'Shazam' Star Zachary Levi Slams DC's Toxic Fandom

Los Angeles, March 21 - Shazam! Fury of the Gods star Zachary Levi has slammed DC fandom for spreading unnecessary hate and negativity for DCEU films. ## As the SnyderVerse era is nearing its end before a new DCU will begin in earnest with Superman: Legacy under James Gunn, these changing dynamics are not going well with the passionate DC fans who are rejecting anything that is not connected to Zack Snyder's vision for DCEU.## It all began with Snyder's Cut of Justice League, which wasn't the result of organic filmmaking but extreme fan movement. Later, Warner Bros. reportedly accepted that surrendering to the fan movement was a major mistake the studio did and things went from bad to worse which forced the studio to start from the beginning. ## In the earlier, interview, Levi explained why SnyderVerse didn't prove to be good for DC as it failed to tap into a larger audience when compared to the MCU. Now, in a new interview with Josh Horowitz's The Happy Sad Confused podcast (via The Direct), Levi called out DC fandom for continuously being negative. ## "It's very very difficult. It's very difficult, but, you know, listen, I did my best, I have to accept that, I know that I did my best, and all the other stuff is out of your hands. But yeah I mean even on Twitter today, scrolling through, there's people that have released some advanced reviews, or just you know fans who have seen it, and there's this incredibly positive stuff out there. And then, of course, there's these other people, like the internet is full of, which is a very just negative to be negative people", he said.## The actor pointed out to one particular group of fans, and said, "There's a whole contingent of comic book fans that it's really unfortunate that there's this one particular group of people that think I... well, they don't like me because I don't agree with them on other comic book movies. You know who I'm talking about". ## "But instead of there being a conversation, they take up so many of my words, or things completely out of context, and then they go stir up all the other people that they know online, and they all just want to attack, and attack, and attack, and attack. And it's really sad because this is just one example of so many examples of the amount of just venom, toxicity, and bullying that goes on in these cyber dimensions", he added.## The actor's latest superhero flick, "Shazam! Fury of The Gods", directed by David F. Sandberg, opened at approx. $65 million worldwide, which is much lower than the projection. Los Angeles, March 19 - DC Studios' latest superhero movie, Shazam Fury Of The Gods fails to fly high at the domestic (North America) as well as the overseas box office and fell short of the expectations. ## The sequel to the successful 2019's film opened at number 1 on the domestic opening weekend with $30.5 million, according to Variety. It was, however, projected to start with around $40 million, which was still lower than the opening of its predecessor which debuted with $53.50 million. ## Not only just domestically, but the Shazam sequel also opened lower than expected internationally, grossing $35 million from 77 markets for a global start of $65.5 million. It was projected for, at least, an $80+ million worldwide launch. ## The buzz for Shazam 2 was already low and the critics' reviews too were against it which made the job tougher for it. It landed a B+ CinemaScore, down from the first film's A grade. And it holds 53% on Rotten Tomatoes, an epic decline from the original's 90% average. ## Among the overseas markets of Shazam 2, China leads with a $4.4 million opening weekend, followed by Mexico with $4 million and the UK with $3 million. Los Angeles, March 15 - DC's next superhero flick, Shazam! Fury Of The Gods finally is hitting theaters this Friday after multiple delays due to the covid-19 pandemic. ## Directed by David F. Sandberg, the sequel to Shazam! (2019) will be released in 77 international markets along with domestic this weekend. At the domestic (North America) box office, Shazam 2 will be released at approx. 4300 theaters, and as per the Deadline, it could open between $35 million - $40 million on the opening weekend. ## Internationally, Fury of the Gods will start rolling out from Wednesday to Friday and it is projected to be a $45 million - $50 million offshore start. Overall, the sequel is tracking an $80+ million worldwide opening ($80M - $85M), which is lower than the 2019 original ($53.5M domestic, $102M WW).## Shazam 2, however, might surprise at the North American box office, much like Creed III and Scream VI, which blew away the box office projections with openings of $58.3 million and $44.4 million, respectively over the last two weekends. ## Starring Zachary Levi in the titular role, Fury Of The Gods shows Billy Batson and his foster siblings, who transform into superheroes by saying "Shazam!", forced to get back into action and fight the Daughters of Atlas. Pictures is once again pushing back the release dates of its most-awaited sequels to Aquaman and Shazam! in another major development at the studio within a month. ## Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, the highly-anticipated superhero sequel, directed by James Wan, has been pushed to Chrismas 2023 from March 17, 2023. The new release date is exactly one year later than the original release date of "Aquaman 2" in 2022. ## The sequel to a $1+ billion grosser movie will see the return of Jason Momoa as the titular superhero, as well as Patrick Wilson's Orm Marius and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II's Black Manta. Mumbai, March 10 - Warner Bros. is moving the release dates of its upcoming DC Comics movies again due to the covid-related delays. Most of these movies are said to be heavy on VFX which is taking longer than expected times in post-production during Covid. ## According to Deadline, Dwayne Johnson-led "Black Adam", which was supposed to release on July 29, will now hit theaters after nearly 4 months on October 21, 2022. The animated superhero movie, "DC League of Super-Pets", in which Johnson has voiced Krypto the Superdog, moves from May 20 to July 29. ## Ezra Miller-fronted "The Flash", which alone has 2,500 VFX shots, is moving to June 23, 2023, from November 4, this year. It is one of DCs most-anticipated films that also marks Michael Keaton's return as Batman after nearly 30 years. He will also be seen as Batman in "Batgirl", due to the premiere on HBO Max in 2022. ## Among some other high-profile postponements, Jason Momoa-led highly awaited "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom" also moves to 2023. It was slated for December 16, 2022, release but now will debut in theaters on March 17. Meanwhile, "Shazam! Fury of the Gods" moves up and will take "Aquaman 2's" slot. Los Angeles, December 18 - A sequel to DC's 2019 hit, Shazam!, is currently under development, titled, Shazam! Fury Of The Gods, for 2023 release. It is one of the most exciting upcoming films within the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), which includes films like The Batman, Black Adam, The Flash, and Aquaman: The Lost Kingdom, scheduled to hit theaters in 2022. ## "Shazam", meanwhile, is considered as one of the best and most beloved films within DCEU, and one of the reasons for that is the last shot of the film, where Billy powers up and joins Freddy for lunch as promised, however, he ends up bringing along a friend, Superman, who wasn't actually Henry Cavill suited up. ## It was earlier reported that the Shazam sequel would feature a trio of villainous sisters as adversaries to the titular hero. Then it was revealed that Helen Mirren will be playing the oldest sister, Hespera daughter of Atlas, along with Lucy Liu, and Rachel Zegler. Fury Of The Gods makes sense. It looks like Shazam and the Shazam Fam will be taking on three daughters of Atlas, which could have some connection to Shazam possessing the stamina of Atlas.
