Mumbai, June 22 – A recent box office trend has surprised many in the trade, as a film that witnessed strong occupancy across multiple circuits ended its opening weekend with net collections lower than early tracking estimates. This is an unusual scenario, as gross tracking typically falls short of final net by around 10% due to spot bookings, offline sales, and single-screen data, which are not fully captured in advance data systems. ## To explain this better, consider a typical 100-seat screen. In most cinemas, around 10 seats are held offline by the theatre and are not available for online booking. These are either reserved for counter sales or held for operational flexibility. In almost all films with good demand, once 60–70 of the 90 open seats are filled, those remaining 10 held-back seats are also sold via the counter — pushing the final occupancy close to full. Our tracking system accounts for these patterns based on years of observed behavior across thousands of movies. ## However, in this particular case, despite visible occupancy reaching 60–70%, the 10 offline hold seats remained unsold in many shows. This led to a situation where our system counted them (as they usually convert), but the final reported net collections turned out lower than expected. ## To put it in perspective, our tracking system recorded a gross of approximately ₹25 crore for the day. After adjusting for GST, this would normally translate to ₹21–21.5 crore net. For most commercial films, spot bookings and offline sales usually push the final figure even higher, to around ₹23–24 crore. However, the reported net in this case was just ₹20 crore — a significant gap that contradicts historical trends. ## The likely explanation is a large share of the shows being booked in advance through bulk, corporate, or institutional tie-ups — including NGOs, school screenings, or employee events. These bookings fulfill a majority of the theatre’s capacity, but the remaining offline hold seats may not get utilized, as the show is already “occupied” on paper. This breaks the normal behavior pattern our system relies on — where high demand drives complete conversion, including counter sales. ## But if there is no evidence of bulk or corporate booking at such scale, and offline sales still don’t occur despite good occupancy, it leads to a more serious concern — intentional underreporting. ## Though difficult to verify without internal GST and invoicing access, such underreporting has been discussed in industry circles, particularly when it comes to: ## Lowering tax liabilities, ## Reducing revenue-sharing obligations with exhibitors, ## Or managing payout cycles with distributors and partners. ## Such practices are risky, especially with digital ticketing and real-time settlement now common across major chains. However, in certain setups — including some single screens, backend deals, and unmonitored bulk bookings — they can still be executed with limited oversight. ## This is not a failure of tracking logic, but a rare deviation in audience behavior and/or reporting structure. Box Office: 'Sitaare Zameen Par' Opening Day Early Estimates

Mumbai, June 20 - Superstar Aamir Khan's comedy drama Sitaare Zameen Par has taken a decent start at the domestic box office. The film picked up well towards the evening and night shows, and managed to cross the double-digit mark by a decent margin. ## According to early estimates, SZP has scored in the range of 11-12 crores net collection. It was also released in Telugu and Tamil, in which, it has earned around 15-20 lakh collection. The trade was expecting an 8-9 crores opening, so considering that, it is a decent start. ## The opening of Sitaare Zameen Par is almost in the same range as Aamir's last film, Laal Singh Chaddha, which scored around 11.75 crores net in all versions. Another similarity between both films is that their genre are the same, and both performed best in urban centres. ## The audience word of mouth for SZP is on the positive side, and the advances for the weekend are much better, which indicates solid growth on Saturday and Sunday. Ajay Devgn's 'Son of Sardaar 2' To Have A Solo Release As Maddock Films' 'Param Sundari' Postponed

Mumbai, June 20 - Bollywood star Ajay Devgn's romantic action comedy Son of Sardaar 2 is reportedly getting a solo release as Maddock Films' romantic comedy Param Sundari is set to be delayed, according to the report by Peepingmoon.com. ## There had been speculation about the postponement of Param Sundari for some time, but the makers recently announced that it would be released on July 25, on the same day SOS2 hits the big screen. But the Maddock has now decided to postpone Sidharth Malhotra and Janhvi Kapoor's film. ## Producer Dinesh Vijan of Maddock believes that Param Sundari has a strong chance of succeeding at the box office, and he doesn’t want it to get lost in a crowded release schedule. Both SOS2 and Param Sundari are in the same genre, but the former has more face value due to star power and franchise. ## Vijan has strategically opted to reposition the film to ensure it receives the attention it deserves, both for its narrative and its music. There were rumours about the postponement, but the makers have officially re-confirmed the date with the first look poster. ## The first look poster shows Ajay Devgn standing on two tanks in his Sardaar look. Ajay Devgn's 'Shaitaan 2' Officially In Works For 2026 Production

Mumbai, June 18 - After scoring a big success with Shaitaan, which was the remake of the Gujarati movie Vash, Bollywood star Ajay Devgn is all set to thrill the audience with its sequel. The first film also starred R. Madhavan, Jyothika, and Janaki Bodiwala. ## According to the latest report by Peepingmoon.com, Shaitaan is being developed into a full-fledged franchise with a sequel officially in the works. Unlike the first movie, Shaitaan 2 won't be the remake of Vash Level 2, which is scheduled to hit the big screen in August this year. ## Slated to go on floors in the first quarter of 2026, the sequel will reportedly shift its setting to Konkan, a region in Maharashtra known as a hub for black magic practices, and it will be an original script. Vikas Bahl will return to direct Shaitaan 2. ## Aamil Keeyan Khan has been developing the sequel since last year, and he is believed to have nearly finished the scripting, with only minor refinements remaining. Mumbai, June 17 - Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan has often shown his love for big screen cinema, and he is doing the same for his upcoming film Sitaare Zameen Par by protecting its exclusive theatrical window, even at the cost of crores of rupees. ## It is known to all that Aamir has not decided to sell the film's post-theatrical OTT rights, as he wants people to watch the film on the big screen without having any idea when it will be available on home media for free. While his decision is being cheered by the trade, he has sacrificed a huge sum to stand firm on his decision. ## According to trade analyst Komal Nahta, Aamir has turned down a huge 120 crore offer from Amazon Prime Video for the film's post-theatrical OTT release. The decision he has taken is not because he wanted more money from OTT platforms, but because he has decided to try and change the game. ## Normally, the films are made available on OTT after an 8-weeks of their theatrical release, and this is something Aamir is completely against. He believes that there should be no fixed window for any movie and that they should be played in theatres as long as possible. ## In the post-COVID-19 world, filmmakers started having pre-agreements with OTT platforms with a fixed theatrical window. Trade believes that this is one of the main reasons footfalls have reduced in cinemas, especially for mid-size films, as there is a section of audience which is ready to wait for 8 weeks to watch them for 'free', which was not the case before Covid-19. ## This is something Aamir wants to change, and he is leading by example by not selling OTT rights of Sitaare Zameen Par, and has vowed to do the same with his upcoming movies.
