The upcoming 2023 Payback event is scheduled to take place during the Labor Day weekend, precisely on Saturday, September 2, 2023, it will be hosted at the PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This marks the first Payback since 2020 and the initial occurrence of a Saturday and September date.##
The livestreaming will be available on Peacock in the United States and Binge in Australia. This event also holds the distinction of being WWE's first PPV and livestreaming occurrence in Pittsburgh since Extreme Rules in July 2018, which also took place at the same arena. The event theme centers around wrestlers aiming to settle scores with their adversaries. ##

Steel Cage Match: Becky Lynch Vs. Trish Tratus ##
WWE is promoting a showdown between Trish Stratus and Becky Lynch at WWE Payback. ##
During WWE Raw on Monday, Trish Stratus and Becky Lynch duked it out but the bout ended in a double count out. The skirmish spilled from the ring into the stands and even reached the concessions area. Zoey Stark, who was not allowed at ringside, jumped into the fray and attacked Lynch at the merchandise table, giving Trish the upper hand. Following the match, WWE official Adam Pearce declared that Trish and Becky would settle their differences in a cage match. ##
For international audiences and on WWE Main Event, the upcoming cage match between Trish and Becky is being highlighted for WWE Payback. ##
Seth "Freakin" Rollins (c) vs. Shinsuke Nakamura: World Heavyweight Championship ##
In the August 7 Raw show, Seth "Freakin" Rollins agreed to join Shinsuke Nakamura's team for a six-man tag match that same night. Their team came out victorious, but things took a turn when Nakamura attacked Rollins with a Kinshasa during the celebration, showing a change in attitude. ##
In the following week, Nakamura declared his desire for the World Heavyweight Championship. This prompted Rollins to enter the ring and respond, stating that if Nakamura really wanted the championship, he was ready to defend it against Nakamura anytime. They shared a handshake, but Nakamura tricked everyone by acting like he was leaving, only to strike Rollins once again with a Kinshasa. On the next episode, it was announced that a title match between Rollins and Nakamura was set for the Payback event. ##
Rhea Ripley (c) vs. Raquel Rodriguez: Women's World Championship ##
During the June 19 Raw episode, Raquel Rodriguez voiced her worries about Women's World Champion Rhea Ripley's actions following her bout with Natalya. Around that time, Rodriguez paired up with Liv Morgan and clinched the WWE Women's Tag Team Championship. ##
Ripley continued her post-match assaults on Natalya, resulting in a clash on the July 17 episode where Ripley accidentally injured Rodriguez's left knee. This unfortunate incident led to Rodriguez and Morgan losing the Women's Tag Team Championship in a later match on the same night. Morgan retaliated against Ripley, but the plans for a non-title match between them the following week were derailed due to Ripley injuring Morgan's arm, preventing the match from occurring. ##
On the next episode, Rodriguez returned and got into a scuffle with Ripley, which sadly caused her to sustain another injury. Later that same night, WWE official Adam Pearce declared that Rodriguez hadn't been cleared by the medical team to compete. However, he assured everyone that once Rodriguez received medical clearance, she would be granted a match against Ripley. ##
Moving to the August 21 episode, Rodriguez initiated an attack on Ripley and announced her medical clearance. Pearce took this opportunity to disclose that he had arranged a Women's World Championship match between Rodriguez and Ripley for Payback. ##
WWE United States Championship Match: Rey Mysterio Vs. Austin Theory ##
At WWE Payback, Austin Theory is set to try and win back the United States Championship from Rey Mysterio. Initially, Santos Escobar from LWO was supposed to challenge Theory for the U.S. Title on the August 11 SmackDown show. But before the match, Theory took down Escobar, so WWE Official Adam Pearce ensured that the fans in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, would still see the title match they were promised. ##
Pearce replaced Escobar with Mysterio. Showing his determination, Mysterio used his signature move 619 and won the red, white, and blue title. This was the third time he achieved this in his long career. ##
An angry Theory didn't waste any time and quickly got back on track to compete for the championship. He defeated LA Knight the next week, becoming the No. 1 Contender for the United States Championship with a little assistance from The Miz. ##
Cody Rhodes to appear on “The Grayson Waller Effect” at WWE Payback ##
At WWE Payback, get ready for "The Grayson Waller Effect" as "The Aussie Icon" is all set to have a chat with "The American" Nightmare Cody Rhodes on his popular talk show. ##
Rhodes is Waller's guest after a series of tough fights against Brock Lesnar, which reached a high point with his victory at SummerSlam. However, Rhodes is still locked in a heated feud with The Judgment Day. ##
On the other hand, Waller has rapidly gained recognition since he came to SmackDown. He's been in the spotlight due to his interactions with WWE legends like John Cena and United States Champion Rey Mysterio. He even had a match against "The Rated-R Superstar" Edge at Madison Square Garden. ##
Singles Match: LA Knight vs. The Miz ##
LA Knight's rise is showing no signs of slowing down. ##
After emerging victorious in the Slim Jim Battle Royal at SummerSlam, Knight's momentum has been on the upswing. However, his growing popularity has rubbed one of WWE's seasoned Superstars, The Miz, the wrong way. The Miz was quite upset with Knight's rapid ascent and confronted the rising star on Raw, claiming that Knight had encroached on his photo shoot time. Despite The Miz explaining his displeasure, he ended up on the receiving end of a BFT from Knight, leaving him staring at the arena lights. ##
The rivalry between them escalated with cheap shots and interference in each other's matches. On SmackDown, Knight had a chance to become the No. 1 Contender for the United States Championship. Unfortunately, The A-Lister's involvement led to Knight's defeat against Austin Theory. ##
In the subsequent Raw, The Miz anticipated an easy win against Akira Tozawa. However, Knight played psychological games with him from ringside. The Miz's focus was disrupted, and he suffered an unexpected roll-up loss to Tozawa. This surprising turn of events left The Miz shocked and embarrassed. ##
Steel City Street Fight tag team match for the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championship: Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn (c) vs. The Judgment Day (Damian Priest and Finn Bálor) ##
WWE Payback will witness Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn defending their coveted championship belts. During the August 28 episode of WWE Raw, it was officially revealed that Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn are set to put their Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championship on the line against Finn Balor and Damian Priest, collectively known as The Judgment Day. This comes after Kevin Owens' return on the August 21 episode, following a previous attack from The Judgment Day that had left him sidelined. Over the past few months, Owens and Zayn have been embroiled in a feud with The Judgment Day, engaging in intense confrontations. ##
However, The Judgment Day has been grappling with their own internal discord in recent weeks. Balor and Priest, the latter also holding the Money in the Bank briefcase, have faced challenges in aligning their objectives. Despite their differences, they are gearing up to unite their efforts and contend for the championship titles on September 2. ##
Later in the same broadcast, Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn emphasized their determination to bring an end to their ongoing rivalry with The Judgment Day. In pursuit of this goal, they declared that the title match will unfold as a Pittsburgh Steel City Street Fight. ##
