Love Story, Akhanda, Kurup, and others proved standout performers and brought the audiences back to theaters in large numbers. ## It's not only that South Indian movies are working well at the ticket window, the Marathi, Punjabi, Gujrati, and Bengali movies also seem to be at their peak post-pandemic. Over the last few months, Marathi films like Pawankhind, Sher Shivraj, Lochya Zaala Re, and the latest in theaters Dharmaveer, have really done well at the box office. The same can be said for Punjabi films like Honsla Rakh, Puada, Qismat 2, and Chal Mera Putt 3, among others, have struck gold. ## The downfall of Bollywood is a worrying sign for the Indian exhibition sector and there is an urgent need to relook at it. On the brighter side, Bollywood has been investing in some of the larger-than-life films, which used to be the biggest USP of Bollywood in the late 90s. On the other hand, the rise and rise of regional cinema have reignited hope and it should be seen as the brightest thing amid the glimpses of darkness. ## Stay tuned...
