Bengaluru, Dec 30 (IANS) The Kannada film industry, following in the footsteps of Tollywood, is all set to leave its mark on the pan-India market in the upcoming year. ## Kannada films were once known for being mainly arthouse productions and festival circuit favourites, but with the commercial success of the action drama 'KGF-1', Sandalwood can claim to have arrived on the national screen. The industry is looking up to the sequel, 'KGF-2', which is slated to be released in July next year, to give it the boost it is so looking forward to. ## After enjoying an exalted reputation for quite some time in the second half of the 1900s, when directors such as G.V. Iyer, M.S. Sathyu, Girish Karnad, B.V. Karanth and Girish Kasaravalli made headline news, the Kannada film industry has lived with the ignominy of being dubbed as the inferior cousin of Tollywood (Telugu), Kollywood (Tamil) and Mollywood (Malayalam) in terms of budgets, market penetration and content. ## But it has been given a new lease of life by the rise of a pan-India superstar in the form of the 'KGF-1' star, Yash. The actor has also spoken about the Kannada film industry on various platforms and how he took it upon himself as a challenge to prove that it's on a par with other language film industries. ## In the year going by, the Kannada film industry received a jolt when its superstar Puneeth Rajkumar met with a sudden death on October 29. With the entire state in a state of mourning over the loss of a beloved star, the producers of the big-budget movie 'Bajarangi' had to suffer huge financial setbacks. ## The industry, however, managed to get the box office cash registers ringing again as large crowds welcomed 'Kotigobba-3' and 'Salaga'. Later, 'Garuda Gamana Vrushaba Vahana', 'Madagaja', 'Badava Rascal' and 'Rider' also managed to put up a good show at the box office and drew huge crowds despite the Omicron variant fears. ## The much-anticipated events in the coming year will be the posthumous release of the Puneeth Rajkumar-starrer documentary 'Gandhada Gudi', directed by the popular wildlife documentary filmmaker J.S. Amoghavarsha, and the commercial movie 'James' directed by Chetan Kumar. 'Gandhada Gudi', meanwhile, is expected to make a mark at the national level. ## The producers and actors are now focusing more on pan-India presentations and expanding the canvas of their movies. After 'KGF-2', the Kichcha Sudeep-starrer 'Vikranth Rona' is slated to be a pan-India movie. This Anup Bhandari directorial is said to be one of the biggest releases of the Kannada film industry in the upcoming year. ## Super Star Upendra, who's popular in Tollywood, is ready to make a grand entry on the national scene with 'Kabja', which is being produced in five languages, including Hindi. 'Home Minister', 'Trishulam' and 'Lagaam' are Upendra's other big movies which will be released in 2022. ## 'Banaras', starring Zaid Khan and Sonal Monteiro, has also been made on a huge canvas. The film is being released in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam. The movie is directed by Jayatheertha. ## Rakshith Shetty, known for his experiments, is rolling out '777 Charlie', which is about the journey of a dog named Charlie. The movie is to be released in Hindi, Malayalam, Telugu and Tamil. Shetty's 'Sapta Sagaradache Yello' has also generated a lot of curiosity and is most likely to make a mark nationally. ## Director Prem is ready with his new experiment with newcomers 'Ek Love Ya' and Rishab Shetty is all set to rock with 'Bell Bottom 2'. Super Star Darshan is quietly busy with 'Kranthi'. After the success of the Telugu version of 'Robert', the actor is expected to expand the footprint of the Kannada film industry. ## Dhruv Sarja's 'Martin', Abhishek Ambareesh's 'Bad Manners', Niranjan's 'Super Star', Dr Shivarajkumar's 'Veda', Srimurali's 'Bagheera' and Darling Krishna's 'Love Mocktail 2' are the most eagerly awaited movies of Kannada cinema in 2022. ## Speaking to IANS, Umesh Banakar, a film producer and actor, stated that there is a steady increase in the number of pan-India projects led by the Kannada film industry. "There is still scope for content-oriented films," he stated, pointing out that the number of cinema theatres in Karnataka has come down to 650 to 675 from 1,700. "I owned three theatres. I had to close them down. It is difficult to compete with multiplexes and after digitization theatres are struggling," Banakar said. ## Ba. Ma. Harish, former secretary of the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce, explained that even after the return of Covid-19, the Kannada film industry is abuzz. 'KGF-2' and 'Vikrant Rona' are all set for pan-India rollouts and even newcomers are taking up big projects. The Kannada film industry will soon be on a par, Harish said, with its Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam counterparts. ## Kannada movies are also making their presence felt on OTT platforms. Dhananjay's 'Ratnan Prapancha' was the first big Kannada release on OTT and it managed to get a good response. 'Love Mocktail', 'Diya', 'Ikkat', 'French Biryani' are the movies that became popular on OTT. ##

Bengaluru, Dec 23 (IANS) The trailer of Kannada actor Danish Sait's web series 'Humble Politician Nograj' is out. Helmed by Saad Khan, the series features Danish Sait, Varun Thakur, Prakash Belawadi, Vinay Chendoor and Disha Madan. ## Saad Khan, who directed Kannada film 'Humble Politician Nograj' in 2018, is now coming up with a series of the same name. The film features Danish Sait in the lead role, portraying the titular character of Nograj. ## In the trailer of the web series, Danish can be seen reprising his role as Nograj. The story revolves around corrupt politician Nograj and his journey from being an MLA to becoming the Chief Minister of Karnataka. ## Director Saad Khan said: "I love observing people, their mannerisms and quirks - obviously in a tactful manner. Real life experiences always help in crafting a character or a story. So while writing our show, the world and the other zany characters around Nograj, I was able to draw from my own observational experiences and add comical traits of all the fascinating people I have met into our narrative. The way Danish embodies Nograj and seeing him perform gave me a canvas to work with and that really helped envision everything else." ## He further shares on the challenges of dealing with comedy as a genre and how Danish is the perfect choice for essaying the character of Nograj. "As a director, comedy is not an easy genre to tackle, but Danish and I have worked together for over 8 years now, and we laugh at the same things, almost always. When we work on a scene, instantly we both know whether it works or not. For me Danish is synonymous with humour, and nobody can ace Nograj better than him," he adds. ## Danish opens up about his character, Nograj in the series and says: , "The character, Nograj has a hysterically funny personality with optimistic ambitions. To get into his shoes required a lot of preparation. I had to think and feel like a 'scamster', and to keep the infectious energy consistent. There are some characters that influence your personality and Nograj did that for me in a good way. Though, at times, I do wonder, what will happen to the nation if we actually have people like him." ## Kannada web series 'Humble Politician Nograj' will be streaming from January 6 on Voot Select.

Bangalore, October 23 - First time since Darshan's "Roberrt" and Puneeth Rajkumar-led "Yuvarathnaa", the Kannada Film Industry is having a sigh of relief. It has been a hard time for the South Indian film industry because of the covid-19 pandemic, but now, it is looking for revival, all thanks to the much-needed boost from the recently released Kotigobba 3 and Salaga. ## The long-awaited Kichcha Sudeepa starrer "Kotigobba 3" might have faced financial issues before its release on October 15, it has brought joy to the industry with a solid box office response. With strong Rs. 27 crores India gross at the box office in the first 8 days, the Shiva Karthik-directed has become one of the top grossers after the second covid-19 wave India. ## On the other hand, Duniya Vijay-fronted and directed "Salaga", which opened a day earlier on October 14, is doing well at the Karnataka box office. So far, the crime thriller has grossed approx Rs. 17.50 crores in the first 9-days and have been declared hit at the box office. It also stars Dhananjay, Nagabhushan, and Sanjana Anand in key roles. ## Two big Kannada films running to packed houses across Karnataka are good news for theatre owners, many of whom were on the verge of closing down because of the pandemic and no big-ticket fresh releases. "Both films enjoying full occupancy at 90 percent of all centers for five days is a big development", says K V Chandrashekar, chairman of Kannada Exhibitors Association.## In the pandemic-hit year, Darshan starrer actioner "Roberrt" remains the highest-grossing Kannada film. It was released on 11 March and grossed over Rs. 69 crores worldwide and was declared super hit at the box office. Dhruva Sarja, and Rashmika Mandanna's "Pogaru" remain the second-highest Kannada film of 2021 with Rs. 45.10 crores worldwide while Puneeth Rajkumar and Sayyeshaa Saigal's "Yuvarathnaa" is at number 3 with Rs. 38.70 crores worldwide gross in 15 days. It was made available on Amazon Prime Video only after 9 days of theatrical release. ## Among the upcoming Kannada films, the industry has high hopes for Dr. Shivarajkumar's "Bhajarangi 2", which opens on October 29. The fantasy action film got a homogenous response for the trailer which promises a visual extravaganza film to watch on the big screen. Bengaluru, June 14, 2021: National Award-winning Kannada Actor, Sanchari Vijay, has been died after an accident. The actor met with an accident while he was returning home from his friend's place on June 12. He was moved to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Apollo Hospital in Bengaluru, where he was declared brain dead today on June 14. ## Sanchari's family has decided to donate his organs in light of the irreversible brain damage. A statement from Apollo Hospital in Bengaluru said, "Neurologically he is deeply unconscious and is showing signs of brain failure. The family had come forward and consented to organ donation keeping in view the current irreversible brain damage. We will follow the guidelines as per organ donation protocol". ## Sanchari Vijay made his debut with the film Rangappa Hogbitna in 2011. He has appeared in a slew of Kannada films including Dasavala, Harivu, Oggarane, Killing Veerappan, Varthamana, and Sipaayi among others. The actor won the National Award for his role as a transgender in his 2015 movie, Naanu Avanalla Avalu. ## Kannada superstar, Kichcha Sudeep took to Twitter and announced the news of Sanchari Vijay and paid tribute to the young actor who gone too soon.
