Sunny Deol and Rajkumar Santoshi Revive Batwara 1947 After a Sixteen Year Battle Against Industry Skepticism

BY SACNILK

Batwara 1947 is scheduled to arrive in theaters on August 14, 2026, ending a professional hiatus between Sunny Deol and Rajkumar Santoshi that dates back to the mid-nineties. While the duo was once the most formidable force in Hindi cinema with classics like Ghayal and Damini, the journey of this specific project has been a difficult one, spanning roughly 16 years of development hell and industry skepticism. The 16-year timeline began around 2010 when the duo first attempted to pitch Batwara 1947 to major studios. At that time, both the actor and the director were navigating a difficult phase in their careers, marked by several box-office disappointments. This led to a harsh industry perception where the pairing was labeled as not saleable. Financiers were hesitant to back a veteran team that had not delivered a major commercial success in years, and the project was effectively shelved as no big banner was willing to take the risk. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) A significant hurdle was the nature of the script itself. While producers were pressuring Sunny Deol to stick to loud, mass-market action films, Batwara 1947 was envisioned as a realistic period drama based on a celebrated play about the emotional trauma of the Partition. Studios viewed a serious, art-house leaning narrative as a massive financial risk, especially when the lead star was struggling with his theatrical pull. For over a decade, the project remained stagnant because the market demanded a version of Sunny Deol that didn't align with the director's grounded vision. The actor's filmography during this 16-year period reflected this struggle. Projects like Singh Saab the Great and his own directorial effort Ghayal Once Again underperformed at the box office. Later films like Poster Boys and Blank were also commercially disappointing, further fueling the narrative that his era as a bankable lead was fading. Without a major hit to his name, the ambitious Batwara 1947 appeared to be a lost cause, existing only in trade discussions rather than active production. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) The trajectory shifted entirely with the massive success of Gadar 2, which proved there was still a huge, loyal audience for the veteran actor. This turnaround was further solidified earlier this year with the release of Border 2, which also performed exceptionally well at the box office. These consecutive hits restored his position as a bankable superstar, providing the necessary commercial momentum to revive Batwara 1947 after years of stagnation. Recognizing this renewed market demand, Aamir Khan stepped in under his banner to finance the project, finally allowing the director the creative independence to pursue a realistic and serious tone without the pressure of typical commercial tropes. Batwara 1947 faces a direct clash with Awarapan 2, which is currently leading the race in terms of advance bookings. While the competitor has secured a stronger start with initial ticket sales, the Sunny Deol starrer is positioned as a grounded, realistic drama that might take a bit longer to find its full momentum. Since the film avoids the loud tropes of a typical commercial entertainer, it will be solely dependent on positive word of mouth to prove its worth and draw in the larger family audience over the holiday weekend. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) With Aamir Khan backing the project, the production scale was elevated without compromising the artistic integrity of the story. This allowed for a realistic recreation of the 1947 landscape and a cast that prioritized performance over mass appeal, including the return of Preity Zinta. The film is now a reality because a historic box-office turnaround revived a script that had been rejected for over a decade.

Awarapan 2 Dominates Batwara 1947 in 8 PM Advance Booking Update; Emraan Hashmi Sequel Eyes Strong Independence Day Opening

BY SACNILK

The Independence Day box office is heating up, and we now have a much clearer picture of how the high-stakes clash between Emraan Hashmis Awarapan 2 and Sunny Deols Batwara 1947 is unfolding. As of 8:00 PM tonight, August 11, the advance booking numbers suggest that the 19-year rematch between these two veteran stars is leaning heavily in favor of the Awarapan sequel. While Sunny Deols Apne beat the original Awarapan back in 2007, the cult following of Shivam Pandit seems to be driving a massive wave of momentum for Hashmi this time around. If we look at the national cinema chains—PVR, INOX, and Cinepolis—Awarapan 2 is currently leading the race by a significant margin. By the 8:00 PM update, the film had already sold around 20,300 tickets, resulting in a total gross of roughly 86 lakh across more than 1,140 shows. PVR has been the primary driver, accounting for roughly 10,000 tickets and nearly 46 lakh in gross. INOX followed with about 6,500 tickets and 26 lakh, while Cinepolis added around 3,800 tickets for a gross of 14 lakh. In contrast, Batwara 1947 has struggled to find similar early traction, selling about 4,900 tickets for a total gross of nearly 20 lakh. Within these major chains, PVR contributed 3,000 tickets and 13 lakh, INOX added 1,600 tickets and 6 lakh, and Cinepolis rounded off the figures with approximately 400 tickets and 1 lakh. Despite having a similar show count of 1,120 in these chains, Deols period drama is seeing much lower occupancy levels. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) The All-India advance booking figures for Day 1 tell a similar story. Awarapan 2 has grossed over 70 lakh from 21,160 tickets across nearly 2,700 tracked shows, maintaining an average ticket price of 265 rupees. If we include blocked seats, the potential gross already jumps to 1.9 crore. Batwara 1947, meanwhile, has grossed about 24 lakh from nearly 7,000 tickets across more than 2,500 shows. Even with blocked seats factored in at 88.57 lakh, it remains significantly behind its competitor. These numbers highlight the strategic advantage of Awarapan 2s U/A certification and its 2-hour 20-minute runtime, which makes it a more accessible choice for families compared to the serious, A-rated Partition drama of Batwara 1947. The digital buzz on BookMyShow continues to reflect this growing disparity, with Awarapan 2 now crossing 298,000 interest likes compared to roughly 131,000 for Batwara 1947. Looking at the actual ticket sales on the platform, Awarapan 2 had already recorded 7,020 tickets sold yesterday, August 10. The momentum has picked up further today, August 11, with thousands of tickets being booked every hour. Even with Spider-Man still occupying premium evening slots and limiting screen availability, the sequel is managing to maintain a very steady pace as it approaches its release date. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) The off-screen distribution battle is equally fierce. While distributors of Batwara 1947 have been pushing for a monopoly on single screens, the ground-level data is forcing exhibitors to rethink. Given the current trajectory, we can begin to make some early opening day predictions. If this momentum continues to build toward Friday, Awarapan 2 is looking at a potential double-digit opening, likely in the range of 14 to 17 crore. Batwara 1947, despite its prestigious pedigree and the Aamir Khan production tag, currently appears headed for a single-digit start, possibly between 8 and 10 crore, unless there is a massive surge in walk-in audiences over the holiday weekend. Ultimately, the battle of August 14 is coming down to a choice between nostalgia and prestige. While Batwara 1947 is a heavy-hitting drama from director Rajkumar Santoshi, audiences seem more inclined toward the emotional, thriller-driven world of Emraan Hashmi. With three days still left before the first show, all eyes will be on whether Sunny Deol can bridge this gap or if Awarapan 2 will secure its status as the primary choice for the Independence Day weekend.

Sai Pallavi has also earned praise for her graceful performance as Sita. Ramayana Part 1 Trailer Wows Yet Leaves Fans Disappointed; Here Is Why

BY SACNILK

Mumbai, July 30 - The highly anticipated trailer for Ramayana Part 1 has received a positive response from audiences, with fans praising its stunning visuals, grand scale, and impressive casting. Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, the epic has generated massive excitement ahead of its release, with many calling it one of the most visually ambitious films ever produced in Indian cinema. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) Among the biggest highlights of the trailer are the lead performances. Ranbir Kapoor has earned widespread appreciation for his calm and divine screen presence as Lord Rama, while Sai Pallavi's graceful portrayal of Sita has also impressed viewers. Yash's menacing avatar as Ravana has created significant buzz and left audiences eager to see more of the antagonist in the film. However, one notable omission from the trailer has disappointed a section of fans –– Sunny Deol's Hanuman. Despite being one of the film's most anticipated characters, Hanuman does not make an appearance in the trailer. Many viewers took to social media to express that even a brief glimpse of Sunny Deol in the iconic role could have elevated the trailer to an even greater level. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) That said, the makers may have deliberately chosen to keep Hanuman's look under wraps. According to reports, Sunny Deol will have a limited role in Ramayana Part 1, reportedly appearing only during the film's climactic portions, while Ramayana Part 2 will feature the full-length role of one of the Chiranjeevis. By withholding his first look, makers may be preserving one of the franchise's biggest reveals for the theatrical experience and building anticipation for the sequel. Overall, the trailer has achieved exactly what it set out to do –– ignite excitement for Ramayana with its breathtaking visuals, faithful casting, and epic storytelling. While fans may have hoped for a glimpse of Sunny Deol's Hanuman, the decision to keep the character a surprise could ultimately make his on-screen debut even more impactful when the film arrives in cinemas. Part 1 is scheduled to release on Diwali this year. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({})

From Ranbir Kapoor To Yash: Ramayana Stars Gear Up For Multiple Releases in the Span of Three Months

BY SACNILK

Mumbai, July 29 - The cast of director Nitesh Tiwari's Ramayana Part 1 is not only gearing up for one of the biggest Indian films ever made but is also preparing for an incredibly busy theatrical window. Several of the film's lead actors have two major releases within roughly three months, either before or after Ramayana Part 1, ensuring they remain in the spotlight throughout the festive season and into early 2027. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) Ranbir Kapoor, who plays Lord Rama, will first headline Ramayana Part 1, slated for a grand Diwali 2026 release, before reuniting with Sanjay Leela Bhansali for Love & War, which is scheduled to hit theatres on January 21, 2027. The gap between the two releases is less than three months, giving the actor back-to-back event films in completely different genres. Yash, who essays Ravana in Ramayana, will kick off his theatrical run with the action thriller Toxic on August 26, 2026, which will be his first release in 4 years since the mega blockbuster KGF: Chapter 2. He will then return to the big screen during the Diwali season with Ramayana Part 1, making it two of the year's biggest pan-Indian releases within a short span. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) Sunny Deol is also set for a packed release schedule. The actor will first arrive with the period drama Batwara 1947 on August 14, 2026, before portraying Hanuman in Ramayana Part 1 during Diwali. He also has the emotional drama, Gabru, ready for release. Similarly, Sai Pallavi will be seen in Dhanush-fronted OM Chapter 1 on October 16, 2026, followed shortly by her portrayal of Sita in Ramayana Part 1. With blockbuster titles such as Toxic, Batwara 1947, OM, Ramayana Part 1, and Love & War arriving within a compact three-month window, the ensemble cast of Ramayana is poised to dominate the box office conversation. It is rare for so many stars from a single film to have multiple high-profile theatrical releases clustered so closely together, making the final months of 2026 and the beginning of 2027 particularly significant for Indian cinema.

Nitesh Tiwari Confirms Cliffhanger Ending For Ramayana Part 1, As New Trailer Release Date Revealed

BY SACNILK

Mumbai, July 27 - The excitement surrounding director Nitesh Tiwari's Ramayana: Part 1 continues to grow as fresh details about the film's ending and its long-awaited trailer have surfaced. During the film's panel at San Diego Comic-Con, the filmmaker confirmed that the first instalment will conclude on a major cliffhanger, setting the stage for the second chapter. While it may not be a shocking part for Indian audiences, it may definitely lead to massive excitement among international audiences. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) Comparing the narrative structure to epic two-part sagas, Tiwari explained that the story naturally demanded a split, allowing the first film to build towards an emotionally charged ending rather than rushing through the entire epic. The update comes just days after the film's trailer was unexpectedly postponed from its originally planned global launch. Producer Namit Malhotra had announced that the trailer would be delayed, citing unforeseen circumstances, despite it being scheduled to debut at Comic-Con before releasing online worldwide. The makers have confirmed that the trailer will now be dropped online on Thursday, July 30, at 4:15 AM, and will be attached to Spider-Man: Brand New Day print in cinemas from July 30, giving audiences their first full look at the ambitious epic on the big screen. As already made official, Ramayana will be distributed by Sony Pictures, the studio behind Brand New Day, internationally, while Dharma Production will release it in India. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) The two-part format will allow the makers to explore the Ramayana with greater depth, while the cliffhanger ending is expected to leave audiences eagerly awaiting the conclusion. Ranbir Kapoor, who portrays Lord Ram, recently revealed that some of the film's biggest moments, including the face-off between Lord Ram and Yash's Ravana, have not yet been filmed, underscoring the massive scale and ongoing production of the duology. Yash, meanwhile, has described portraying Ravana as one of the most challenging roles of his career, promising a fresh interpretation of the iconic antagonist. Produced by Namit Malhotra and Yash, Ramayana stars Ranbir Kapoor, Sai Pallavi, Yash, Sunny Deol, and Ravi Dubey in key roles. The first film is slated for a Diwali 2026 release, with Part 2 scheduled to arrive during Diwali 2027, making it one of the most ambitious Indian film franchises ever mounted.

Awarapan 2 vs Batwara 1947 Box Office: Emraan Hashmi's Film Looks Set To Win Opening Day Battle Against Sunny Deol's Partition Drama

BY SACNILK

Mumbai, August 10 - The Independence Day weekend is set to witness an exciting clash at the Hindi box office as Emraan Hashmi's Awarapan 2 takes on Sunny Deol's Batwara 1947 on August 14, 2026. While both films belong to different genres and are targeting different audiences, the early trade buzz suggests that Awarapan 2 has gained a clear advantage ahead of the release. Though the situation could change once bookings begin and marketing campaigns reach their peak, the sequel is currently leading the race. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) According to early trade projections, Awarapan 2 is expected to open in the 15 crore net range at the Indian box office. The sequel has generated strong excitement thanks to the cult status of the 2007 original, which found a massive fan following after its theatrical release. Its teaser, music, and nostalgia factor have resonated well with audiences, making it the favourite to secure the biggest opening of Emraan Hashmi's career. On the other hand, Batwara 1947 is currently tracking for an opening day collection in the 5-7 crore net range. Directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and backed by Aamir Khan, the period drama stars Sunny Deol, Preity Zinta, Karan Deol, and Shabana Azmi. While the film has the advantage of releasing during the Independence Day holiday and could benefit from positive word of mouth, its pre-release buzz is presently behind that of Awarapan 2, resulting in a comparatively modest opening-day projection. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) It is important to note that these are early trade estimates, and the box office scenario can change significantly closer to release depending on trailer response, promotional campaigns, advance bookings, and audience sentiment. However, based on the current momentum, Emraan Hashmi's romantic action sequel is clearly winning the opening-day battle, with Batwara 1947 likely relying on strong reviews and positive audience reception to bridge the gap over the extended weekend.

Fresh Details Emerge On Sony's Ambitious Plans For Nitesh Tiwari's Ramayana

BY SACNILK

Mumbai, July 24 - Nitesh Tiwari's Ramayana has taken another significant step towards becoming a global cinematic event. Sony Pictures Entertainment has officially come on board as the international distributor for the two-part epic. Interestingly, the agreement is said to be a Free of Cost (FOC) distribution deal, meaning Sony has not paid an upfront acquisition fee to the producers. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) Instead, the Hollywood studio will invest heavily in the film's worldwide marketing campaign, underlining its confidence in the project's global appeal. According to a report by Pinkvilla, Sony has committed USD 25 million (approximately 235 crore) towards the international marketing and publicity of Ramayana. The producers will contribute an additional USD 15 million (approximately 140 crore), bringing the film's total marketing expenditure to USD 40 million (approximately 375 crore). Such a promotional budget is virtually unheard of for an Indian film and reflects the makers' ambition of launching Ramayana on the scale of a major Hollywood blockbuster. The report further states that Ramayana: Part One is expected to be mounted on a budget of around 1,500 crore, including production and marketing costs. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) Meanwhile, the combined budget for both instalments is estimated to be close to 3,000 crore, making it comfortably one of the most expensive film franchises ever produced in Indian cinema. With Sony handling the international rollout and Karan Johar's Dharma Productions releasing the film in India, the makers are aiming for an unprecedented global theatrical launch. On the release front, Ramayana: Part One is currently being lined up for Diwali 2026. While Diwali falls on November 8, the makers are understood to be considering October 30 and November 6 as the two potential release dates, as reported earlier. The earlier date is reportedly being preferred to secure an IMAX release, as Godzilla Minus Zero is expected to occupy IMAX screens from November 6 onwards. An official announcement regarding the final release date is expected in the coming weeks.
