Eddie Kingston Loses AEW Continental Title, Tony Khan Clarifies Championship Future

Eddie Kingston may have lost the AEW Continental Championship to Kazuchika Okada on AEW Dynamite, but the title itself isn't going anywhere. AEW president Tony Khan has shed light on the future of the championship and how it will be defended moving forward.

Following Kingston's reign, which included a successful defense of the "Continental Crown" uniting the AEW Continental, ROH World, and NJPW STRONG Openweight Championships, Khan has outlined a new direction for the AEW title. Wrestlers vying for the championship will compete under a specific rule set for the remainder of the year.



These "Continental Rules" will prohibit outside interference and exclude anyone from ringside during matches. The champion coming out of the upcoming Full Gear pay-per-view will be required to defend the title in the Continental Classic tournament. Worlds End will then determine the next champion.

The unique "Continental Crown" concept, where Kingston defended multiple titles simultaneously, appears to be a one-time occurrence. Khan clarifies that this aspect was specific to Kingston's championship holdings leading into the 2023 Continental Classic.

While Kingston dropped the AEW Continental Championship, he remains the ROH World Champion. He'll put that title on the line against Mark Briscoe at the ROH Supercard of Honor event taking place on April 5th in Philadelphia.
