Box Office: 'Super Mario Bros.' Levels Up With Historic $375+ Million Worldwide Opening

Los Angeles, April 9 - The box office lit up, again!
Illumination and Universal Pictures video game adaptation feature The Super Mario Bros. Movie packed a historic punch at the box office, grossing a record $377.5 million worldwide over the 5-day opening weekend and becoming the biggest opener ever for an animated title.
At the domestic (North America), Super Mario Bros. demolished all the records for a video game adaptation movie after a sensational $204 million 5-day weekend. It has become the highest-grossing videogame cinematic adaptation ever domestically, beating "Sonic The Hedgehog 2's" entire run of $190.90 million, in just 5 days.
According to trade analyst Luiz Fernando, the film scored the biggest full weekend ever domestically for an animation film and 3rd biggest 3-day Easter weekend and the 2nd biggest 3-day weekend ever for an animation with $146.4 million. Call it insane or anything, Super Mario Bros. will cross the entire domestic run of Marvel Studios' "Ant-Man 3's" $213 million in just 6 days to become the biggest movie of 2023.
Overseas, the movie grossed a gigantic $173 million over 70 markets. The worldwide opening of $377.5 million is the biggest of all time for an animated movie, beating "Frozen 2's" $358.2 million and the 18th biggest opening for all the movies.
The top 10 markets of the film through 1st Sunday are as follows - North America ($204.6M), Mexico ($27.4M), the U.K. ($19.6M), Germany ($14M), China ($12M), France ($10.4M), Spain ($8.6M), Australia ($8.3M), Italy ($7.9M), and Brazil ($6.9M).
