Mumbai, November 24 - China's war epic film "The Battle At Lake Changjin", which recently surpassed fellow Chinese film "Hi, Mom" to become the highest-grossing film of 2021 worldwide, has now taken over the title of a highest-grossing movie ever in China.
Directed by Chen Kaige, Hark Tsui, and Dante Lam, "The Battle At Lake Changjin" dethrone the previous leader, 2017's "Wolf Warrior 2" through Wednesday (November 24). Lake Changjin currently stands an estimated RMB 5.693B ($890M) after 56 days in release. Wolf Warrior 2 had grossed an estimated RMB 5.68B during its entire box office run.
Interestingly, both "Lake Changjin" and "Wolf Warrior 2" were led by actor Wu Jing among others. Wu Jing had also directed "Wolf Warrior 2". Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Zhao Lijian praised the achievement on social media, offering his "congratulations" to actor Wu Jing "for surpassing himself".
"The Battle at Lake Changjin" is reportedly China's most expensive film ever made with a production budget of approx $200 million. It glorifies Chinese sacrifices and heroism during the real-life battle in 1950 that took place at the eastern front in the second battle of the War to Resist U.S. Aggression and Aid Korea.
Earlier this month, China's Film Administration outlined its 14th "Five-Year Plan" for the development of Chinese films with plans to increase movie screens, promote 10 domestic tentpoles each year, and which calls for 50 films per annum to earn more than RMB 100M ($15.6M) in the market. Domestic movies should also account for over 55% of the total annual box office. (via Deadline).
