WWE Friday Night SmackDown, September 1, 2023 Play-By-Play Results
The John Cena segment
Cena made his entrance to a loud cheer and shouted, "Welcome to SmackDown!" The crowd started chanting "Cena!" Cena expressed his gratitude, saying that the fans have given him 20 years of great moments. He mentioned that it only gets better and promised to say "Thank you" every time he steps into the ring. Cena announced his return to WWE and talked about his upcoming matches in India and hosting Payback on Saturday. He pledged to give back to the fans and promised an epic SmackDown tonight. However, Jimmy Uso's music interrupted him.
The crowd responded with boos, and they kept chanting Cena's name while demanding to see Jey. Cena acknowledged the crowd's enthusiasm. Jimmy asked Cena why he was here and claimed that the crowd came to see him, a top star. He defended his actions against Jey, stating that he did it out of love for his brother. Jimmy argued that he didn't want Jey to be corrupted like Roman Reigns and John Cena.
Cena interrupted Jimmy and poked fun at his fashion sense. Jimmy retorted by saying that Cena and Roman were just alike, always taking from others. The crowd chanted "Cena!" Cena told Jimmy that he had something on his mind for three years: the wrong Uso quit. He added, "Take that." Jimmy tried to land a super-kick, but Cena countered with an Attitude Adjustment, and his music played to close the segment.
In the backstage interview, Kayla Braxton welcomed Austin Theory and Grayson Waller, who laughed about Cena hosting Payback. Theory bragged about his victory over Cena at WrestleMania. Then, we returned to the ring for the LWO entrance.
Grayson Waller & Austin Theory Vs Rey Mysterio & Santos Escobar
The match kicked off with Escobar and Waller in the ring. Mysterio quickly tagged in, and Theory attempted to attack, but both Theory and Waller ended up outside the ring. Escobar then tossed Mysterio over the top rope onto the heels. The action paused for a commercial break.
Upon returning from the break, Waller was in control, working over Mysterio inside the ring. Theory tagged in and continued the assault on Mysterio with punches and kicks until Waller took his turn. Theory held Mysterio, and Waller tried to hit him, but Mysterio dodged, causing Waller to inadvertently strike Theory. Waller then tagged out, and Mysterio managed to make the hot tag to Escobar.
Escobar entered the ring, executing a cross body on Waller for a near two-count. He followed up with a Frankensteiner from the top rope for another near fall. Theory and Mysterio both got back into the ring, and things got chaotic. Theory aimed for a chop block on Mysterio, but Escobar intervened, sacrificing himself to take the blow. Waller capitalized on the situation, running in and delivering the rolling stunner to Escobar, securing the victory.

Backstage, Adam Pearce was having a conversation with Michin when Jimmy Uso barged in. Pearce told Jimmy to leave, and Jimmy reluctantly complied. The focus then shifted back to the ring, and Bobby Lashley made his way to the entrance. The show took a commercial break.
Upon returning from the break, Michin was seen chatting with the rest of the O.C., and AJ Styles appeared visibly upset. The scene then shifted back to the ring.
The Bobby Lashley/Street Profits segment
The crowd was really excited for Lashley, and he expressed his gratitude to them. Lashley then addressed the ongoing situation between him and the Street Profits. He mentioned that he wants to give credit where it's due and praised the Street Profits. Lashley highlighted their charisma, athleticism, and aggressiveness. Before he could continue, Montez Ford interrupted him, stating they were there to show their appreciation to Lashley.
Ford added that the Street Profits find themselves pretty attractive. Dawkins chimed in, mentioning that Lashley helped them see the bigger picture. Ford clarified that it's nothing personal, it's just about making profits. Together, they both said "Thank you," directed towards Lashley.
Lashley explained that their presence was meant to convey a message to the WWE Universe. He declared that they are putting everyone on notice and are on a mission to attain power, control, and championship titles. Lashley emphasized that they're coming for everything.
Lashley's music played, bringing an end to the segment. However, the moment didn't last long as Kevin Owens made his entrance with the tag team belts. Following him, Sami Zayn entered the scene, passing by the Street Profits on their way to the ring
Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn Vs Cruz Del Toro & Juaquin Wilde
Sami and Wilde kicked things off, with Sami applying a wrist lock and then transitioning into a side headlock. Sami maintained the side headlock, eventually sending Wilde to the apron. Wilde responded with a shoulder tackle and a flip over Sami, followed by a back elbow and splash for a near fall. Sami attempted a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker, but Wilde managed to land on his feet. Sami recovered with a clothesline, and Kevin tagged in, climbing the ropes and delivering a swanton for a near fall.
Kevin tried for a pop-up powerbomb, but Wilde countered with a dropkick. Cruz entered the ring, delivering a running forearm in the corner, followed by jabs and a chop to Kevin. Kevin Irish whipped Cruz, who ended up on the apron and connected with a forearm and a kick to Kevin. Cruz attempted a springboard move, but Kevin evaded, causing Cruz to roll through. Kevin responded with a pop-up powerbomb, while Sami knocked Wilde off the apron. Sami then landed a Helluva Kick, allowing Kevin to tag back in and finish the match with a stunner for the three-count.
WINNERS: Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn
After the match, Sami grabs the mic and addresses "The Judgment Day," delivering a stern message. He warns them that tomorrow won't be a pleasant or pretty experience; it will be the fight of their lives.
Meanwhile, Jimmy Uso is on his way to leave the building when AJ Styles intercepts him. AJ makes it clear that nobody wants Jimmy around and advises him not to disrespect Mia. Tensions escalate, and they exchange shoves. Suddenly, Solo attacks AJ from behind and informs Jimmy that he's out of the Bloodline when they decide he's out.
Jimmy asserts that neither Roman, Paul, nor anyone else can dictate to him. He then leaves the scene as the show goes to commercial break.
We're back with a recap of the recent encounter involving Jimmy Uso, AJ Styles, and Solo Sikoa.
AJ is interviewed by Cathy, and she asks him about the recent incident.
AJ responds by saying that the Bloodline might think they control everything, but they don't. He's determined to handle the situation and expresses his desire to face Solo tonight, vowing to knock Solo's teeth down his throat.
Karl and Luke approach AJ and advise him not to worry about the Bloodline. They mention that Mia is supportive of AJ's intentions. AJ is determined to prove that this is the House that AJ Styles built.
Miz makes his way to the ring, and a video clip of Miz mocking LA Knight on Raw is shown.
Miz explains that LA Knight will be in the biggest match of his career tomorrow night, emphasizing that it's not Knight's fault but a fact. Miz believes that Knight is nowhere near his level, whether it's the Miz of today or the Miz of a decade ago.
LA Knight interrupts and heads to the ring.
Knight tells Miz that he wants to have a chat. He mentions the Miz's recent cosplay moments as The Rock, John Cena, and now LA Knight. He points out that these three individuals, along with not being able to fit into their clothes, are people Miz can never be. Knight shares his journey of rising from challenging circumstances, taking on dirty jobs, and cashing checks at payday loan companies. He asserts that Miz couldn't last a day in his shoes and claims to have surpassed Miz's level.
Miz argues that Knight has failed where he has succeeded, citing Knight's early elimination from a reality show. Miz boasts about his rapid ascent in the wrestling world, taking only three years compared to Knight's twenty.
Knight contends that Miz's success comes from seizing every opportunity, but he's not even the star of his own show. He mocks Miz for having his wife carry his belongings, suggesting that she'll be left empty inside when Miz returns as a broken husband. Knight warns Miz that one phone call can change things swiftly.
Miz remarks on the years Knight spent practicing promos in a run-down apartment, praising him for persevering despite losses. He argues that people are generally failures who settle for mediocrity. Miz sees Knight as an opponent who crushes the dreams of superstars. He describes himself as a human time traveler who will send Knight back to his apartment, cutting promos into a mirror as if it's 2003.
Knight responds by saying he never learned to quit because he doesn't know how. He advises Miz to move far away, as his present is trash and his future will only get worse. Knight predicts that at Payback, Miz will be extinguished, and he'll learn whose game it truly is.
Miz attempts a clothesline, but Knight avoids it and prepares to punch Miz. However, Miz strikes Knight's throat and delivers a Skull Crushing Finale.
Miz taunts Knight, claiming that it's his future. Knight chases Miz down the aisle and attacks him from behind. The show then shifts focus to the incident involving The Bayley Bunch and Bianca Belair.
Bayley (wiith Iyo Sky and Dakota Kai) Vs Shotzi
Bayley attempts to calm Shotzi down to prevent her from acting recklessly. Shotzi goes for Bayley's leg, but Bayley dodges her. Shotzi manages to avoid Bayley's attacks and traps Bayley's leg in the ropes, delivering punches. In response, Bayley slaps Shotzi, who smiles and responds with a couple of clotheslines and punches. She follows up with more punches.
Bayley executes an Irish whip, and Shotzi counters with a head scissors in the ropes. Bayley retaliates by kicking Shotzi in the knee and delivering forearm strikes. She proceeds to kick Shotzi in the corner and mocks Shotzi's hairstyle. Shotzi responds with an enzuigiri, then pulls Bayley to the floor and tosses her by the hair multiple times. She finishes this sequence with a cannonball off the apron before we head to a commercial break.
After returning from the break, Bayley applies a reverse chin lock. Shotzi fights back with elbows and a jawbreaker to break free. Bayley kicks Shotzi and lands an elbow drop to her back for a near fall. Bayley climbs the turnbuckles but misses an elbow drop as Shotzi gets her knees up. Shotzi retaliates with a round kick that knocks Bayley off the apron and follows up with a suicide dive.
Shotzi delivers a wraparound bulldog and continues with forearm strikes. Bayley attempts to put Shotzi on the turnbuckles when Shotzi goes for an Acid Drop. Bayley executes an elbow drop on Shotzi, who's in the tree of woe, but only secures a near fall. Bayley tries for a belly-to-belly suplex, but Shotzi counters with elbows and an overhead belly-to-belly suplex into the turnbuckles, followed by a cannonball.
Shotzi climbs the ropes, but Iyo distracts her. Bayley looks to capitalize and asks Iyo for the title belt, but Charlotte Flair's music hits. Charlotte kicks Iyo when she tries to hand Bayley the belt. Dakota also attempts to intervene, but the referee catches her. Charlotte punches Bayley, and Shotzi finishes the match with a DDT for the three-count.

Solo Sikoa Vs AJ Styles
As the bell rings, AJ immediately strikes Solo with a forearm and follows up with punches. Solo retaliates by sending AJ into the corner, but AJ counters with an elbow and chops. Solo charges with a running shoulder tackle, and then he delivers a headbutt followed by another. Solo attempts a diving headbutt, but AJ gets his knees up. AJ lands a kick and a knee drop, then goes for a slam, but Solo blocks it. Solo responds with an elbow and executes a slam of his own, finishing with a chop.
AJ kicks Solo and hits a Phenomenal Drop Kick. He proceeds with a clothesline in the corner. Just then, Paul Heyman makes his way to the ring, and Solo takes advantage by attacking AJ from behind.
Solo rolls to the outside as AJ drops down. AJ goes to the apron and delivers a sliding knee to Solo's head, followed by a slingshot forearm. Paul Heyman backs off, and we head to a commercial break.
Returning from the break, Solo Irish whips AJ, but AJ gets a knee up as he comes off the turnbuckles. AJ is sent ribs-first into the ring post by Solo. Solo then smashes AJ into the announce table several times. Solo proceeds with a belly-to-belly suplex, earning a near fall. AJ counters with punches, and Solo responds with a knee strike. Solo executes a back body drop and prepares for the Samoan Spike, but AJ stays on the mat.
AJ manages to land a kick and an enzuigiri, followed by a Pele kick. Both men are down. AJ goes for a dropkick to Solo's knee, followed by a sliding forearm. AJ proceeds with a clothesline in the corner, attempting to get Solo on his shoulders, but Solo stands up. AJ rises as well and delivers a series of strikes. Solo counters with a pop-up Samoan drop, securing a near fall.
Solo misses a running hip attack in the corner, and AJ responds with a clothesline and a quebrada for a near fall. AJ sets up for the Styles Clash, but Solo blocks it. Solo tries for an Alabama Slam, but AJ reaches the apron. AJ strikes Solo with a forearm while glancing at Paul Heyman. AJ then prepares for the Phenomenal Forearm, but Jimmy Uso intervenes and clips AJ's leg. Solo capitalizes with a Samoan Spike, getting the three-count victory.

Following the match, Jimmy shares a hug with his brother, Jey Uso. Solo appears ready to deliver a Samoan Spike, but Paul Heyman advises him against it. Solo exits the ring.
Jimmy remains in the ring and strikes AJ with a superkick. He climbs the top rope and lands a frog splash.
