Based on the true events of the exodus of Kashmiri Hindus in the early 1990s due to the Kashmir Insurgency, TKF has done very well at the box office on the first day. It grossed approx. Rs. 3.20 crores in India despite a very low number of screens.
The official Twitter handle of Directorate of Information, Public Relations and Languages Department, Haryana has tweeted about the tax-free declaration, and tweeted, "Haryana sarkar ne film The Kashmir Files ko rajya mein tax free kar diya hai".
