In the SmackDown highlights on July 28, 2023, tensions escalated as Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns faced off with Jey Uso en route to SummerSlam's Tribal Combat. Uso boldly claimed he had beaten Reigns before and would do it again. Meanwhile, Santos Escobar won the United States Champion Invitational after Rey Mysterio suffered an injury.

LA Knight defeated Ashante "Thee" Adonis with Blunt Force Trauma, and Bianca Belair and Charlotte Flair teamed up to defeat Sonya Deville and Chelsea Green. Karrion Kross emerged victorious over Karl Anderson but unleashed his sadistic side after the match. The stage was set for intense battles at SummerSlam.

Here are the top 5 moments from WWE SmackDown on July 28, 2023:

1. Tense Confrontation Between Roman Reigns and Jey Uso

The Undisputed WWE Universal Champion, Roman Reigns, and Jey Uso had a face-to-face confrontation en route to Tribal Combat at SummerSlam.

In New Orleans, Jey declared himself as the Tribal Chief, but when Roman Reigns made his grand entrance with Paul Heyman and Solo Sikoa, he commanded the crowd's acknowledgement. Reigns reminded Jey that he elevated him to be his right-hand man and even credited himself for Jey's Main Event status. Jey denied wanting such power, though his shirt said otherwise. He accused Roman of breaking their family and vowed to take action.

Roman blamed Jey's jealousy for their rift, calling him selfish and predicting he'd end up alone. Roman taunted Jey, saying Solo respected him more. He speculated what would happen if Jey defeated him at SummerSlam, questioning his leadership. Jey defiantly claimed he's beaten Roman before and vowed to do it again. As the crowd chanted "Uso," they locked eyes in a tense stare down before Jey left the ring to end the segment.

2. Santos Escobar defeated Rey Mysterio to win the Unite States Champion Invitational Final

In the United States Champion Invitational Final, Santos Escobar emerged victorious over his mentor and fellow LWO member, Rey Mysterio. The match was stopped due to a Mysterio injury, and Escobar claimed the championship with his win.

Escobar dominated early, targeting Mysterio's leg, and later focused on his arm. Mysterio retaliated with a fierce slap after Escobar kicked his leg. Escobar showed resilience and rolled outside to avoid Mysterio's 619 setup. During the break, Mysterio executed a Senton on Escobar. As the show returned, Mysterio performed an arm-drag inside the ring and followed up with a successful Senton for a near fall. Escobar countered with leaping elbows and a leg-drop, nearly securing the win. Mysterio attempted a roll-up, but only got a two-count. Escobar caught Mysterio with a tilt-a-whirl back-breaker, and they both ended up outside the ring. Mysterio's head injury led to the match being called off, resulting in Escobar declared as the victor.

3. LA Knight Defeats Ashante "Thee" Adonis

The outspoken LA Knight went head-to-head against Hit Row's Ashante "Thee" Adonis. Knight showcased his skills and secured the win over his opponent with Blunt Force Trauma.

4. Bianca Belair and Charlotte Flair Unlikely Partners

In a non-title match, WWE Women's Champion Bianca Belair and Charlotte Flair teamed up to face WWE Women's Tag Team Champions Sonya Deville and Chelsea Green. Despite their differences, Belair and Flair managed to secure the victory, but not without some drama between them.

5. Jey Uso defeated Grayson Waller

Waller began with the upper hand, but Uso countered with a leaping elbow to fight back. Waller regained control, landing a boot to Uso's face. However, Uso quickly retaliated with a powerful kick to Waller's throat. Waller, not backing down, raked Uso's face and executed an enzigouri. During a moment of distraction caused by Roman Reigns' entrance, Waller capitalized with a knee to Uso's head before the final commercial break.

As the show returned, Waller maintained his advantage with a side head-lock on Uso. Jey fought his way out, and the two battled on the second rope. Waller connected with a right hand and an elbow but could only secure a two-count. Waller attempted a kick, but Uso evaded and tried to lift Waller, who countered with a spine-buster. Mocking The Rock's People's Elbow, Waller missed, allowing Uso to fight back with renewed energy.

Uso's hip attack missed as Waller moved, but Uso recovered and delivered a super-kick. In a defiant stare-down with Roman, Uso nailed Waller with a spear and followed up with an impressive Uso Splash for the victory.

Post-match, Solo Sikoa attacked Uso from behind, but Jey managed to dodge his move and retaliate with another super-kick. Roman entered the ring, and Jey speared him, standing his ground. However, Sikoa intervened, planting Uso and holding him as Roman speared him twice. Roman climbed the second rope and posed triumphantly as the show came to a close.
