Io Shirai is the current NXT Women's Champion in her first reign. Io Shirai made her first official appearance for the promotion on June 30, 2018, at the WWE house show in Ryogoku Kokugikan, where it was announced she had signed with the promotion and would be competing in their developmental territory, NXT.

In July, it was announced that Shirai will participate in the second Mae Young Classic tournament. On August 8, Shirai defeated Xia Brookside in the tournament's first round in her WWE debut match.

The following day, on August 9, Shirai defeated Zeuxis in the second round, Deonna Purrazzo in the quarterfinals and Rhea Ripley in the semi-finals to advance to the finals of the tournament, that took place at WWE Evolution, on October 28, where Shirai was defeated by Toni Storm.

In her first appearance for NXT, Shirai debuted on November 17, 2018, at the NXT TakeOver: WarGames event where she and Dakota Kai saved her best friend Kairi Sane during her match with Shayna Baszler from an assault by her allies Jessamyn Duke and Marina Shafir.

Charlotte Flair vs. Io Shirai Match Added To 7/21/23 WWE SmackDown At Last Minute

BY SACNILK

WWE is constantly evolving, and this dynamic nature sometimes necessitates immediate plan changes, especially when concerns about COVID-19 persist, as the pandemic is not entirely over yet. Such an instance occurred on last week's SmackDown, requiring some quick thinking from the team. ## According to Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, the Charlotte Flair vs. IYO Sky match on SmackDown was not originally scheduled to take place. Instead, it was hastily put together at the last minute due to unforeseen circumstances. ## The situation arose because a few individuals who were initially scheduled for the show couldn't appear, primarily due to COVID-related reasons. While some may not have tested positive, they were in close proximity to COVID-19, prompting adjustments to the show's lineup. As a result, Charlotte Flair's match with IYO Sky was a late replacement, as it was not part of the original plan. ## Such unexpected situations may happen again in the future, given that the card is always subject to change in WWE. The company faces the challenge of putting on live television broadcasts, where the show must go on regardless of the circumstances. Ideally, WWE hopes that any COVID-related issues do not persist, as they have various ongoing projects, and altering plans is something they aim to avoid whenever possible. ## To stay updated with all the latest combat sports news, add Sacnilk.com to your Google News feeds and follow us on Twitter.
