Cody Rhodes' Loss To Roman Reigns Was The Right Decision, Says Meltzer
Marietta, August 11, 2023 - Cody Rhodes fell short in his attempt to dethrone Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Title at WrestleMania 39. Rhodes, returning from injury, entered the men's Royal Rumble at number 30, emerged victorious, and earned a shot at Reigns. Despite expectations for Rhodes to snatch the title from "The Tribal Chief," the outcome was surprising.
Before the match, there were rumors that Reigns would take a break, but that didn't come to pass. In reality, those with insider knowledge were aware that Rhodes wouldn't emerge victorious, although most fans thought it made sense given Reigns' lengthy championship reign.
Since then, Reigns has continued his storyline with The Usos, while Rhodes concluded a three-part feud with Lesnar, ultimately prevailing with a 2-1 record against "The Beast Incarnate."
In the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer conveyed that WWE insiders firmly believe that the decision not to crown Rhodes as champion was vindicated by the subsequent growth. They hold the notion that someday, this decision might be reconsidered.
