Los Angeles, September 9, 2021: Marvel Studios' "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" has achieved what the fellow Marvel movie "Black Widow" couldn't achieve. With a backing of solid critics and audiences reviews, "Shang-Chi", has stormed past $100 million domestic box office in just 5 days, becoming the fastest to reach the milestone during the covid-19 pandemic.
After nabbing a massive $19.4 million on Monday, the Simu Liu/Awkwafina/Tony Leung/Michelle Leung starrer collected another approx $6.90 million on Tuesday, helping itself to cross the rare $100 million at the North America box office amid the pandemic. After Tuesday's collection, "Shang-Chi" stands at approx $101.50 million.
The Scarlett Johansson fronted "Black Widow" took 6 days to reach the $100 million, however, it was also available on Disney+ at the same time as it was running in theaters. "Shang-Chi" also becomes the fastest to $100 million domestic gross since Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker nabbed $177 million in 2019.
Globally, the Destin Daniel Cretton directorial has earned approx $170 million so far. In India, "Shang-Chi" has earned around Rs 16 crore gross in the first five days. The first Asian Marvel superhero movie, "Shang-Chi" is the highest-rated comic book movie on Rotten Tomatoes with a solid 98% score by the audiences.
"Shang-Chi's" thundering box office success has a lot of things to say in the most positive way. The movie opened during the devastating pandemic and it is the first Marvel movie to open exclusively in theaters unlike "Black Widow". Disney CEO called the theatrical release of "Shang-Chi" an experiment for the company amid the testing times. Plus, the many trade analysts had predicted it could be the worst MCU debut movie. And now, surpassing all odds, "Shang-Chi" is currently the number 1 movie worldwide.
The superhero movie is having fun at the box office and it is a great sign for the theatrical business, which has suffered a lot because of the pandemic. The exhibitors will be hoping for the same success with the upcoming tentpole movies such as "Venom 2", "No Time To Die", "Eternals", and "Spider-Man: No Way Home".
Time taken to reach $100 million at the domestic box office -
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings - 5 days
Black Widow - 6 days
Fast & Furious 9 (F9) - 8 days
