Worldwide Box Office Projected To Reach $22B In 2021: Analysts

Mumbai, October 26 - The global box office has witnessed a sharp jump in the second half of 2021, especially from October onwards. Gower Street Analytics, which projected the worldwide box office at $20.2 billion in mid-September, has now revised its projection to be up by over $1 billion to $21.6B in 2021.

The revised global box office projection came after the solid response to October titles including MGM/Eon/Universal's James Bond "No Time To Die" ($525M), Sony/Marvel's "Venom: Let There Be Carnage" ($352M), Warner Bros/Legendary's "Dune" ($223M), and China's "The Battle At Lake Changjin" ($830M). Gower Street further anticipates potential growth and that could take the global box office to around $22B in 2021.

Gower Street's $21.6B projection for the year 2021 is up by 80% from the pandemic hit 2020 but still is 49% behind 2019's global box office tally. The latest estimates, however, narrowed the gap from a previous projection of -52%.

The box office projection for the month of October has been increased to $3.2 billion from an original estimate of $2.5 billion. This would put October business just 4% behind the average of the three pre-pandemic years (2017-2019) for the month. No previous month in 2021 has performed better than 40% behind the three-year average.

Gower Street has projected China to contribute most with a 34% projection in 2021 while, overall, Asia Pacific (APAC) is projected to contribute 52% in the global box office. Domestic (North America) is projected to contribute 22% of the worldwide box office. Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) are projected to finish with 22% while the Latin American box office is projected to contribute 5% of the total box office.

This is the final estimate Gower Street plans to publish for 2021 before actuals are announced in early January.

Stay tuned...

Obsession Box Office: Three Horror Films That Grossed Over $100 Million Worldwide With Less Than A $1 Million Budget

BY SACNILK

Mumbai, June 9 - The horror genre has long been known as one of the safest bets in Hollywood. While big-budget blockbusters often require hundreds of millions of dollars to break even, several horror films have delivered extraordinary returns despite being made on incredibly low budgets. The remarkable box office run of Obsession has once again highlighted how low-cost genre films can generate massive profits when they connect with audiences. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) Over the years, a handful of horror movies have achieved what seemed impossible, crossing the coveted $100 million worldwide mark despite being produced for less than $1 million. These films relied on strong concepts, innovative storytelling, and word-of-mouth publicity rather than expensive visual effects or star-studded casts. The most famous example remains The Blair Witch Project (1999). Made for an estimated budget of around $60,000, the found-footage horror phenomenon became a global sensation and grossed approximately $248 million worldwide, as per Box Office Mojo. Its unique marketing campaign convinced many viewers that the events depicted in the film were real, helping it become one of the most profitable movies ever made. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) Another remarkable success story is Paranormal Activity (2007). Produced for just $15,000, the supernatural thriller revolutionised modern horror and eventually earned more than $193 million worldwide. The film's minimalist approach, combined with audience-driven marketing campaigns, transformed it into a cultural phenomenon and launched a major franchise. Obsession is the third film to join this rank. Made on a budget of $750,000, the film continues its impressive theatrical run, already grossing over $225 million worldwide, including $5 million in India. These examples serve as a reminder that in the horror genre, creativity often matters more than budget. While blockbuster spectacles dominate headlines, films like The Blair Witch Project, Paranormal Activity, and Obsession show that a modest investment can sometimes yield extraordinary box office results.

Karuppu is now entering its fourth week of theatrical release, and as it reaches Day 25, the focus has largely moved from its daily earnings toward the overall milestones it is approaching. While daily numbers naturally slow down during a long theatrical run, the film's sustained performance has put it in a position where it is now chasing significant records on digital booking platforms. The interest levels remain steady enough to suggest that the film is still a point of discussion as it heads toward its final phase in cinemas. Looking at the ticket sales data from BookMyShow, the numbers reveal a high level of sustained engagement. Starting with a pre-sale of 75,000 tickets, the film enjoyed a massive first week with over 2.8 million tickets sold. While the volume has naturally tapered, the fourth weekend showed surprising resilience. Here is the detailed breakdown of the ticket sales trajectory so far: Pre Sales- 75K 1st Week- 2.85M 2nd Week- 1.10M 3rd Week- 374K 4th Friday- 15.38K 4th Saturday- 32.22K 4th Sunday- 26.1K 4th Monday- 6.79K Total Tickets Sold- 4,473,790 (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) With a cumulative total of approximately 4.47 million tickets sold on the platform, Karuppu is now on the verge of joining the elite top 5 list of Tamil cinema. It is currently trailing the fifth-placed film, The GOAT, by roughly 40,000 tickets. Entering this list would be a major achievement, though time is of the essence. The film is scheduled to premiere on OTT on June 12, which typically slows down theatrical ticket movement. Whether it can bridge this small gap in the next few days is the main point of interest for now. This represents a 69.7 percent drop from the previous day's net collection of 1.75 crore, which is a standard stabilization for a weekday this late in the cycle. This latest addition brings the total India net to 193.93 crore and the domestic gross to 224.15 crore. Internationally, the film added 0.10 crore on Monday, taking the total overseas gross to 80.70 crore. Collectively, the worldwide gross has officially crossed the 300-crore mark, currently standing at 304.85 crore. In the national theater chains for Monday, the performance was led by PVR with approximately 1,400 tickets sold, resulting in a gross of 1.8 lakhs. INOX followed with about 1,000 tickets sold for a gross of 1.2 lakhs, while Cinepolis contributed a gross of around 25,000 from 200 tickets. Regionally, Chennai reported a healthy occupancy of 29.3 percent on Monday, while Coimbatore saw 22 percent occupancy, showing that the core audience in Tamil Nadu is still showing up for shows. As the film approaches its digital premiere, its theatrical run has already established it as a significant commercial success. The journey from a strong opening to crossing the 300-crore worldwide milestone reflects the broad appeal the story has had across markets. While the OTT release on June 12 might bring the theatrical curtains down, the potential to enter the all-time top 5 ticket sales list remains a possibility over the coming days.

Peddi Day 5 Box Office: India Gross Reaches 14.31 Cr; Ram Charan Starrer Ranks No. 7 Among Tollywood's Highest 5-Day Totals

BY SACNILK

The latest cinematic offering Peddi has been the talk of the town since its release. Driven by the sheer star power of Ram Charan, the film hit the big screen with a level of anticipation that has been building steadily for months. Following a strong opening weekend, all eyes were on how the film would perform during its crucial first Monday test, a day that typically determines the long-term sustainability of a big-budget project. On its fifth day, Peddi recorded a gross collection of 14.31 crore across 7,905 shows in India. This figure marks a shift from Sunday’s gross of 38.24 crore, representing a standard stabilization trend that typically follows a high-performing opening weekend. With this latest addition, the film has reached a total India gross of 201.92 crore, while the net collection stands at 169.70 crore so far. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) Looking at the national theater chains for Monday, the performance was led by INOX and PVR. In PVR, the film sold roughly 5,900 tickets, resulting in a gross of 17.8 lakhs across 790 shows with an occupancy of 4 percent. INOX followed closely with 6,100 tickets sold and a gross of 17.0 lakhs across 650 shows at 4.5 percent occupancy. Cinepolis contributed 7.6 lakhs gross from 2,600 tickets across 400 shows. In total, these top three chains accounted for 14,600 tickets and a combined gross of 42.4 lakhs from 1,840 shows. The cumulative India net collection of 169.70 crore is largely driven by the Telugu version, which has contributed 153.90 crore to the total. The Hindi-dubbed version serves as the second-largest market with 13.30 crore, while the remaining languages account for a smaller portion of the business. Specifically, the Tamil version has netted 1.35 crore, followed by Kannada at 0.91 crore and Malayalam at 0.24 crore. This distribution shows that the film's primary pull remains concentrated in the Telugu states, though it has established a footprint in the Hindi belt as well. Peddi recorded 142,000 tickets sold for its first Monday. Looking at how other major titles performed, Pushpa 2 holds the top spot with 750,000 tickets, while Kalki 2898 AD and Salaar had recorded 488,000 and 473,000 tickets respectively. Peddi's Monday numbers are currently trending in a similar range to Devara, which had sold 161,000 tickets on its first Monday. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) In the Telugu market, Peddi currently holds the 13th spot for the highest first Monday collections. It narrowly missed out on the top 10 by a margin of 77 lakhs, as the 10th-positioned film, Hanuman, had earned 11.17 crore. However, the film's initial momentum is clearly visible in the cumulative charts, where it has secured the 7th position among the highest-ever first five-day collections in Tollywood. This strong start has allowed the film to stay competitive with some of the biggest blockbusters in the industry. In Vizag specifically, the film saw an impressive overall occupancy of 57 percent on Monday. In contrast, the Tamil market remains a bit slower, with Chennai reporting around 18 percent occupancy. The state-wise gross breakdown for Day 5 is as follows: APTG: 11.00 Cr Tamil Nadu: 0.35 Cr Karnataka: 1.15 Cr Kerala: 0.06 Cr Rest of India: 1.75 Cr The total daily gross across all states stood at 14.31 crore for Monday. As the film moves further into the week, the goal will be to maintain these double-digit figures to ensure a healthy second-weekend jump. With no major competition in its primary markets, the film has a clear window to keep adding to its box office kitty.

Directed by Buchi Babu Sana in his second outing after Uppena, the film stars Charan as a spirited villager who uses sports to bring his community together, with Janhvi Kapoor playing the lead female role. While there was plenty of interest in the project following the actor's previous success, the actual box office trend is showing a more measured pace as it transitions into the working week. After a solid opening weekend, Peddi has a good hold domestically on Monday, with early estimates suggesting around 14 crores gross collection. On Monday, it crossed 200 crores in India and became Ram Charan's second film after RRR to achieve the feat. Worldwide, the film has touched the 250 Crore mark, emerging as the actor's second highest-grossing film. While reaching this figure quickly is a notable benchmark for any major production, the momentum will need to remain very consistent to meet the high stakes involved with a project of this scale. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) The film is currently drawing a loyal audience in its primary markets, though its ability to sustain this across the upcoming weekdays will be the real test of its theatrical life. Examining the Monday data, the film earned approximately 14 Crore gross in India on its fifth day, which is around 55% per cent drop from the Friday earnings of 31.50 Crore. For a film occupying 8,000 shows nationwide, this growth is stable but perhaps less aggressive than what the initial buzz might have suggested. It indicates that while the core fan base is turning up, the broader mass appeal is still being established in several regions. To provide a clearer picture of the domestic performance, the total India gross collection now stands at around 169.75 Crore. When factoring in the gross amounts, the total India gross reaches 202 Crore. The Telugu market remains the primary driver of these numbers, while the contributions from other language versions are providing a necessary but slower build-up to the overall total. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) The international performance adds another layer to the analysis. On its fifth day, the film brought in an estimated 1 Crore from overseas markets, taking the total international gross to 47 Crore so far. This brings the worldwide gross collection for Peddi to 249 Crore. The overseas performance of the film is concerning as it is showing very faded momentum after the good opening day. Top 5 Box Office Weekend Grossers (June 5-7): Peddi Dominates As Obsession Explodes Amid Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai's Decent Opening

BY SACNILK

Mumbai, June 8 - The June 5-7 weekend delivered a healthy mix of blockbuster opening and strong holdover performances at the Indian box office. Leading the pack was Ram Charan's Peddi, which emerged as the undisputed winner of the weekend with a sensational 104.50 crore gross during its Friday to Sunday frame. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) After the opening weekend collection of 82.50 crores gross (including premieres), the sports action drama remained solid in the Friday to Sunday frame, dominating the market share by already emerging as one of Ram Charan's biggest grossers at the Indian box office, with a 4-day Indian gross collection of around 187 crores. Meanwhile, David Dhawan and Varun Dhawan's Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai scored a decent opening weekend. The romantic comedy opened to negative to mixed reviews, but somehow managed to stay steady over the weekend. The film took the opening of 9 crore gross and remained flat on Saturday before the big jump on Sunday for a respectable weekend. The film's fate lies in Monday's hold, which is crucial for its box office success. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) The biggest talking point of the weekend, however, was the phenomenal hold displayed by Obsession. The horror thriller grossed a stunning 21 crore in its second weekend, recording a massive jump of 125% from the opening frame and proving that positive word-of-mouth is driving its box office run. The film has quickly transformed into one of the season's surprise success stories and is expected to continue performing strongly in the coming days. Rounding out the top five were Blast and Deool Band 2. The action entertainer Blast earned 11.50 crore over the weekend, while the Marathi blockbuster Deool Band 2 added another 8.45 crore to its tally. Together, the five films generated over 175+ crores gross at the domestic box office in the June 5-7 frame, making the first weekend of June one of the strongest periods at the box office this year. Bhooth Bangla 8th Weekend: Movie Collects 0.37 Cr; Set to Finish as Akshay Kumar's 3rd Highest Post-Covid Grosser

It is quite impressive to see how Bhooth Bangla has settled into a remarkably long run as it concludes its eighth weekend in theaters. This horror-comedy marks the highly anticipated reunion of Akshay Kumar and director Priyadarshan, a duo that has historically defined the genre in Hindi cinema. The film follows a familiar yet engaging spooky-funny premise that has clearly struck a chord with the family audience. While the box office windows have become increasingly congested with new arrivals like Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai taking over the majority of screens, this veteran performer is showing incredible grit to stay relevant more than fifty days after its release. Analyzing the cumulative data for the eighth weekend, we see a movie that is making the most of its remaining 623 shows. The weekend began on Day 50 with a low of 0.07 Crore net, but as Saturday arrived, the film found its footing with a 42.9 percent jump to reach 0.10 Crore. The real surprise came on Sunday, where it recorded a massive 100 percent growth to collect 0.20 Crore net. Over these three days, the film maintained an average occupancy that climbed from 13 percent on Friday to a peak of 28 percent on Sunday, proving that there is still a dedicated audience seeking out this specific title during their holiday breaks. Over the eighth weekend, more than 1,900 tickets were sold across PVR, INOX, and Cinepolis. On Sunday alone, the chains contributed significantly to the footfalls; PVR saw 690 tickets sold, followed by 400 at INOX and 130 at Cinepolis. These rounded figures show that even with a reduced footprint, the film is maintaining a presence in premium urban centers, helping it edge closer to the final stages of its run. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) When we look at the global picture, the total India gross has now climbed to 215.17 Crore, while the India net total stands at 181.67 Crore. With a steady overseas gross contribution of 53.75 Crore, the cumulative worldwide total has now reached a monumental 268.92 Crore. This journey has involved a staggering 242,964 shows across its lifetime, showing the massive scale of its release and the endurance it has displayed against multiple waves of new competition. Perhaps the most significant achievement this weekend is the film's success on the booking platform BookMyShow. With a total of 33.82 lakh tickets sold, the movie has officially surpassed the lifetime BMS records of major hits like OMG 2, which stood at 3 million, and Housefull 5, which recorded 2.40 million. As the theatrical run winds down ahead of its OTT release on June 12, the film currently sits in the third position of Akshay Kumar's post-covid hunt. It still needs to collect 1.71 crore to beat the India net of Housefull 5( 183.38 Cr), but even if it crosses that domestic milestone, it will not be able to overtake the massive worldwide total of Housefull 5(288.67 Cr) to claim the second spot. Consequently, it is set to finish as the third-highest global grosser for the actor in the post-pandemic era, with Sooryavanshi (293 Cr) remaining the undisputed number one.

Suriya has delivered a truly compelling performance in Karuppu, a film that brilliantly blends fantasy action with a biting social commentary. Directed by RJ Balaji, the story follows the guardian deity Vettai Karuppu as he descends to Earth in the form of a lawyer to dismantle a predatory legal system that exploits marginalized citizens. This unique premise, especially the high-octane god mode sequences, has kept audiences thrilled in theaters. RJ Balaji has taken a more serious approach with this film compared to his previous work, and this change seems to be working well . Analyzing the cumulative data for the fourth weekend, the film has shown the kind of resilience usually reserved for all-time blockbusters. Between Friday and Sunday, Karuppu maintained a strong presence with a total of 2,893 shows nationwide. The cumulative net collection for these three days stood at 4.05 Crore, a remarkable figure for a film in its 24th day. This was supported by a healthy average weekend occupancy of nearly 29 percent, with Sunday peaking at approximately 36 percent, proving that the rural connect is still pulling families to the big screen. Karuppu has now become one of the few films in 2026 to successfully enter the prestigious 300 Crore worldwide club. It joins an elite list of blockbusters that have hit this milestone this year, including Dhurandhar The Revenge, Border 2, and Mana Shankara Vara Prasad Garu. While the film has faced competition, its ability to breach this mark so late in its run confirms its status as a genuine commercial success. The home territory of Tamil Nadu remained the strongest contributor by far, bringing in a solid 4.10 Crore during the weekend. Karnataka and Kerala followed with contributions of 0.20 Crore and 0.07 Crore respectively. This combined weekend performance from the South, totaling 4.66 Crore in gross collections, has been the primary driver in pushing the total India gross to 223.55 Crore and its worldwide standing past the 304 Crore mark. The footfalls remain incredibly steady, as seen on BookMyShow where the weekend saw nearly 73,700 tickets sold (15.38K on Friday, 32.22K on Saturday, and 26.1K on Sunday). This brings the cumulative BMS ticket sales to a staggering 44.67 lakhs for its entire run. National chains like PVR, INOX, and Cinepolis also reported robust numbers for the fourth weekend, contributing over 22,900 tickets on Sunday alone. PVR led the charge with roughly 7,800 tickets, followed by INOX with 1,800 and Cinepolis with 900. As it heads into the Day 25 Monday test, the film aims for the 200 Crore India net milestone, a target that now seems well within reach given this weekend's momentum.

Obsession Box Office: Hollywood Thriller Explodes With Massive 125% Second Weekend Jump In India

BY SACNILK

Mumbai, June 8 - The Hollywood supernatural psychological horror thriller Obsession has emerged as one of the most surprising box office success stories of the year in India and worldwide. What started as a decent theatrical run has transformed into a genuine phenomenon thanks to exceptional word-of-mouth and sustained audience interest. The film's remarkable growth during its second weekend has caught the attention of trade analysts and exhibitors alike, making it one of the strongest-performing Hollywood releases of recent times. Obsession collected approximately 9.30 crore gross during its opening weekend. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) While the initial numbers were solid, the film's real strength became evident in the days that followed as positive audience reactions translated into stronger daily collections. Instead of witnessing the usual post-weekend decline, the thriller continued to attract viewers, setting the stage for a massive second weekend. Massive 125% Jump In Second Weekend After grossing approximately 22.10 crores in the first week, the film grossed 21 crore during its second weekend, which is almost equal to its full opening week numbers. However, what is most stunning is that the film registered a phenomenal +125% jump compared to its opening weekend collections of 9.30 crore, which is unheard of. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) Such a jump is extremely rare, particularly for a Hollywood thriller, and reflects the strong word-of-mouth that the film has generated among Indian audiences. The second-weekend performance effectively turned Obsession into a breakout theatrical success. With the outstanding second-weekend haul, Obsession has now amassed approximately 43.15 crore gross in India within just 10 days of release. The film's daily box office trend remains exceptionally strong, indicating that audience demand continues to grow. Multiplex chains across major cities have reported healthy occupancies, especially during evening and night shows. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) Obsession India Gross Collection S. No. Period India Gross Collection 1 1st Week ₹ 22.10 Cr 2 2nd Friday ₹ 3.95 Cr 3 2nd Saturday ₹ 8.10 Cr 4 2nd Sunday ₹ 9.00 Cr 5 Total (10 Days) ₹ 43.15 Cr Can It Reach 100 Crore? Given its current momentum, Obsession appears to be heading comfortably toward the 75 crore gross milestone in India. The film has already demonstrated extraordinary staying power, and if it continues to hold well over the coming weeks, a lifetime total approaching 100 crore gross cannot be ruled out. While the road to the century mark is still a long way, the film's current trend suggests that it has the potential to achieve numbers that seemed unimaginable before its release.

Based on early estimates for the first Sunday, the film has touched the 150 Crore net mark within four days of its release. While reaching this figure quickly is a notable benchmark for any major production, the momentum will need to remain very consistent to meet the high stakes involved with a project of this scale. The film is currently drawing a loyal audience in its primary markets, though its ability to sustain this across the upcoming weekdays will be the real test of its theatrical life. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) Examining the Sunday data, we see a modest uptick in collections. The film earned approximately 31.90 Crore net on its fourth day, which is a 10.6 percent increase from the Saturday earnings of 28.85 Crore. For a film occupying over 9,000 shows nationwide, this growth is stable but perhaps less aggressive than what the initial buzz might have suggested. It indicates that while the core fan base is turning up, the broader mass appeal is still being established in several regions. To provide a clearer picture of the domestic performance, the total India net collection now stands at 157.15 Crore. When factoring in the gross amounts, the total India gross reaches 187.02 Crore. The Telugu market remains the primary driver of these numbers, while the contributions from other language versions are providing a necessary but slower build-up to the overall total. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) The international performance adds another layer to the analysis. On its fourth day, the film brought in 4 Crore from overseas markets, taking the total international gross to 46 Crore so far. This brings the worldwide gross collection for Peddi to 233.02 Crore. As the film moves into the critical first Monday, the focus shifts entirely to its hold during the working week, which will ultimately determine the commercial standing of the film. Peddi Box Office: Sports Action Drama Tops 200 Crore Worldwide And Becomes Ram Charan's Third Film To Do So

BY SACNILK

Hyderabad, June 7 - Superstar Ram Charan's sports action drama Peddi is continuing its solid run at the box office. After a thunderous opening day, the Buchi Babu Sana directorial has crossed the 200 crore mark at the worldwide box office on its 4th day, emerging as one of the fastest Telugu films to achieve the feat. The film had opened to an extraordinary 110 crore-plus worldwide gross on its first day, making it the second-biggest opener of Ram Charan's career after RRR. Strong collections from the Telugu states, Karnataka, North America, and other overseas markets helped the film maintain excellent momentum through its opening weekend. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) Ram Charan's Third 200 Crore Grosser With Peddi entering the 200 crore club, Ram Charan has now scored his third film to cross the milestone worldwide. The actor had previously achieved the feat with RRR and Rangasthalam. The latest success further strengthens his position among the biggest box-office stars in Telugu cinema. What makes Peddi's performance particularly significant is that it comes after the disappointing theatrical run of Game Changer. The strong response to the sports action entertainer has helped Ram Charan bounce back in a big way, with audiences embracing his rugged and intense portrayal of the titular character. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}) Eyes Set On Bigger Milestones The film's immediate target is the 300 crore worldwide mark, which now appears well within reach if it maintains a healthy hold during the weekdays. The makers are optimistic about the long-term prospects of the film, especially considering the strong reception in Telugu-speaking markets and solid overseas support. Starring Ram Charan and Janhvi Kapoor in the lead roles, Peddi has emerged as one of the biggest Telugu box-office grossers of 2026 so far. The 4-day opening weekend is expected to be around 230 crores gross, but it will be important for the film to perform well in the weekdays, which will be crucial for its massive break-even target of around 500 crores gross.
