Pan-India Power Report 2025: Kantara Ch 1 Mints 223 Cr in Hindi; A Reality Check for Southern Dubs in 2025

2025 has been the year of the Pan India Reality Check. The Hindi audience has become ruthless embracing authentic rooted stories like Kantara with open arms while coldly rejecting generic mass actioners, even those starring heavyweights like Pawan Kalyan and Kamal Haasan. While Rishab Shetty emerged as the undisputed king of the Hindi box office this year, other highly anticipated projects like Lokesh Kanagaraj's Coolie and Suriya's Retro posted numbers that fell short of their astronomical pre release hype. From folklore to gangster dramas, here is the ultimate report card of how South Indian films performed in the Hindi belt this year. Movie Industry Hindi Net Collection Kantara: Chapter 1 Sandalwood ₹223.79 Cr Coolie Kollywood ₹37.23 Cr Game Changer Tollywood ₹32.93 Cr Mirai Tollywood ₹16.86 Cr Baahubali: The Epic Animation ₹6.94 Cr HIT: The Third Case Tollywood ₹4.11 Cr Kannappa Tollywood ₹3.98 Cr Lokah: Chapter 1 Mollywood ₹3.78 Cr They Call Him OG Tollywood ₹3.36 Cr L2: Empuraan Mollywood ₹2.59 Cr Thug Life Kollywood ₹1.70 Cr The Girlfriend Tollywood ₹ 0.60 Cr Madharasi Kollywood ₹0.50 Cr Retro Kollywood ₹ 0.49 Cr Daaku Maharaaj Tollywood ₹ 0.40 Cr Hari Hara Veera Mallu Tollywood ₹ 0.33 Cr Bad Girl Kollywood ₹0.06 Cr 1. Kantara:Chapter 1 Industry:Sandalwood (Kannada) Director:Rishab Shetty Star Cast:Rishab Shetty,Rukmini Vasanth
The prequel to the 2022 divine blockbuster Kantara shattered ceilings. Delving deeper into the origins of the Panjurli Daiva during the Kadamba era, the film offered a visual spectacle that was both raw and grandiose. The Divine climax once again became a cultural talking point, driving repeat audiences in Maharashtra and the Hindi belt. It stands as the only true All Time Blockbuster from the South in Hindi this year. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) 2. Coolie Industry:Kollywood (Tamil) Director:Lokesh Kanagaraj Star Cast:Rajinikanth, Nagarjuna, Shruti Haasan, Soubin Shahir.
The union of Thalaivar Rajinikanth and director Lokesh Kanagaraj was expected to set the screens on fire. A stylish gangster drama involving a gold-smuggling syndicate, the film had massive hype. However, the Hindi numbers (₹ 37.23 Cr) suggest it played more to the gallery of existing fans rather than breaking out to the neutral Hindi audience like Vikram or Jailer. 3.Game Changer Industry:Tollywood (Telugu) Director:S. Shankar Star Cast:Ram Charan, Kiara Advani.
Coming off the global high of RRR, Ram Charan teamed up with the showman Shankar. While the film's political theme resonated in the South, the Hindi audience found the narrative slightly dated. ₹ 32.93 Cr is a respectable total but falls short of the expectations set for a Ram Charan and Shankar collaboration. 4.Mirai Industry:Tollywood (Telugu) Director:Karthik Ghattamaneni Star Cast:Teja Sajja, Ritika Nayak.
The surprise package of the year. After HanuMan, Teja Sajja cemented his position with Mirai. Based on the legend of Ashoka's 9 secret books, this Super Yodha film connected well with kids and families, earning nearly ₹ 17 Cr purely on concept strength without a Tier-1 star. 5. Baahubali:The Epic Industry:Pan India (Re-release/Edit) Director:S.S. Rajamouli Star Cast:Prabhas,Anushka Shetty
To celebrate the franchise's legacy, the makers released a special Single Film edit of the two part saga with remastered visuals. While die hard fans turned up, the ₹ 6.95 Cr collection proves that the audience prefers new content over nostalgia trips in theaters. 6. HIT:The Third Case Industry:Tollywood (Telugu) Director:Sailesh Kolanu Star Cast:Nani, Srinidhi Shetty.
Nani entered the HIT universe as Arjun Sarkar. While the film was a critical success in Telugu, the dark, gritty thriller genre has a limited ceiling in the Hindi dubbed market unless backed by massive marketing, reflected in its niche ₹ 4.11 Cr collection. 7. Kannappa Industry:Tollywood (Telugu) Director:Mukesh Kumar Singh Star Cast:Vishnu Manchu,Preity Mukhundhan (Cameos: Prabhas, Akshay Kumar, Mohanlal).
Despite a star-studded lineup of cameos including Prabhas and Akshay Kumar, this mythological drama starring Vishnu Manchu failed to generate buzz in the Hindi belt, collecting a meager ₹ 3.98 Cr. 8. Lokah:Chapter 1 - Chandra Industry:Mollywood(Malayalam) Director:Dominic Arun Star Cast:Kalyani Priyadarshan, Naslen, Sandy.
Malayalam cinema's ambitious entry into the superhero genre! Starring Kalyani Priyadarshan, the film was praised for its VFX and unique world-building. For a Malayalam film without a traditional Mass Hero, earning ₹ 3.78 Cr in Hindi is a positive sign of growth. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) 9.They Call Him OG Industry:Tollywood (Telugu) Director:Sujeeth Star Cast:Pawan Kalyan, Priyanka Mohan.
The biggest shocker of the list. Pawan Kalyan's gangster drama, despite featuring Emraan Hashmi as the antagonist, crashed in Hindi with just ₹ 3.36 Cr. It highlights that Pawan Kalyan's stardom is still strictly regional compared to peers like Prabhas or Allu Arjun. 10. L2:Empuraan Industry:Mollywood (Malayalam) Director:Prithviraj Sukumaran Star Cast:Mohanlal, Manju Warrier,Prithviraj. The sequel to Lucifer. While a massive blockbuster in Kerala, the complex political drama of Empuraan proved too dense for the mass Hindi audience, collecting just ₹ 2.59 Cr. 11. Thug Life Industry:Kollywood (Tamil) Director:Mani Ratnam Star Cast:Kamal Haasan, Trisha Krishnan,Silambarasan TR.
The reunion of legends Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan after decades was a cinematic event, but sadly, only for Tamil Nadu. The Hindi version was a non-starter (₹ 1.7 Cr), proving that Class Classics rarely translate to Mass Hindi Box Office. 12.The Girlfriend
 Industry:Tollywood (Telugu)
 Director:Rahul Ravindran
 Star Cast:Rashmika Mandanna, Dheekshith Shetty.

A solo lead thriller by Rashmika Mandanna. While she is a National Crush, the film's niche subject matter restricted its appeal, leading to a washout in the Hindi dubbed version.
 13.Madharasi
 Director:A.R.Murugadoss
 Star Cast:Sivakarthikeyan, Vidyut Jammwal.

Despite being directed by A.R.Murugadoss (known for Ghajini) and starring Vidyut Jammwal (a known face in Hindi), this film was a disaster in Hindi. It seems the audience has moved past the 2000s style of commercial filmmaking.
 14.Retro Industry:Kollywood (Tamil) Director:Karthik Subbaraj Star Cast:Suriya, Pooja Hegde.
Also known as Suriya 44, this stylish actioner by Karthik Subbaraj was expected to be Suriya's big theatrical comeback in Hindi. The shocking collection of less than ₹ 50 Lakhs indicates a complete failure in marketing or release strategy in the North. 15.Daaku Maharaaj
 Industry:Tollywood (Telugu)
 Director:Bobby Kolli
 Star Cast:Nandamuri Balakrishna, Bobby Deol

Even the presence of Bobby Deol (fresh off Animal fame) couldn't save this Balakrishna mass entertainer in Hindi. The over the top action style of NBK clearly has zero takers in the Hindi belt in 2025.
 16. Hari Hara Veera Mallu
 Industry:Tollywood (Telugu)
 Director:Krish Jagarlamudi,Jyoti Krishna
 Star Cast:Pawan Kalyan, Bobby Deol.

A delayed period drama that felt stale upon arrival. With collections of just ₹33 Lakhs, it stands as a significant commercial underperformer for a star of Pawan Kalyan's stature.
 (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) 17.Bad Girl Industry:Kollywood (Tamil) Director:Varsha Bharath Star Cast:Anjali Sivaraman.
A small budget coming of age drama produced by heavyweights like Vetrimaaran. While critically acclaimed in festivals, it was virtually non-existent at the Hindi box office. Ultimately, 2025 will be remembered as the year the Hindi market transitioned from being a star reliant territory to a landscape defined by audience discernment. The staggering gap between Kantara (₹223 Cr) and generic mass entertainers highlights a significant shift in viewer preferences. When highly anticipated projects featuring legends struggle to gain traction while a rooted folklore thriller creates history, the trend is undeniable. The era of blind loyalty to formulaic tropes is fading, making way for a new chapter of content supremacy.

Pawan Kalyan's Biggest Blockbuster They Call Him OG Gets Its OTT Premiere Date: Here Is When and Where It Will Release

Hyderabad, October 14 - Powerstar Pawan Kalyan’s gangster action thriller They Call Him OG is all set for its digital premiere. Directed by Sujeeth, the high-octane entertainer is nearing the end of its theatrical run after emerging as the biggest grosser of Pawan Kalyan's career at the worldwide box office. Produced by DVV Entertainment, They Call Him OG has grossed approximately 290 crore globally so far, and will miss the 300 crore milestone. Despite that, the film has turned out to be a strong box office success, marking Pawan Kalyan's first 200-crore film and his most successful outing in years. According to the latest official announcement, the movie will begin streaming on Netflix from October 23 in all languages - Telugu, Hindi, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam. Having been released in theatres on September 25, the film follows the standard 28-day theatrical window before heading to digital platforms. The South Indian films continue to stick with a 4-week theatrical window despite the criticism from the trade and media, as they believe the short window is not sufficient, as it cuts short the full box office potential of a movie. The film stars Pawan Kalyan in the titular role, alongside an ensemble cast including Emraan Hashmi (in his Telugu film debut), Priyanka Mohan, Arjun Das, Sriya Reddy, Prakash Raj, Abhimanyu Singh, Sudev Nair and Harish Uthaman. They Call Him OG Opens to Massive Collections: Pawan Kalyan vs Emraan Hashmi Sets Pan-India Buzz

They Call Him OG, the highly anticipated gangster action film, stormed into theatres worldwide on 25 September 2025 and has already made waves with record-breaking collections. Directed by Sujeeth and produced by DVV Danayya under DVV Entertainment, the film stars Pawan Kalyan in the lead role of Ojas Gambheera “OG,” a fearsome gangster who resurfaces in 1993 Mumbai after a decade-long disappearance to settle old scores. The movie has a stellar cast, including Priyanka Mohan as Dr Kanmani, Prakash Raj, Arjun Das, Sriya Reddy, Shaam, Harish Uthaman, Rahul Ravindran, and Jackie Shroff in a cameo. With Thaman S handling the music and Ravi K. Chandran alongside Manoj Paramahamsa behind the camera, OG is mounted on a grand scale, running for about 154 minutes and certified A by the CBFC for its high-octane violence. ##One of the film’s biggest talking points is the Telugu cinema debut of Bollywood star Emraan Hashmi. Known for his intense performances in Hindi films, Hashmi steps into uncharted territory with OG, playing the antagonist Omi Bhau. His role is positioned as the perfect counterweight to Pawan Kalyan’s OG, setting up a high-voltage hero-versus-villain dynamic that has already become the centrepiece of fan discussions. Industry analysts note that Hashmi's entry into Telugu films is significant not just because of his star value in Bollywood, but also because it signals the increasing pan-Indian appeal of Telugu cinema. By pitting him against a massive star like Pawan Kalyan, the makers have ensured nationwide interest in the film, with Hindi belt audiences equally curious about the clash. His portrayal of Omi Bhau has been described in media reports as menacing, stylish, and crucial in raising the stakes of the narrative. This crossover has also been highlighted in promotional campaigns, further boosting the film’s reach across North and South India. ##The box office response has validated the hype. Early trade reports suggest that the film collected around 100 crores gross in India and 150 crores worldwide. Advance bookings were extraordinary, with nearly 98 crore gross worldwide for the opening day. Overseas, particularly in North America, the film set new benchmarks by becoming the highest-grossing Telugu film of 2025 from its premiere shows alone and securing the 4th biggest Telugu premiere day ever in the US market, ahead of recent blockbusters like Devara: Part 1 and Salaar: Part 1. ##The combination of Pawan Kalyan’s stardom and Emraan Hashmi’s fresh presence has been a huge driver of buzz. For Telugu audiences, the excitement of seeing a Bollywood actor in such a powerful antagonist’s role adds novelty, while Hindi-speaking viewers are keen to see Hashmi in a new cinematic landscape. The film’s producers have reportedly spent lavishly to stage confrontations between the two stars, ensuring that their rivalry becomes the selling point of OG. Industry observers also see this as part of a larger trend of Telugu filmmakers roping in popular Bollywood actors to appeal to a pan-Indian audience, much like how Prithviraj Sukumaran in Salaar and Sanjay Dutt in KGF 2 boosted those films’ reach. ##With a confirmed sequel (They Call Him OG 2) already in the works and references in the film hinting at a shared universe with Sujeeth’s earlier film Saaho, the future of the franchise looks bright. For Emraan Hashmi, this debut not only widens his fan base into the South but also opens doors for more pan-Indian projects. For Pawan Kalyan, it reinforces his box office dominance, showing that even amid his political commitments, his star power continues to draw record crowds. ##In short, They Call Him OG is not just a big win for Pawan Kalyan’s career but also a landmark moment for Emraan Hashmi, whose Telugu debut has added a new dimension to his career and brought a fresh spark to Telugu cinema. With box office numbers climbing rapidly, the film is expected to be one of the year’s biggest successes, and the Pawan-Emraan face-off is likely to be remembered as one of the most talked-about on-screen rivalries in recent Telugu film history.

They Call Him OG Becomes Pawan Kalyan's Biggest Opener With Advance Booking

Hyderabad, September 24 - Power star Pawan Kalyan's gangster action thriller They Call Him OG is set to storm the box office. The film has been receiving an exceptional response in pre-sales, not just in India but also in international markets. Directed by Sujeeth, They Call Him OG still has a few hours left for the release, and even before that, it has become Pawan Kalyan's biggest opener ever. The advance booking of the film is nearing 75 crores worldwide for the opening day, making it the biggest opener for the superstar. The previous biggest opener of PK was Hari Hara Veera Mallu, which scored approximately 67 crores worldwide on its opening day. OG, meanwhile, is heading towards taking a 2x start of HHVM, with trade believes that it might even take the opening of 150+ crores gross globally. It will be quite astonishing if OG manages to take the opening of 150+ crores, as it will be very close to PK's biggest lifetime worldwide grosser Bheemla Nayak (158.50 crores). Irrespective of what the opening will be, one thing is clear that OG will become the actor's biggest grosser within two days, which will probably be a record for a film featuring an A-lister. OG is heading towards scoring 90-100 crores pre-sales for the opening day. So far, it has grossed approximately 45 crores in India and 30 crores overseas, including the premiere shows. The pre-sales momentum has been excellent for OG, which is easily the most hyped film of PK in recent times. Produced by DVV Entertainment, OG stars Pawan Kalyan in the titular role, alongside Emraan Hashmi (in his Telugu film debut), Priyanka Mohan, Arjun Das, Sriya Reddy and Prakash Raj. The film revolves around a gangster named Ojas Gambheera who returns to Mumbai following his ten-year disappearance to kill another crime boss, Omi Bhau. Stay tuned...

They Call Him OG North America Premiere Advance Booking: Pawan Kalyan's Comeback Storm Begins With Bang

Los Angeles, August 29 - After the dismal performance of Hari Hara Veera Mallu, the power star Pawan Kalyan is ready to bounce back with a bang. The Telugu superstar has begun showcasing his raw stardom with one of his most highly anticipated films in recent times, They Call Him OG, in advance bookings at the North American box office. Directed by Sujeeth, the gangster action thriller is still nearly 4 weeks away from hitting the big screens, but the pre-sales are already breathing fire as far as the North America premiere is concerned. The pre-sales of OG began on August 27 in NA, and in no time, it has crossed $500K already for the premiere, which is on September 24. During the first hour of pre-sales opening, OG saw record-breaking response, with four shows at Cinemark Dallas selling out in minutes. Seeing the response, 35 premiere shows have already been scheduled at one of the top-grossing Cinemark theatres in Dallas, by distributor Prathyangira Cinemas. The pre-sales exploded as more locations opened the booking, and as per Venky Box Office, it has crossed $500K from nearly 1125 shows over 300 locations and sold over 17,000 tickets. OG is the fastest Telugu title to achieve $500K pre-sales in North America. Prathyangira Cinemas has kept ticket prices as high as $25-$30, as fans fuel a potential blockbuster. Going by the initial trend, OG will be eyeing one of the biggest premiere days in North America for a Telugu film. Trade anticipates that the film might cross $2 million premiere gross, which will be the highest for a Pawan Kalyan-starrer. OG stars Pawan Kalyan in the title role of Ojas Gambheera alongside Emraan Hashmi as Omi Bhau (in his Telugu film debut), and Priyanka Mohan as the female lead. Pawan Kalyan's Action Thriller 'OG' Creates Pre-Release Buzz With Record-Breaking Theatrical Deal in Sight

Hyderabad, July 12 - Telugu superstar Pawan Kalyan is set to dominate the latter half of 2025 with two major releases - Hari Hara Veera Mallu and OG. While HHVM, after multiple delays, is finally slated to hit the big screens on July 24, it is director Sujeeth's action thriller, OG, that is generating unprecedented buzz among fans and trade circles alike. ## Even before the release of HHVM and in the absence of an official teaser or trailer for OG, the film's theatrical business is already a hot topic in the industry. According to a report by Track Tollywood, multiple distributors are in discussions with DVV Entertainment to finalise the theatrical rights for the Telugu states. The makers are reportedly quoting over ₹150 crore, a record-breaking figure for any Pawan Kalyan film to date. ## Should the deal be finalised at the quoted price, OG will become only the fifth film — after RRR, Salaar, Kalki 2898 AD, and Pushpa 2 — to cross the ₹150 crore mark in theatrical business for the Telugu states (Andhra Pradesh and Telangana). This not only marks a massive milestone in Pawan Kalyan's career but also highlights the soaring expectations surrounding the film. ## OG features Pawan Kalyan in the powerful titular role of Ojas Gambheera, a feared gangster who resurfaces in Mumbai after a decade-long disappearance to confront and eliminate a rival crime boss, Omi Bhau, played by Emraan Hashmi. The film also stars Priyanka Mohan and Arjun Das in key roles. ## Directed by Sujeeth and produced by DVV Danayya under the DVV Entertainment banner, OG is scheduled for a worldwide release on September 25 this year in multiple languages. With its high-octane premise, star-studded cast, and record-setting buzz, OG is one of the biggest cinematic events of 2025. ## Stay tuned...
