Chennai, January 18 - Thalapathy Vijay's family entertainer Varisu has crossed 200 crores at the global box office, becoming the first Indian movie of 2023 to enter the box office club.## Directed by Vamshi Paidipally, "Varisu" has emerged as the first choice of the family audience on this Pongal festival. The film took just 7 days to reach the box office milestone, thanks to superlative performance domestically as well as overseas. ## "Varisu" has grossed approx. 210 crores, including approx. 140 crores in India in all languages and approx. 70 crores overseas. It has grossed around 115 crores in the original Tamil version and around 19 crores in Telugu (4 days) and approx. 6 crores in Hindi version (5 days). ## Produced by Dil Raju, the film has performed very well in Tamil Nadu so far, grossing around 89 crores (7 days). It is not too far ahead of "Thunivu" which has grossed approx. 84 crores in as many days in the home state. Chennai, January 16 - The first festival of 2023, Pongal/Sankranthi brings cheers to the Indian film industry. Four of the biggest South Indian stars, Thalapathy Vijay, Ajith Kumar, Chiranjeevi, and Nandamuri Balakrishna come together with their respective films and delivered them at the box office.## After a covid-19-hit Pongal/Sankranthi 2022, all the top films this year are having dream runs at the box office and getting rich dividends. After 2020, in which Telugu films "Sarileru Neekevvaru" and "Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo" grossed more than 100 crores each globally, all four big films in 2023 have been able to repeat that success and have already crossed 100 crores each.## Varisu - Thalapathy Vijay has once again proved why he is arguably the biggest crowd-puller South Indian superstar. Despite the mighty clash with Ajith Kumar-starrer film, "Varisu" has crossed the 200 crores gross mark at the global box office in just 7 days. Though it is lagging behind "Varisu" in the other parts of the country that couldn't stop it from racing past the 100 crores gross mark worldwide within the opening weekend. It has grossed approx. 147 crores, including approx. 102 domestically and 45 crores overseas in just 7 days. ## Waltair Veerayya - Megastar Chiranjeevi has had tough times at the box office in the recent past as his two films underperformed at the box office last year. However, the veteran superstar hits the bull's eye with Bobby's directorial film and has surpassed the 100 crores gross mark worldwide. The movie grossed approx. 137 crores worldwide, including approx. 117 crores domestically and 20 crores overseas in the 5 days. Chennai, January 15 - Thalapathy Vijay's family action drama Varisu is emerging as a favorite Tamil film this Pongal festival, not just in the original Tamil language but also in Telugu and Hindi languages. ## Directed by Vamshi Paidipally, "Varisu" grossed approx. 78 crores domestically in the first 4 days. The movie grossed an estimated 21+ crores on Sunday, including an estimated 13+ crores in the Tamil language, pushing the total domestic gross collection to around 100 crores in the 5-day opening weekend. ## The Telugu version of the film, "Varasudu" did well on the opening day with approx. 5.40 crores and scored another 5.50+ crores gross on its second day for approx. 11 crores gross in two days. The Hindi version is also surprisingly doing well and has grossed approx. 4+ crores gross in three days.## Meanwhile, another Pongal release, Ajith Kumar's Thunivu is too doing well by holding well after the big opening day. Chennai, January 14 - Thalapathy Vijay's family action drama film Varisu sees a big Saturday at the box office, added by the Telugu version "Varasudu" which released today. ## Directed by Vamshi Paidipally, "Varisu" scored an estimated 19+ crores gross on its 4th day/first Saturday. The Telugu version grossed an estimated approx. 4.50+ crores on the first day. "Varasudu" had a low advance booking for the opening day but surprised one and all with excellent spot booking.## The total domestic gross collection of "Varisu" now stands around 76 crores, including the Telugu version, after 4 days. The movie has crossed 50 crores gross in the home state, Tamil Nadu with today's collection, and worldwide it crossed 100 crores gross, becoming the first Indian film of 2023 to do so. ## Ajith Kumar's "Thunivu", which had a direct clash with "Varisu" is legging behind the Vijay-starrer despite putting up a good collection so far. Chennai, January 13 - The two Pongal releases, Thalapathy Vijay's Varisu and Ajith Kumar's Thunivu are having neck-to-neck competition at the box office with the former having a little advantage at the domestic box office after two days. ## Both films had a good hold on their second day despite dropping in the range of 50% each. The two days domestic gross collection for Thalapathy Vijay-starrer is approx. 45 crores while Ajith-fronted has grossed 42.50 crores.## "Varisu" witnessed another good hold on its 3rd day and scored an estimated 12 crores gross, dropping approx. 10%. The total domestic collection for the movie now stands at approx. 57 crores after 3 days with 2 big weekend days ahead of it. The movie is eyeing 85+ crores gross in the 5-day opening weekend. ## "Thunivu", on the other hand, sees a bigger drop of around 23% than "Varisu" on its 3rd day/first Friday for an estimated 10 crores gross. Chennai, January 12 - The two powerful forces of Tamil cinema, Thalapathy Vijay and Ajith Kumar collectively scored the day ever at the Tamil Nadu box office when their respective films, Varisu and Thunivu grossed 41+ crores on the opening day. ## The Ajith-starrer won the opening-day battle in the home state but it was "Varisu" that took the honors at the domestic box office a little over 31 crores against 28+ crores of "Thunivu". The word of mouth for both films is on the positive side and that helped both hold strong on the second day. ## As per the early estimates, "Varisu" grossed an estimated 18-20 crores on the second day, dropping around 40% which is lesser than the usual drop for a Tamil film. "Thunivu", on the other hand, has a drop in the similar range for an estimated 17-19 crores gross. ## The two days total domestic collection for "Varisu" is around 50 crores while "Thunivu" has minted approx. 45 crores gross (final second-day numbers may vary).## Both, "Varisu" and "Thunivu" are getting benefitted because of the Pongal holidays and this is expected to continue during throughout the opening weekend. Chennai, January 11 - The Pongal 2023 festival weekend kicks off on a blockbuster note, thanks to the two most anticipated Tamil tentpoles Thalapathy Vijay's Varisu and Ajith Kumar's Thunivu.## Telugu director Vamshi Paidipally directed "Varisu" while H. Vinoth helmed "Thunivu". Since both movies came on the same day, it was certain that no new box office record would be created but couldn't stop both films to bring combined joy to movie theaters and the makers. ## As per the early estimates, the combined opening day box office collection for "Varisu" and "Thunivu" is over 50 crores gross domestically. Thalapathy Vijay-starrer, as expected, is the biggest movie of the day but only just as Ajith-fronted comes really close to it. ## "Varisu" grossed an estimated 26-28 crores on the first day, and this includes an estimated 16-18 crores gross in the home state Tamil Nadu. Theatrical Business Details Of Pongal/Sankranthi Releases

Chennai, January 10 - Four of the biggest stars of the Southern Indian film industry, Thalapathy Vijay, Ajith Kumar, Chiranjeevi, and Nandamuri Balakrishna, will be competing at the box office to attract audience eyeballs during one of the most lucrative Pongal/Sankranthi festival frames. ## Thalapathy Vijay's Varisu, scheduled for January 11 release, is easily the biggest film this Pongal festival as far as the movie business is concerned. It will be up against Ajith Kumar's Thunivu at the Tamil box office and both the movies are having neck-to-neck numbers in the advance booking with "Varisu" marginally ahead at the moment. ## Directed by Vamshi Paidipally and produced by Dil Raju, "Varisu" will need to perform strong legs at the box office as the break-even target for this family action drama film is on the higher side as compared to the other movies. The break-even target for the movie is approx. 155 crores share, which means, it will need to gross around 280 crores at the global box office. ## The break-even target for "Varisu" seems too little higher given the fact that it will have to share screens with "Thunivu" which is also due on January 11 release. It will, however, fancy chances, thanks to Thalapathy Vijay who has a mighty impressive pull at the box office.## On the other hand, "Thunivu's" break-even target is close to 88 crores share or approx. 165 crores gross worldwide. Given how previous movies of Ajith Kumar have fared at the box office, "Thunivu" is in a comfortable position and is expected to be a profitable venture for the makers unless it meets a poor response from audiences. ## Coming to the Telugu films, the producer for both movies, Chiranjeevi and Ravi Teja's Waltair Veerayya and Balakrishna's Veera Simha Reddy is Mythri Movie Makers. The studio has done well to manage things and negotiate with theaters to find ways to give a proper release to both films. ## "Waltair Veerayya", directed by Bobby, has been valued at approx. 89 crores, similar to Chiranjeevi's last film "Godfather" which was an average affair at the box office. The trailer of the film met with a very good response from the audiences and the movie is expected to have a good run, at least, in the first few days. It is slated for January 13 release. ## Cult star Nandamuri Balakrishna leads Gopichand Malineni's action drama "Veera Simha Reddy", alongside Shruti Haasan and Duniya Vijay, which is due a Jan. 12 release. NBK is coming after delivering the biggest blockbuster of his career in the form of "Akhanda" and he will be looking to repeat the same with the upcoming movie.
