Denver, September 15, 2023 - In this week's WWE SmackDown episode on September 15, 2023, there were five major highlights. The biggest surprise was the return of The Rock, a beloved favorite. He came back and, with some assistance from Pat McAfee, took down Austin Theory.
Another notable moment featured John Cena as the special guest on "The Grayson Waller Effect." Jimmy Uso and Solo Sikoa tried to attack Cena, but it was The Phenomenal One who came to his rescue.
Before that, Finn Bálor managed to defeat AJ Styles in a match. Let's check out the top 5 highlights of the night:
#1. The Rock Stuns With His WWE Return
One of the standout moments of the night, perhaps one of the best of the year, was when The Rock made his return to WWE on SmackDown. Pat McAfee, who was covering the Colorado Buffaloes in the Rockies, swung by Smackdown and gave a warm welcome to everyone. Austin Theory rudely barged in, declaring it's "Austin Theory Live," poking fun at Pat and the local fans, and boasting about himself.
Pat didn't hold back, firing back at Theory's disrespect and questioning his regard for the fans. Then, The Rock made a dramatic entrance, silencing Theory and emphasizing the significance of the people's support.
Theory interrupted once more, provoking The Rock. The Rock quoted Steve Austin and called Theory an A-hole, which got the crowd chanting. Theory got frustrated, denied being an A-hole, and swung a punch at The Rock, who countered and finished him off with a People's Elbow. Pat got in on the action, mimicking The Rock's move.
#2. John Cena and AJ Styles beat up Solo Siko And Jimmy Uso
In the main event, the Grayson Waller Effect took center stage with Grayson Waller and special guest John Cena. Waller was already in the ring when he introduced Cena. Waller stated that Cena had lost interest in wrestling. Cena removed his T-shirt, but before anything could happen, Jimmy Uso made an interruption and made his way to the ring. There was tension, but no fight broke out just yet. Solo and Paul also appeared, with Solo entering the ring to confront Cena.
Rather than targeting Cena, Solo unexpectedly directed his attack towards Jimmy Uso, delivering a Samoan Spike. However, he inadvertently struck John Cena with a superkick. This led to Jimmy launching an assault on Cena in the corner. Just then, AJ Styles' music played, and he rushed out to provide assistance. AJ began pummeling Jimmy, and Solo joined the fray from behind. A chaotic and brutal fight ensued.
Cena managed to punch Solo, sending him tumbling out of the ring. AJ landed punches on Jimmy, and Cena executed the Five Knuckle Shuffle. Cena attempted to deliver an Attitude Adjustment to Jimmy, but Solo intervened, pulling Cena out of the ring.
#3. LA Knight defeated The Miz
In a second showdown, LA Knight secured a clear victory against The Miz. LA Knight, known for his outspoken nature, won by hitting The Miz with a BFT. After the match, Knight talked on the mic and said he's aiming to win championship gold.
#4. Asuka defeated Bayley
Another notable match of the night featured Asuka, who secured the victory with some assistance from Shotzi. Shotzi made her presence felt during the match while Bayley was attacking Asuka near the barricades. She appeared and diverted Bayley's attention, enabling Asuka to execute a backslide for the win.
As a result of this victory, Asuka gains momentum as she prepares to face IYO SKY for the WWE Women's Championship on next week's SmackDown.
#5. Rey Mysterio agreed to grant The LWO's Santos Escobar a United States Title opportunity.
Rey Mysterio had accepted Santos Escobar's request for a United States Title shot, but before they could discuss it further, Bobby Lashley and The Street Profits interrupted them.
