Why Kirti Kulhari was hesitant to play mother onscreen

Mumbai, March 19 (IANS) Actress Kirti Kulhari was hesitant to take up the role of a single mother as she was afraid of being typecast. ## The actress is seen in the role of a single mother -- Anjana in Amazon Original Series "Four More Shots Please!". ## "After reading the script, I was skeptical about how will they position something that's palatable but at the same time make a bold statement? Another big concern for me was the fact that I had to play a mother. I wasn't ready for this and I had the fear of being typecast into that role, which has been quite prevalent in the industry," Kirti said. ## "I kept questioning whether I should take the plunge and play a role, which could probably change my image and affect the type of work or opportunity that could come my way. It was my husband who finally gave me the confidence to do this. He is solely responsible for reminding me that I am first and foremost an actor and I just have to push my own boundaries and be the change that I keep talking about," she added. ## After the success of the first season of the Amazon Original series, the second season of "Four More Shots Please!" will release in April. It will go live on April 17. ## The series also stars Sayani Gupta, Bani J. and Maanvi Gagroo, with Prateik Babbar, Lisa Ray, Milind Soman, Neil Bhooplalam, Simone Singh and Amrita Puri. The series is directed by Nupur Asthana and written by Devika Bhagat, with dialogues by Ishita Moitra. ## The second part will pick-up from the previous season's cliffhanger ending, bringing back stories of four unapologetically flawed ladies who live, love, blunder and discover what it really takes to build everlasting friendships in Mumbai. ## Produced by Pritish Nandy Communications Ltd, the show is created by Rangita Pritish Nandy. ## For more and the latest news about Bollywood, stay tuned to us.

Imtiaz Ali: 'She' reveals hidden aspects of society

Mumbai, March 19 (IANS) A lady constable poses as a prostitute to help the police nab a dreaded narcotics dealer. Will she succeed? Is she smart enough for the job? Her journey comprises Imtiaz Ali's latest creation, a web series titled "She". ## "'She' is about a female cop who becomes an undercover agent. She poses as a prostitute to aid the police investigate a certain criminal nexus. It is the journey of this woman as she goes through the experience of pretending to be a prostitute, how she deals with it and what happens to her and her sexuality. Through the series, we see many interesting and hidden aspects of society, of this city and of our own personalities," Imtiaz told IANS. ## The filmmaker, who has written the story, revealed his inspiration, saying: "I have met many lady constables. I met many prostitutes as well. I have also met women that are on different levels of this exploration. I have met a lot of women that have tried or are trying to get rid of the baggage of shame that they are suppressed by. 'She' is such a journey." ## We have always seen strong female protagonists in Imtiaz Ali's directorials like "Jab We Met" and "Highway". "She", too, boasts of a strong female protagonist, Bhumika Pardesi (played by Aaditi Pohankar). "The greatest happiness I have is that the series is called 'She'. Because it is all about the she of 'She', the femininity of a girl," he said. ## Describing the character, he added: "She is strong in many ways. One of them is the fact that she is a very 'pushable' character. She is not only gullible but you can sidetrack her. She is timid and quite okay to be ignored. That is where her strength lies. She starts from there and then she discovers what it is to actually impose and be powerful and feel the energy of a woman in her body." ## The filmmaker revealed he had written this story a while back but was unable to fit it into a movie format. With the OTT wave setting in, a web series was the obvious choice. ## "It is a much longer story. I've had this story for a long time but I could never really compromise and fit it to the duration and format of a film. Luckily, the digital revolution happened and we could make a digital series out of it. Because it takes duration to say this story," Imtiaz said. ## Vijay Varma plays the dreaded narcotics dealer Sasya, and Imtiaz is happy with the actor's performance. ## "We were very lucky to get him actually. He also spoke Hyderabadi (which the character speaks in the series) because he is from that region. That really helped. As an actor, he has really contributed to build what it (the show) has become. He has worked so well to build the character that it looks tailor-made for him," said Imtiaz. ## "She" is directed by Arif Ali and Avinash Das. The web series premieres on Netflix on March 20. ## For more and the latest news about Digital Media, stay tuned to us.

Freida Pinto: We were ridiculed for speaking so many languages

New Delhi, March 19 (IANS) Freida Pinto feels there was a time when the world ridiculed Indians for speaking so many languages and celebrating so many festivals. The actress says the world needs to imbibe the ethos of Indian culture in this "dark time". ## The actress is excited about her new animated show "Mira, Royal Detective", weaved around with the Indian culture and traditions. She feels people will be amazed to look at the myriad colours and diversity of India. ## "I think the first thing is that the world is going to be absolutely enthralled by the fact that there are so many languages and festivals that we celebrate," Freida told IANS in an interview. ## "We, in the past, have been ridiculed for speaking so many languages and celebrating so many festivals. Now, they are going to see the beauty of these and then realise what they are missing on. They will want to celebrate a few of them here in America and I think they rightfully should, similar to celebrating Christmas, Easter or any other festival," she added. ## The US-based Indian actress, who found fame with the Oscar winning "Slumdog Millionaire", continued: "I hope they celebrate Eid, Holi and Diwali and understand the significance of these festivals. All these festivals are tied to Mother Nature but also in good and evil, the same way all the other religious festivals are tied into. So, I think it will be a great learning and perception building as well. ## "Also, as a point of view of how much the Indian culture and tradition is weaved around family, friendship and togetherness. I think the world really needs it right now. We need this at this dark time," she added. ## Freida has carved out a niche of her own in world cinema through her roles in films like "Miral", "Day Of The Falcon", "Immortals", "Desert Dancer" and "Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes". Freida was also seen with Christian Bale in Terrence Malick's film "Knight Of Cups", which brought to light Hollywood's underbelly. Her work resume also includes projects "Guerrilla", "Yamasong: March of the Hollows", "Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle" and "Love Sonia". ## The actress feels that lack of awareness of Indian culture led to stereotypes. ## "There's this beautiful thing about the Indian culture that it's very welcoming but because of the lack of awareness of the culture over the years, it has been reduced to stereotypes. And this show (‘Mira, Royal Detective') shatters all of these. No one speaks in a particular accent; we all just keep our own, just to make it universally understood. This will make people seen and heard and not make them feel ridiculous while watching a show like this," she said. ## Set in the fictional land of Jalpur, "Mira, Royal Detective" follows the life of Mira, a commoner who is appointed to the role of royal detective by the queen. Freida has voiced the character of Queen Shanti who appoints a kind, empathetic, intelligent and confident little girl named Mira to be the Royal detective to her kingdom. ## "Playing Queen Shanti in ‘Mira, Royal Detective' is extremely special because firstly, I never grew up watching a show like this. The fact that the show now gets made with a whole South Asian cast, theme, songs along with clothing, language etc just means that we get to normalise the South Asian and Indian culture. We get other people to watch this and be a part of it as well. It's like we all are invited to this one big party at ‘Mira, Royal Detective'," she said. ## The series features an all-star cast of prominent South Asian actors including Jameela Jamil, Kal Penn, Freida, Hannah Simone, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Aasif Mandvi and Aparna Nancherla amongst others. It will also introduce 16-year-old newcomer Leela Ladnier as the voice of Mira. The show will premiere in the US on March 20 on Disney Channel. It will go on air on Disney Channel India on March 22. ## (Sugandha Rawal can be contacted at [email protected]) ## For more and the latest news about Hollywood, stay tuned to us.

Oprah would have never made it in the UK: Jameela Jamil

London, March 19 (IANS) English actress-model-television personality Jameela Jamil feels chat show empress Oprah Winfrey would have "never made it" if she gave the calling a shot in the United Kingdom, because of the lack of diversity in the country's showbiz scene. ## Jamil, 34, said this was also the reason she herself shifted to the United states, in order to pursue a career in television. ## "We're still behind in giving women important jobs that lead to long standing, dignified careers, the rest of us either get pushed out or get pushed into being nothing more than sex objects, whether we want that or not. I remember coming to America five years ago and seeing (black US broadcaster) Robin Roberts hosting 'Good Morning America' and knowing that Oprah is a really big deal (in the US). Oprah would never have made it in the UK," Jamil said, opening up in an interview with Playboy magazine. ## "I couldn't believe that I was seeing women in their fifties and sixties of different races on the biggest shows on US television. That was a big moment," she added, about her first impression of the American entertainment industry, according to a report in dailymail.co.uk. ## Jamil claimed she had to fly off to the US because had she stayed on in the UK, she would be sent to the "glue factory". ## She left London for Los Angeles after a breast cancer scare. According to Daily Mail, Jamil initially had no plans of acting or facing the camera. She intended to work as a screenwriter in Hollywood. ## Before trekking Hollywood, Jamil started off as the host of a popular "T4" at the age of 23, and went on to become the host of "The Official Chart" on BBC Radio 1. She also co-hosted "The Official Chart Update" with Scott Mills on the channel. Jamil would be the first solo female presenter of the BBC Radio 1 chart show. ## For more and the latest news about Hollywood, stay tuned to us.

I was given two songs ‘Mayya Mayya' and ‘Jiya Re', which were one of my favorites anyway. From there on I performed with sir multiple times for different events with his extraordinary team of musicians and artists, presenting a lifetime experience for the audiences. From Encore tour to Amabani weddings, quite recently, it was Pune as a part of '99 Songs'- movie's promotions. It has been and continues to be quite a blessed and thrilling ride."## Poorvi was also part of the singing reality TV show "Indian Idol 6".## For more and latest news about Bollywood, stay tuned with us.
