Box Office: 'PS-1' And 'Kantara' Opening Day Early Estimates

Chennai, September 30 - Maverick filmmaker Mani Ratnam's dream project, Ponniyin Selvan: Part 1 has taken a bombastic start at the domestic box office. ## The epic period action drama film, based on Kalki Krishnamurthy's 1955 novel of the same name, is touted to be the biggest film in Tamil cinema and has been one of the most anticipated movies of the year. The movie started on a fantastic note in the morning and it kept improving as the day progressed despite the mixed to positive reviews from critics.## "PS-1" was expected to take a big opening and it has managed to live up to those expectations as early estimates suggest 45-48 crores gross on an opening day for all languages. In Tamil Nadu, the movie scored an estimated 27 crores gross, which is the third highest in 2022 after Thalapathy Vijay's "Beast" and Ajith Kumar's "Valimai". The final number could be higher or lower, which remains to see.## On the other hand, the Kannada movie Kantara, fronted by Rishab Shetty, has taken a very good start at the box office. Produced by Hombale Films, "Kantara" has scored an estimated 4 crores gross on the first day despite the limited number of shows due to other releases. ## "Kantara" has been the best movie of the day along with "Vikram Vedha" as far as the critical acclaim is concerned. Written and directed by Rishab Shetty, "Kantara" started on a decent note but showed an incredible jump as the day progressed and as a result, the evening and night shows are going houseful. If the early indication has anything to go by, "Kantara" is on its way to becoming a word-of-mouth sensation. ## Stay tuned...

PS-1 Review: Moviegoers React To Mani Ratnam's Epic Period Action Drama Film

Chennai, September 30 - Maverick filmmaker Mani Ratnam's highly-anticipated epic period action film Ponniyin Selvan: I has been released in theaters today. Mounted on a big budget and scale, the movie is based on Kalki Krishnamurthy's 1955 novel of the same name. ## Produced by Madras Talkies and Lyca Productions, "PS-1" tells the story of the early life of Arulmozhivarman, who would become the great Chola emperor Rajaraja I (947–1014). The film stars an ensemble cast of Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Trisha, Aishwarya Lekshmi, and Sobhita Dhulipala among others. ## The movie has been receiving mostly positive responses from critics and the general audience. While the film is being praised for Mani Ratnam's direction and keeping the story true to the Novel along with solid performances by the primary cast and solid BGM by AR Rehman, it is getting criticism for lacking wow moments. ## Have a look at some of the reactions to the movie by movergeros - ## Damn! He's really done it. #ManiRatnam's #PonniyinSelvan1 is a spectacular adaptation that superbly captures the intrigue, thrills and page-turning quality of #Kalki's books. The start is shaky, but the entire second half is the master showing us all that he's still the boss.— Suganth (@msuganth) September 30, 2022 ## #PonniyinSelvan1 - a decent watch with good making, dop, bgm & songs.. slow narration.. no wow factors..!! fights could have been better..Performance wise all are good.. comparatively better 2nd half.. tail end is good..Not a great one, but not boring too.. Mixed feel..! #PS1— AB George (@AbGeorge_) September 30, 2022 ## #PS1 [4.5/5] : An Epic Screen Translation of #Kalki 's Great Novel..Story and screen play have enough twists and turns that are interesting and transport to Chola Great Dynasty..Only Dir #ManiRatnam could have done this..— Ramesh Bala (@rameshlaus) September 30, 2022 ## #AishwaryaRai for her mysterious beauty, @trishtrashers for her majestic characterisation and ethereal beauty, @realsarathkumar for his betrayal. Everything is so perfect so far. @arrahman and Ravi varman taken a bow. Kudos Mani Ratnam for adapting the epic novel coherently2/2— Rajasekar (@sekartweets) September 30, 2022 ## Performances by the lead cast is good especially Karthi and Vikram. Trisha is captivating with her screen presence. Mani Ratnam chose a story that had good potential but his narration is tedious at parts and should’ve focused more on the screenplay. VFX/Action is below par— Venky Reviews (@venkyreviews) September 30, 2022 ## #PonniyinSelvan Classy and engrossing. You can feel the #ManiRatnam touch in adaptation of #Kalki’s classic. Story telling at its best, palace intrigues & politics well etched and a stunning high seas climax. Ponniyin Selvan - Part 1 Opening Day Box Office Prediction

Chennai, September 29 - Filmmaker Mani Ratnam returns to the direction after 4 years with the magnum opus Ponniyin Selvan. The first part of this epic period action film is scheduled to release on September 30 in multiple languages, and needless to say, there is a huge curiosity among the audience to witness the cinematic adaptation of Kalki Krishnamurthy's legendary 1955 novel of the same name. ## "Ponniyin Selvan - Part 1" is one of the biggest films ever from Tamil cinema, in terms of budget and scale. Produced by Madras Talkies, and Lyca Productions, the film has reportedly been made on a budget of approx. 500 crores for both parts (the second part will release after 6-9 months of PS1). ## The advance booking of the movie has been excellent so far with over 12 crores for all languages, including approx. 10.50 crores in Tamil alone. Among the recent Tamil films, the advance sales are currently the 4th highest after "Beast", "Valimai", and "Vikram", but is expected to finish above "Vikram" by the time the first show begins. ## "PS-1" is looking to take one of the biggest openings ever in Tamil Nadu. Going by the advance booking trend, it is expected to start over 25 crores in the home state but the number could reach 30 crores if the talks are positive which is very much expected. At the all-India level, the minimum opening of 40 crores gross is something the makers will be hoping for. ## Tamil movies have always performed strongly in the international markets, especially in the countries like Singapore, UAE, and USA. "PS-1" is already heading towards the second biggest premiere for a Tamil movie in the USA. The advance booking for the premieres is nearly $1 million and it could finish at around $1.3 million. Comparing it with the recent top Tamil movies, "PS1" is likely to score approx. 20-25 crores overseas on an opening day. ## The film stars an ensemble cast of Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Trisha, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sobhita Dhulipala, Prabhu, R. Sarathkumar, Vikram Prabhu, Jayaram, Prakash Raj, Rahman, and R. Parthiban. The music is composed by A. R. Rahman, with cinematography handled by Ravi Varman, editing done by A. Sreekar Prasad, and production design by Thota Tharani. The film tells the story of the early days of Arulmozhivarman, who later became the renowned Chola emperor Rajaraja Chola I (947 CE – 1014 CE).## Stay tuned...

Naane Varuvean/Nene Vasthunna Review: Moviegoers Give Their Verdict On This Dhanush-Starrer

Chennai, September 29 - Tamil star Dhanush is back with another film quickly after delivering blockbuster Thiruchitrambalam, and it seems he has hit it out of the park again with Naane Varuvean. Directed by Selvaraghavan, the movie has been released in theaters today in Tamil and Telugu (Nene Vasthunna). ## Produced by Kalaipuli S. Thanu, "Naane Varuvean" has been one of the most anticipated Tamil movies of the year, and going by the critics and audience's reactions, the movie has lived up to the expectations. The genre of the movie has been kept tight lips but it is believed to be a psychological-horror action thriller film. ## It stars Dhanush and Selvaraghan in lead roles. Dhanush plays a dual role for the third time. This movie marks the reuniting of Selvaraghavan and Dhanush after "Mayakkam Enna". The film's music is composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja while cinematography is handled by Om Prakash and editing is done by Prasanna GK. ## Have a look at what moviegoers are saying about this film - ## #NaaneVaruvean - An Emotional Psychological Horror Thriller with One Man Show - @dhanushkraja . Karthi Reveals The Budget of The Sequel To His Smash Hit 'Kaithi' Will Be 10 Times Bigger

Chennai, September 25 - Director Lokesh Kangaraj's action thriller film Kaithi starring Karthi was a smash hit in Tamil and grossed over 100 crores at the worldwide box office. The movie is now getting ready for its sequel and this time, it will be bigger in scale and budget. ## Director Lokesh confirmed that he will start working on the Kaithi sequel after Thalapathy Vijay's upcoming film and in one of the recent interviews during Viruman promotions, Karthi confirmed that the sequel will go on floors by the second half of 2023. ## And now the actor, during Ponniyin Selvan 1 promotions, revealed that the scale and budget of the film will be 10 times bigger than the first part. While the official budget of the first part, which was released in 2019, wasn't revealed, it is believed to be approx. 25 crores, so the sequel could cost over 200 crores in the making. ## The sequel of Kaithi will focus on Dilli's (Karthi) backstory. "Dilli is a Kabbadi player and in jail, he won many cups by playing Kabaddi. In Kaithi, there is a bag with Dilli that contains a lot of cups he won from playing Kabaddi. I didn't explore this in the 1st part but in Kaithi 2 I will explore this background story", Lokesh had said previously. ## Kaithi 2 would take forward director's Lokesh Cinematic Universe (LCU), which began with its predecessor and the second film in it was Kamal Haasan's mega-blockbuster, Vikram, which was released earlier this year. Vikram sequel is also planned by Lokesh and this could feature Kamal Haasan, Karthi, and Suriya for the first time. ## Stay tuned...
