Against All Odds: How Kantara Transcended Borders, Beliefs, and Box Office Giants Like Coolie

In a year defined by cinematic contrasts, two films have dominated India’s box office conversation — Kantara: Chapter 1 and Coolie. One is a rooted, spiritual saga born from Karnataka’s folklore; the other, a high-voltage pan-India action entertainer led by a superstar ensemble. Yet both, in their own ways, have redefined what success looks like in 2025. While Coolie stormed into theatres with massive pre-release hype and record-breaking advances, Kantara took a different route — slow, steady, and fuelled by pure audience passion. Together, they reflect the power of both spectacle and soul in Indian cinema’s ever-evolving landscape. Coolie opened to thunderous numbers, earning around ₹77 crore[India Gross] on its first day and soaring past ₹272 crore in its opening week across all versions. With Rajinikanth leading the charge and Lokesh Kanagaraj at the helm, the film was always destined for a grand start. The advance bookings alone — crossing ₹46.36 crore[With Block Seats] in India — signaled a festival at the box office. From Singapore to Chennai, fan celebrations, themed screenings, and paid holidays turned Coolie into more than a film — it became a cultural event. In contrast, Kantara: Chapter 1 carried forward the legacy of Rishab Shetty’s 2022 phenomenon with a quieter but deeply resonant entry. Opening to strong word-of-mouth and organic audience buzz, the film saw consistent growth throughout its extended eight-day opening week. The film touched an impressive ₹403.25 crore [India Gross] within that period, driven largely by its Kannada and Telugu versions, with its dubbed releases expanding its reach nationwide. Overseas too, Kantara stunned trade observers by outperforming early estimates, achieving milestone numbers in North America, the UAE, and parts of Europe. Its Hindi version alone entered the ₹100 crore club — a rare feat for a non-Hindi, folklore-based film. The success of Kantara lies not in marketing muscle but in its emotional pull. The film’s exploration of divine justice, land, and faith resonated deeply across demographics. Audiences didn’t just watch it — they experienced it. This strong connection translated into repeat viewings and minimal weekday drops, with the eighth day itself adding over ₹21.15 crore [India Net] — proof of its staying power. On the other hand, Coolie exemplified the might of stardom and scale — a reminder that high-octane storytelling and mass appeal still dominate the multiplex game. Both films thrived, but for very different reasons. Coolie leveraged superstardom, scale, and spectacle, while Kantara harnessed storytelling, authenticity, and emotion. In an industry where marketing often dictates momentum, Kantara’s rise through sheer audience word-of-mouth shows the timeless power of rooted storytelling. Meanwhile, Coolie’s performance reaffirms that grand cinema, when executed with precision, can still unify audiences across languages and borders. Together, they form two sides of India’s cinematic coin — one shining with grandeur, the other glowing with grace — and both proving that 2025 truly belongs to every kind of story.

While the film’s box office performance may not have matched the scale of his action-packed ventures, it carved its own niche with strong regional appeal, solid advance bookings, and an engaging storyline. Raayan’s overseas opening of ₹7.25 cr itself is part of its premiere and market buzz story. The opening weekend clearly highlights the varying scales of Dhanush’s 2025 releases. Kuberaa emerged as the strongest debut, followed closely by Raayan, while Idli Kadai made a more modest start yet resonated well in its core regional markets. Pradeep Ranganathan’s Dude (2025) Set to Rule the Diwali Box Office? Kollywood

Pradeep Ranganathan’s Dude (2025) Set to Rule the Diwali Box Office?

Pradeep Ranganathan is set to light up the silver screen once again this Diwali with his much-awaited film Dude (2025), directed by Keerthiswaran and produced by Mythri Movie Makers. Scheduled to release on October 17, the film has already cleared censor formalities with a U/A certificate and a runtime of 139 minutes. The movie stars Pradeep alongside Mamitha Baiju, with R. Sarathkumar and Rohini in key supporting roles, while the music is composed by Sai Abhyankkar. Dude arrives at a crucial moment in Pradeep’s career — after the phenomenal success of Love Today and Dragon, two films that turned him from a young creative voice into a reliable box-office draw. Pradeep’s rise has been remarkable. His directorial-acting debut Love Today (2022) was a modestly budgeted romantic comedy that became one of the most profitable Tamil films of the year, grossing well beyond expectations through strong word-of-mouth and youth appeal. His follow-up, Dragon (2025), expanded his market reach with a larger budget and a pan-regional release, crossing the ₹100-crore mark worldwide and cementing his position as a star with consistent audience pull. Given this track record, expectations for Dude are naturally sky-high, with fans keen to see if he can complete a hat-trick of hits this Diwali. Dude is said to blend youthful romance with emotional family drama, carrying a multigenerational theme that revolves around the sacred thaali and the relationships it symbolizes. Early reports hint at a storyline that reimagines a young Rajinikanth-like personality through Pradeep’s character, a creative hook that has already generated interest among Tamil audiences. The film’s pre-release business has also been impressive — Netflix has reportedly acquired the digital streaming rights for around ₹25 crore, a deal substantial enough to recover most of the production cost even before its theatrical debut. This ensures the producers are already on safe ground, and the theatrical earnings will primarily benefit distributors and exhibitors. Comparing Dude with Pradeep’s earlier ventures gives some context. Love Today relied heavily on emotional relatability and word-of-mouth, whereas Dragon thrived on scale, music, and spectacle. Dude seems positioned between the two — big enough to feel festive but still grounded in sentiment and humor. The songs released so far, including “Oorum Blood” and “Singari,” have already gained traction online, and Sai Abhyankkar’s energetic score adds freshness to Pradeep’s onscreen persona. The film’s Diwali timing will also test its endurance against competing releases like Bison and other regional titles. With Mythri Movie Makers’ strong distribution network and Pradeep’s growing pan-Indian recognition, Dude could easily dominate multiplex chains in its opening weekend if early reviews are positive. The holiday period offers an added advantage — sustained footfalls through Monday and Tuesday could push its first-week totals far ahead of regular-season openers. Overall, Dude represents a fascinating moment for Tamil cinema — a film that merges the commercial instincts of a star on the rise with the storytelling curiosity of a debutant director. With its pre-sale success, carefully timed release, and built-in goodwill from Pradeep’s previous hits, the movie enters Diwali week as a strong contender for the festival’s biggest box-office performer. Whether it can turn that promise into another record-breaking run will depend on audience response in the first few days. For now, Dude looks well-positioned to extend Pradeep Ranganathan’s box-office streak and possibly crown him as the new Diwali favorite of Tamil cinema. Take a look at the India Gross collection of his previous movies Love Today(2022):₹ 78.55 Cr Dragon(2025): ₹ 117.52 Cr

Idli Kadai Takes Career Best Opening For Dhanush In Tamil Nadu

Chennai, October 2 - Tamil star Dhanush's action drama film Idly Kadai has taken a good start at the Indian box office, grossing approximately 13 crores. Unlike the previous few films, it has been the least hyped movie of Dhanush in recent times, yet it has managed to make a mark at the box office. Directed by Dhanush himself, Idli Kadai has become the biggest opener for the actor in the home state, Tamil Nadu, collecting approximately 10.75 crores gross. It has beaten Raayan, which scored 10.60 crores gross in the state on its first day last year. Idli Kadai was released amid low hype, but it got the holiday advantage, which propelled its opening to double digits and beyond, eventually creating a record for Dhanush in the state. Apart from Tamil Nadu, the movie minted approximately 1.25 crores in Karnataka and another 1 crore in the rest of India markets. The reception for the film is contrasting. While Tamil critics praised the film, reviews were opposite outside the home market. Dhanush: Tracing the Remarkable Journey of a Versatile Actor from Thulluvadho Ilamai to International Acclaim and His Film Idli Kadai

Dhanush, born Venkatesh Prabhu Kasthuri Raja on July 28, 1983, in Theni, Tamil Nadu, is a multifaceted talent in Indian cinema—an actor, director, producer, singer, lyricist, and international presence. He made his acting debut in 2002 with Thulluvadho Ilamai, directed by his father Kasthuri Raja, and gained widespread recognition in 2003 with Kaadhal Kondein, directed by his brother Selvaraghavan, portraying a mentally disturbed youth with critical acclaim. He quickly followed this with commercially successful films like Thiruda Thirudi (2003) and Devathayai Kanden (2005), as well as action dramas like Sullan (2004) and Pudhukottaiyilirundhu Saravanan (2004), which helped him gain popularity with younger audiences. His collaborations with Selvaraghavan, including Pudhupettai (2006), cemented his reputation for taking on intense and unconventional roles. The turning point came with Polladhavan (2007), a gritty drama inspired by neo-realist cinema, followed by Yaaradi Nee Mohini (2008), which showcased his lighter, romantic side. With Aadukalam (2010), directed by Vetrimaaran, Dhanush delivered a career-defining performance as a rooster fighter, earning him the National Film Award for Best Actor. In 2011, he gained pan-Indian recognition when his song “Why This Kolaveri Di” from 3 became a global viral sensation. His career continued to diversify with films like Mayakkam Enna (2011), Maryan (2013), and his Bollywood debut Raanjhanaa (2013), where his portrayal of a passionate lover opposite Sonam Kapoor won critical and popular acclaim across India. Dhanush consolidated his mass appeal with commercial entertainers like Velaiilla Pattadhari (2014) and its sequel, as well as Maari (2015), in which his quirky don character became a fan favorite. He explored political drama in Kodi (2016), before delivering some of his most acclaimed performances in Vada Chennai (2018), a raw gangster epic, and Asuran (2019), a searing caste-based drama that earned him his second National Film Award for Best Actor. His versatility continued with family entertainer Thiruchitrambalam (2022) and the bilingual period drama Vaathi (2023), further proving his ability to balance content-driven cinema with box office success. On the international front, Dhanush starred in the French-English production The Extraordinary Journey of the Fakir (2018) and appeared in the Russo Brothers’ Hollywood action thriller The Gray Man (2022), sharing screen space with Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans, marking his entry into mainstream global cinema. Alongside acting, Dhanush has excelled as a director and producer under his Wunderbar Films banner. His directorial debut Pa Paandi (2017) was a heartwarming tale about rediscovering love and life. His 50th film, Raayan (2024), an action thriller written and directed by him with music by A. R. Rahman, marked a milestone in his career. Now, with his 52nd film Idli Kadai, Dhanush once again takes the director’s chair for a heartfelt rural family drama. The film tells the story of a man returning to his roots to run his father’s idli shop, only to face conflicts with a wealthy hotelier. With an ensemble cast featuring Nithya Menen, Arun Vijay, Shalini Pandey, Sathyaraj, R. Parthiban, P. Samuthirakani, and Rajkiran, Idli Kadai has generated significant buzz, with advance bookings indicating strong anticipation. In conclusion, Dhanush’s journey from a debutant in Thulluvadho Ilamai to an internationally recognized actor demonstrates a rare combination of versatility, risk-taking, and consistent audience appeal. Balancing critically acclaimed performances, commercial blockbusters, pan-Indian ventures, and Hollywood projects, he has continually expanded the boundaries of his craft. Milestones like Aadukalam, Raanjhanaa, Asuran, his 50th film Raayan, and now the eagerly anticipated Idli Kadai reflect not only his ability to reinvent himself but also his commitment to storytelling that resonates across cultures and generations. With his evolving repertoire as an actor, director, and producer, Dhanush has firmly established himself as one of the most influential and enduring figures in contemporary Indian cinema, and Idli Kadai promises to add yet another remarkable chapter to his illustrious career. Dhanush at the Box Office:Idli Kadai’s Early Buzz vs the Runs of Kuberaa and Raayan

Dhanush’s career trajectory over the last two years has been marked by films of contrasting genres and market strategies, each carrying its own level of buzz, box office performance, and cultural impact. His upcoming directorial, Idli Kadai, set to release on October 1, 2025, has already begun to draw considerable attention with its family-oriented theme, emotional trailer, and the director-actor’s focus on his Madurai roots. The film is being promoted as a heartwarming drama, distinct from his recent action-heavy ventures.Advance booking for Idli Kadai has opened on a strong note, with the film grossed around ₹79.59 lakh in pre-sales for its Tamil 2D version on day one. This figure comes from over 2,000 shows nationwide, with more than 52,000 tickets sold ahead of release. Within Tamil Nadu alone, the advance bookings accounted for approximately ₹76.08 lakh, underscoring the film’s strong pull in Dhanush’s home market. While these numbers are still early and may fluctuate as final block-seat adjustments are made, they clearly highlight the positive momentum and anticipation surrounding the film before its theatrical debut. ##By comparison, Kuberaa, which released in June 2025 under the direction of Sekhar Kammula, took a different route. Designed as a pan-South crime drama with a star-studded cast including Nagarjuna and Rashmika Mandanna alongside Dhanush, it was one of the most ambitious productions of the year. At the box office, however, the film experienced contrasting fortunes across regions: it was a commercial success in the Telugu market, contributing the lion’s share of its lifetime gross, the movie collected ₹135.75 crore worldwide, but it underperformed in Tamil Nadu, where it failed to fully capitalize on Dhanush’s stardom. While the film was praised for its scale and performances, mixed reviews and uneven word-of-mouth limited its overall impact. Nonetheless, the project demonstrated Dhanush’s growing pan-Indian presence and ability to headline multi-lingual ventures, even if the results were not consistent across all markets. ##Looking further back, Raayan, released in July 2024, remains a defining success in Dhanush’s filmography. Marketed as his landmark 50th film and directed by Dhanush himself, it blended gritty action with an A. R. Rahman soundtrack, creating enormous pre-release excitement. Despite critical debates over its violent content and the adult certification it received, Raayan went on to become one of the biggest Tamil blockbusters of the year, with final grosses estimated at ₹154 crore worldwide. The mass-appeal action sequences made it a hit with younger audiences and in dubbed markets beyond Tamil Nadu. The film reinforced Dhanush’s credentials not only as a versatile actor but also as a director capable of delivering large-scale, commercially viable projects. ## Raayan and Kuberaa State Wise Box Office Comparison (India Gross)MovieKarnataka CollectionAPTG CollectionTamil Nadu CollectionKerala CollectionRaayan (2024)₹ 10.84 Cr₹ 15.22 Cr₹ 74.07 Cr₹ 5.22 CrKuberaa (2025)₹ 12.22 Cr₹ 66.79 Cr₹ 20.44 Cr₹ 1.47 Cr## ##Taken together, these three films highlight Dhanush’s ability to balance very different cinematic spaces—Raayan capitalized on mass action entertainment, Kuberaa tested the waters of multi-lingual ensemble dramas, and Idli Kadai is leaning on emotional resonance and family appeal. The box office trajectory shows that while Raayan set a high benchmark with its career-best numbers, Kuberaa settled into a respectable but more regionally skewed performance, and Idli Kadai is now poised to test how far Dhanush’s star power can drive a rooted, content-led film in a festive season. With its pre-release momentum and unique positioning, Idli Kadai could potentially carve its own niche and continue Dhanush’s streak of keeping audiences engaged across genres and markets.

Rajinikanth's Coolie Final Worldwide Box Office Collection, Records, and Verdict

Chennai, September 29 – Superstar Rajinikanth's mass entertainer Coolie has wrapped up its theatrical run at the global box office with mixed results. Despite a record opening and strong initial buzz, the film couldn't sustain the same momentum in the following weeks, leading to an average overall performance. Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, Coolie opened to earth earth-shattering start of over 150 crores worldwide, before opening weekend collection of around 385 crores, both record numbers for Tamil cinema. However, poor critics' reviews and mixed word of mouth proved to be a roadblock in its promising theatrical run, which ended before its desired result. The gangster action drama was eyed as the potential 1000 crores grosser, but it could only manage a little over 500 crores worldwide. The final collection, however, is not a small total by any means, but the movie needed to score much more to be termed as a box office hit. The trade estimated that Coolie needed to score around 600 crores worldwide to break even. Here Is The Final Worldwide Box Office Breakdown of Coolie (Est.) India Net Box Office Collection₹ 285.00 Cr India Gross Box Office Collection₹ 338.00 Cr Overseas Box Office Collection₹ 180.50 Cr Worldwide Box Office Collection₹ 518.50 Cr India Footfalls/Admits1.80 Cr approx. In terms of audience reach, Coolie recorded approximately 1.80 crore (estimated) footfalls in India, a decent turnout but considerably lower compared to Rajinikanth’s biggest blockbuster, Jailer. The film opened huge, even scoring one of the biggest debuts of the year, but it lost the plot in the coming weeks, which curtailed its long-run potential. Given the huge pre-release business and expectations riding on it, the film's outcome has been tagged as a below-average to average verdict at the box office. While not a disaster, Coolie couldn't replicate the superstar's past blockbuster highs and will be remembered as a film that started big but settled for a modest finish in the end. Stay tuned...

Critics of the premiere highlighted that Idli Kadai combines commercial appeal with grounded storytelling, a balance that has become Dhanush’s signature as a filmmaker. ##Industry expectations suggest that Idli Kadai could turn out to be one of Dhanush’s most successful films, blending strong box office potential with heartfelt storytelling. The film benefits from a positive pre-release buzz, an emotionally driven trailer, and a strategic festive holiday release window, all of which are seen as favorable factors for its performance. Early overseas premieres, particularly in Southeast Asia and the US, have drawn encouraging responses, indicating that the film may enjoy significant contributions from international markets as well. ##In all, Idli Kadai arrives with the promise of being more than just a rural family drama — it carries the weight of Dhanush’s personal storytelling, a stellar ensemble, mass-friendly music, and an emotional pull that could make it both a box office winner and a memorable addition to Tamil cinema in 2025.

Sivakarthikeyan's Madharaasi Struggles To Reach 100 Crore Worldwide

Chennai, September 15 - Tamil star Sivakarthikeyan's psychological action thriller Madharaasi was released amid decent hype, but it surprised everyone by opening to better-than-expected collection at the worldwide box office. However, things haven't gone as planned since then for the movie. Directed by AR Murugadoss, Madharaasi had a good opening weekend worldwide with approximately 62 crores. At that point, the movie looked like a sure-shot blockbuster, but after the opening weekend, the pace had slowed down, as the movie had been struggling to reach 100 crores globally. In the second weekend, the maiden collaboration between Sivakarthikeyan and Murugadoss has managed to gross only 10-11 crores worldwide, dropping by a huge over 80% from the first frame. The film's total collection through the second frame (10 days) is around 91 crores gross, including around 67 crores in India. Madharaasi will still be able to cross 100 crores worldwide, but it will take a lot of effort for the film to reach there. A milestone, which looked inevitable at one point, has become a mountain to climb. The early word of mouth suggested a positive reception, but the sharp downward trend has dampened the momentum. Much now depends on whether the film can stabilise during the weekdays and attract audiences to go beyond the century mark. Stay tuned...

Pongal 2026 Showdown: Sivakarthikeyan's Parasakthi Joins The Festive Race Against Thalapathy Vijay's Jana Nayagan

Chennai, September 12 - The Tamil cinema is bracing up for a major box office showdown on Pongal 2026 after Sivakarthikeyan's much-awaited period political drama film Parashakti confirms indirect clash with Thalapathy Vijay's swan song Jana Nayagan. Directed by Sudha Kongara, Parashakti is reportedly based on true events, revolving around the Anti-Hindi agitations in Tamil Nadu that happened in 1965. On Friday (September 12), the makers announced that this much-awaited movie will be hitting worldwide cinemas on January 14, 2026, coinciding with the Pongal festival. Produced by Dawn Pictures, Parashakti was initially supposed to be headlined by Suriya, who backed out for some reason. It has Sreeleela as the female lead, alongside Ravi Mohan, who plays the antagonist. The film also stars Rana Daggubati, Atharvaa, Basil Joseph, and others. Parashakti will be released four days after Thalapathy Vijay's final film Jana Nayagan, before his political entry. Both movies are political thrillers, which are expected to score big box office numbers, and might also invite criticism for their genre. 💥💥💥😊👍 pic.twitter.com/jrljjJv98U— Sivakarthikeyan (@Siva_Kartikeyan) September 12, 2025 Stay tuned...

Madharaasi at the Crossroads: After a ₹41.3 Cr(net) Run, Can It Power into 2025’s Top 10 Tamil Grossers? Kollywood

Madharaasi at the Crossroads: After a ₹41.3 Cr(net) Run, Can It Power into 2025’s Top 10 Tamil Grossers?

After opening to an impressive reception, Madharaasi, the high-octane psychological action thriller starring Sivakarthikeyan and directed by AR Murugadoss, has now entered a crucial stage in its box office journey. The film launched theatrically on September 5, 2025, with strong buzz and high expectations. Over its opening weekend, the film performed well, especially in Tamil Nadu and urban centers. However, Monday brought a sharp decline, raising questions about its long-term sustainability. ##Have a glance at the day wise box office collection India Gross ##.Day 1 (Friday), Madharaasi collected ₹16 crore ##.Day 2 (Saturday) this was followed by ₹14.25 crore ##.Day 3 (Sunday) ₹13.4 crore , bringing the 3-day domestic total to ₹43.65 crore ##.Day 4 (Monday) collection dropped significantly to ₹4.85 crore, marking a steep ~70% decline compared to its opening day. ##As of the end of Day 4, the film’s India net total stands at ₹41.30 crore, and the gross domestic total is approximately ₹48.73 crore. Globally, Madharaasi has grossed over ₹63 crore so far.Audience feedback has been a mix of appreciation and caution—while Sivakarthikeyan’s intense transformation and the film’s sleek action sequences earned praise, the second half’s pacing and psychological elements drew divided reactions. On platforms like BookMyShow and IMDb, the film holds a moderately positive score, indicating a strong opening pull with slightly dampened repeat value. Critics have noted this as one of Sivakarthikeyan’s boldest roles to date, applauding his shift from light-hearted, family-friendly entertainers to darker, more layered characters. In comparison to his recent films, Madharaasi outpaces the opening numbers of Amaran and Don, signaling growth in his mass appeal. For AR Murugadoss, this marks his first theatrical release after a brief hiatus post-Darbar, and while it may not rival the box office dominance of Thuppakki or Sarkar, it does re-establish his relevance in high-concept commercial cinema. Despite the drop, the film is poised to enter the Top 10 Kollywood grossers of 2025 shortly. ##However, its budget—estimated around ₹180 crore—means it still has a long way to go before turning a profit. Analysts estimate the film needs to gross at least ₹150–170 crore worldwide to break even. Factors like upcoming holidays , overseas traction in Tamil-centric markets, and limited regional competition could help the film regain momentum. If weekday collections hold steady and word-of-mouth improves, Madharaasi still has a chance to evolve from a strong opener into a long-running hit. But for now, it stands at a crossroad: promising start, wobbly weekday, and everything riding on the second weekend.

Chennai, September 8 - The rising Tamil star Sivakarthikeyan's psychological action thriller film Madharaasi opened in the worldwide cinemas this weekend. Despite the low buzz, the film managed to make a mark at the box office with a good collection in India and overseas. Directed by AR Murugadoss, Madharaasi marks his maiden collaboration with Sivakarthikeyan and a reunion with Vidyut Jammwal. The film opened to mostly positive reviews in the home market, particularly in Tamil Nadu, and a mixed reception elsewhere, which was also reflected in its opening weekend business. Madharasi scored a hat-trick of double-digit scores in Tamil Nadu, even though the trend remained on the downward side. After opening to over 12+ crores gross, the film scored 11 crores on Saturday and around 10.50 crores on Sunday to close the opening weekend with approximately 34 crores gross in the state. Overall, Madharaasi grossed approximately 43 crores opening weekend in India, which is the second biggest for Sivakarthikeyan after Amaran, which minted big 95+ crores in its 4-day weekend in 2024. Madharaasi Box Office: Sivakarthikeyan Scores His Second Biggest Opener Worldwide; Solid In Tamil Nadu

Chennai, September 6 – Sivakarthikeyan's much-awaited psychological action-drama Madharaasi has taken a good start at the worldwide box office, registering the actor's second-best opening day collections to date. The film, directed by AR Murugadoss, arrived with high expectations and good pre-release buzz, which translated into impressive footfalls on its first day. Madharaasi collected over 21 crores gross worldwide, making it the second-biggest opener for Sivakarthikeyan after Amaran (34.70 crores). In India, Madharasi scored around 16 crores, including 12+ gross in Tamil Nadu. This also makes it Siva's second biggest opener in India as well as in his home state. The film witnessed strong occupancy across major cities, while Tier-2 centres also contributed significantly to the overall numbers. The movie had good advance booking trends, thanks to the late push ahead of release, which set the stage for a good start, coupled with Sivakarthikeyan’s growing popularity among family and youth audiences. The festive weekend and positive initial word of mouth are expected to further boost collections in the coming days. If the momentum continues, Madharaasi has the potential to become one of the highest-grossing films in Sivakarthikeyan's career. Early audience reactions highlight the film's gripping storyline, mass appeal, and the lead cast's power-packed performance as the major driving factors behind its opening. With competition from other Tamil releases being limited this week, Madharaasi enjoys a clear run at the box office and is likely to post robust numbers through the weekend. It can also prove to be a solid comeback for director Murugadoss, after the failure of Sikandar, if momentum sustains. Stay tuned...

Coolie OTT Release Date Out: Rajinikanth Starrer to Stream Post Box Office Underperformance

Chennai, September 4 - Superstar Rajinikanth’s much-awaited gangster action drama Coolie is set to make its digital debut earlier than anticipated following its underwhelming box office performance. Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, the film hit theatres on August 14, ahead of the Independence Day holiday. On Thursday (September 4), the makers officially confirmed the post-theatrical digital release. Coolie will begin streaming on Amazon Prime Video from September 11, just four weeks after its theatrical release, in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada languages. The Hindi version remains uncertain, with reports suggesting that it will premiere digitally only after eight weeks, sometime in the second week of October, due to an existing pre-agreement with multiplex chains. Earlier speculations indicated that no version of Coolie would release digitally before eight weeks, but the latest announcement confirms otherwise. Produced by Sun Pictures, the film opened to massive hype, and a robust opening weekend gross of nearly 400 crore worldwide justified that same. However, collections dipped sharply in the following weeks, and the movie is now expected to finish below a disappointing 525 crore globally. Coolie marked the first collaboration between Rajinikanth and Lokesh, as it also stars Nagarjuna Akkineni, Soubin Shahir, Upendra, Shruti Haasan, Sathyaraj and Rachita Ram, with Aamir Khan and Pooja Hegde in special appearances. In the film, a former coolie union leader investigates the death of his friend, which leads him to a crime syndicate. Stay tuned...

Leo vs. Madharaasi: Is Sivakarthikeyan the New Future of Tamil Cinema?

Chennai, September 4 - A titan of Tamil cinema with a legacy spanning over three decades, Vijay has consistently delivered blockbuster films that not only shattered box office records but also created lasting cultural moments. His influence runs deep in the industry, making him a truly irreplaceable figure—a sentiment echoed even by Sivakarthikeyan, who stated, "No one can replace the legacy of Vijay." Meanwhile, Sivakarthikeyan, whose upcoming film Madharaasi is set to release on September 5, 2025, stands at the threshold of superstardom. With a string of successful and diverse films like Doctor, Don, Maaveeran, and Amaran, he has carved out a unique identity for himself among the new generation of Tamil actors. The buzz around a potential "passing of the baton" gained traction when Vijay, in GOAT, was seen handing a gun to Sivakarthikeyan in a scene that many interpreted symbolically—as if the future of Tamil cinema was being entrusted to him. However, Sivakarthikeyan was quick to clarify that he viewed the moment as a gesture of affection and support, not succession. He added, "I cannot replicate Vijay sir's journey; I have to create my own," and emphasised that, "There can only be one Thalapathy... nobody can replace them." Industry sentiment also seems to reflect this transitional phase. Director AR Murugadoss, who is helming Madharaasi, praised Sivakarthikeyan's openness to work with emerging directors—likening it to the early encouragement once given by stars like Vijay and Ajith. With Vijay gradually shifting focus towards politics, many analysts suggest that Tamil cinema may be entering a new era—one where content-driven narratives and new-age stars could take centre stage. Sivakarthikeyan's recent blockbuster Amaran (2024) stands as a testament to his growing mass appeal—it was one of the highest-grossing Tamil films of the year. The upcoming Pongal 2026 is already setting the stage for a high-stakes box office clash, with Sivakarthikeyan’s Parasakthi slated to go head-to-head against Vijay’s Jana Nayagan. The matchup is generating intense excitement, symbolic of the ongoing narrative in the industry. Fan discussions across social media and forums reflect a divided yet hopeful tone. Some argue that "Sivakarthikeyan has the potential among everyone else to be the next superstar," while others suggest that the era of actors alone pulling crowds is fading: "Hereafter, there will not be a massive pull to theatres just due to superstar image... content matters." These perspectives suggest that while Sivakarthikeyan has undeniable momentum, achieving the rare air of legacy-level superstardom will require continued evolution and impact. In conclusion, the narrative isn't about replacement but progression. Vijay remains an irreplaceable icon—his career defined by decades of discipline, devotion, and triumph. Sivakarthikeyan, rather than stepping into his shoes, is building his own bridge—connecting respect for the past with a clear, forward-looking vision. The excitement around him is real, and whether or not he becomes “the next Vijay,” he’s already proving to be a leading voice in shaping Tamil cinema’s future.

From Thuppakki to Sarkar: AR Murugadoss’s Legacy Meets the Rise of Madharaasi

AR Murugadoss, one of Tamil cinema’s most commercially successful directors, has delivered multiple blockbusters over the years, including Thuppakki (2012), Kaththi (2014), and Sarkar (2018)—all starring Vijay—and now returns with Madharaasi (2025), this time teaming up with Sivakarthikeyan. Each film showcases a unique combination of star power and technical finesse. ## Thuppakki, with music by Harris Jayaraj and cinematography by Santosh Sivan, was one of the first Tamil films to gross over ₹100 crore, eventually earning ₹130 crore worldwide. The movie, which marked the third collaboration of AR Murugadoss and Vijay, has grossed over Rs 30 crore in Tamil Nadu on day one, thereby setting a huge benchmark in the state where it released in almost 650 screens. Sreekar Prasad, cinematographer Sudeep Elamon, and action director Kevin Kumar. Interestingly, the protagonist's role was originally pitched to Shah Rukh Khan nearly a decade ago, reflecting Murugadoss's long-standing pan-Indian vision. ## The film also reunites Vidyut Jammwal with Murugadoss after Thuppakki and includes a director cameo, following his tradition in earlier films. Behind-the-scenes footage has already teased Sivakarthikeyan’s intense action preparation, and the buzz around this project suggests it may represent the next evolution of Murugadoss’s cinematic legacy. ## While its box office performance is yet to be seen, Madharaasi is clearly positioned to be a high-stakes, technically ambitious venture that aims to bridge the blockbuster formula of his Vijay-led hits with a new-age, content-driven storytelling approach suited to today’s audiences. ## From redefining Tamil cinema’s box office standards with Thuppakki to scaling new commercial heights with Sarkar, A.R. Murugadoss has consistently blended mass appeal with cinematic craft. His films with Vijay not only delivered blockbuster earnings—each crossing the coveted ₹100 crore mark—but also set multiple records in opening-day collections, award wins, and overseas performance. With Madharaasi (2025), Murugadoss embarks on a fresh chapter alongside Sivakarthikeyan, bringing a new face to his signature high-octane storytelling. If history is any indicator, Madharaasi could very well be the next landmark in Tamil cinema’s evolving commercial narrative. ## Stay tuned... ##

Sivakarthikeyan’s Cinematic Shift: Ayalaan to Amaran, and the Rise of Madharaasi

Sivakarthikeyan's evolution in Tamil cinema has been marked by increasingly ambitious projects, notably Ayalaan, Amaran, and the upcoming Madharaasi. Released in January 2024 after years of delay, Ayalaan was a sci-fi fantasy directed by R. Ravikumar and featured Sivakarthikeyan alongside Rakul Preet Singh with music by A.R. Rahman. ## The film's novelty lay in its alien-centric plot and extensive VFX work, which took over four years to complete. Despite pacing criticisms, it found favour with family audiences and collected an estimated ₹75 crore globally, with around ₹50 crore from Tamil Nadu. ## In contrast, Amaran, released in October 2024, was a patriotic war biopic based on Major Mukund Varadarajan, directed by Rajkumar Periyasamy and co-starring Sai Pallavi. Produced by Kamal Haasan's Raaj Kamal Films International, it became a major commercial and critical success, grossing ₹333.67 crore worldwide. ## It broke multiple records, becoming the second-highest-grossing Tamil film of 2024 and the eighth-highest of all time in the language, with a strong emotional core that resonated widely. Interestingly, despite fewer screens, Amaran outperformed bigger-budget films in footfalls, with audiences and critics praising its heartfelt storytelling and war sequences. ## Here is a list of his notable movies that grossed 100 cr:  ## Doctor (2021) - ₹ 100.5 Cr ## Don: (2022) - ₹ 114 Cr ## Amaran (2024) - ₹ 333.67 Cr ##Now, anticipation surrounds Madharaasi, a psychological action thriller slated for release in September 2025.
