Youtube Records: The First Indian Music Video To Reach 100M, 200M, 500M, & 1B Views On Youtube

Mumbai, August 2, 2021: Ever since the online video sharing and social media platform, Youtube has launched, it has become a huge source of income for independent music artists. Launched in 2005 by Steve Chen, Chad Hurley, and Jawed Karim, Youtube is the most visited website worldwide after Google, with over one billion monthly users.
In India, Youtube wasn't as popular as it was internationally in the earlier days. However, after 2015, the platform started picking pace in India and becomes so popular among youths, be it as consumers or content creators. Now, Indian videos are getting views in billions and are among the most viewed videos worldwide. So far, 29 Indian videos have crossed 1 billion views marks including children's or non-music videos.
Among the music videos, 11 videos have crossed the 1 billion marks on their official youtube channels. However, it was Dhanush's "Why This Kolaveri Di" from 2012 Tamil psychological thriller film, "3", which tested the first success among the Indian music videos on TY. Released on 16 November 2011, the song instantly became popular on social networking sites for its quirky "Tanglish" (portmanteau word of Tamil and English) lyrics. It became the first Indian music video to reach 100 million mark on YT. Currently, it has over 285 million views.
If "Why This Kolaveri Di" was first to get 100 million views, it was "Dheere Dheere" by Yo Yo Honey Singh become the first Indian music video to cross 200 million views. The song, featuring Hrithik Roshan and Sonam Kapoor, is nearing 500 million mark on T-Series YT channel. It was released on 2 September 2015.
Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif featuring "Swag Se Swagat" from Tiger Zinda Hai, became the first Indian music video to cross 500 million views on Youtube. Sung by Vishal Dadlani, and Neha Bhasin, the song instantly became popular for it music, which was composed by Vishal and Shekhar.
In December 2019, T-Series backed popular Punjabi number "Laung Laachi" starring Ammy Virk, Neeru Bajwa, and Amberdeep Singh created history and reached a rare 1 billion mark and became the first Indian MV to reach the milestone. Composed by Aman Jay, written by Harmanjit, with music by Gurmeet Singh and sung by Mannat Noor, the 2018 song took the Internet by storm.
