Chennai, July 17 - It has been a so-so year for Tamil cinema with a mixed bag of success, and the eyes are now on superstar Rajinikanth's gangster action drama film Coolie, which debuts in theatres worldwide on August 14, ahead of Independence Day, in multiple Indian languages. ## The highly anticipated film, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, is the sole hope for Tamil cinema to score a big blockbuster this year. Touted as one of the most ambitious projects in Kollywood, Coolie is already being viewed as the industry's biggest shot at entering the elite 1000 crore club — a feat only a handful of Indian films have managed to achieve. ## What Makes Coolie A Potential 1000 Crore Grosser? ## What makes Coolie stand out is not just the star power of Rajinikanth but his collaboration with Lokesh, the director behind Tamil blockbusters like Kaithi, Master, Vikram, and Leo. This marks their first-ever collaboration, and the anticipation around the film is huge across India and overseas among the Indian diaspora. ## Apart from Rajinikanth and Lokesh, who obviously have complete command over the Tamil market in India and overseas, the movie also features stars like Nagarjuna, Aamir Khan (cameo), and Upendra. While the film enjoys a good buzz due to the blockbuster collaborations, it faces a significant roadblock: a direct box office clash with Yash Raj Films' War 2 — a high-octane spy thriller starring Hrithik Roshan and Jr. NTR. ## Though Coolie does have an edge with Aamir Khan's cameo presence, which could potentially boost its appeal in the Hindi belt, it is still unlikely to challenge War 2 in the North Indian and metro multiplex circuits, at least in the opening stages. And that's a critical factor. ## The highest-grossing non-Bollywood Indian film to date is SS Rajamouli's Baahubali 2, which amassed a staggering 1788 crore worldwide, with its Hindi version alone contributing approximately 800 crore. Similarly, Pushpa 2 — the third biggest Indian grosser with around 1750 crore globally — crossed the 1000 crore mark from its Hindi version alone, an exceptional feat. ## The trend continued with RRR (1230 crore worldwide), KGF Chapter 2 (1215 crore), and Kalki 2898 AD (1042 crore) — all of which heavily benefited from strong box office performance in the Hindi-speaking belt. These cases clearly show how critical the Hindi market has been for South Indian films in reaching the 1000 crore milestone. ## Coolie probably lacks this advantage, especially when it is directly clashing with an equally hugely anticipated Bollywood movie, War 2. Whether Coolie can overcome this challenge and leave a mark in the Hindi belt remains to be seen. But one thing is certain — to enter the 1000 crore club, regional dominance alone won't be enough. Los Angeles, July 17 - After creating history with Oppenheimer (2023), acclaimed director Christopher Nolan will return to the big screen with the epic action fantasy The Odyssey on July 17, 2026, and there is already massive anticipation for it. ## With exactly a year to go before the release, Universal Pictures and Christopher Nolan have already put the movie on advance sale for IMAX theatres that are equipped to screen the epic in 70MM, which is said to be Nolan's format of choice. ## According to The Hollywood Reporter, this is the first time in history that any tickets have gone on sale a year before a film's release. Reportedly, there are around 30 IMAX locations that are capable of playing 70mm film reels, and the bookings for The Odyssey have opened in 26 of them. ## The initial response to the movie is excellent, as expected. The iconic BFI IMAX in London opened the pre-sales for the movie, and in less than 30 minutes, the midnight and 8 PM shows on July 17 are almost sold out. Mumbai, July 17 - Yash Raj Films' romantic drama Saiyaara, starring two newcomers Ahaan Pandey and Aneet Padda, continues to surprise with its advance booking trend. The movie seemingly had a low buzz on social media, but the booking trend is not resonating with that. ## The Mohit Suri's directorial is putting all the pre-release talks in the dustbin and has sold 1,20,000 tickets at the three national chains (PVR, INOX, and Cinepolis) with still 12 hours left for the first show to begin, according to Himesh Mankad of Himesh Mankad of Pinkvilla. This is a historical booking for a movie featuring unknown faces. ## As of 12 PM, the film has sold around 90,000 tickets in PVR+INOX and around 30,000 tickets in Cinepolis for the first day. The final ticket sale count in PIC is expected to be around 1.75-2 lakh, which is phenomenal to say the least. ## Saiyaara Beats Housefull 5 and Raid 2 Final Advance Ticket Count At The National Chains ## Such has been the response that Saiyaara has beaten the final ticket sale count of Akshay Kumar's Housefull 5 and Ajay Devgn's Raid 2, even before the first show begin. Housefull 5 had sold approximately 95,000 tickets, while Raid 2 sold 93,000 tickets at national chains for the first day. ## The movie is now on track to beat Salman Khan's Sikandar, which sold around 1,43,000 tickets. Vicky Kaushal's Chhaava is currently the biggest pre-sales scorer for Bollywood in 2025, with around 2,25,000 tickets in PIC, and Saiyaara will be close to it by the end of the day, if not able to surpass the figure. ## Saiyaara Opening Day Box Office Expecatations ## The Hindi film industry is bracing up for an unexpected big opening, and no one has any answer as to why the movie has suddenly become the hot topic in the trade. With this sort of pre-sales, a 20 crore net opening is given, but the size of the release is not as big as some of the other movies with similar kinds of sales data. ## There is buzz in the industry that YRF is looking to increase the screens after seeing the excellent response in the pre-sales. According to Himesh Mankad of Pinkvilla, the film is aiming to release on 1750 screens nationwide, with the possibility to go higher as well. Mumbai, July 15 - Director Nitesh Tiwari's big screen adaptation of Ramayana is officially the costliest Indian film by a long margin, after producer Namit Malhotra revealed that the budget for this 2-part epic will be in the range of Rs. 4000 crores. ## In a recent podcast, Malhotra said that they have been working on this mega project for the past 6-7 years and by the time they are done with both parts, the budget will be around $500 million, which equals roughly Rs. 4000 crores. ## "We are making the largest film in the world for the greatest story and greatest epic that the world should see. I think it's still cheaper than some of the Hollywood films' budgets. I think we are making a bigger film at a lower cost.
