Box Office: Indians Spent 750 Crores To Watch 'Gadar 2', 'Jailer', 'OMG 2', and 'Bholaa Shankar' During Independence Day 2023 Week

Mumbai, August 18 - Indians love big-screen cinema, and this has been proved once again with the historical box office collection of the films released during the Independence Day 2023 week. It was a momentous week for Indian cinema which films across languages bring massive crowds in theaters.
Sunny Deol-led sequel to a 22-year-old period action drama movie "Gadar: Ek Prem Katha", along with superstar Rajinikanth's action thriller "Jailer", superstar Akshay Kumar's social comedy-drama "OMG 2", and megastar Chiranjeevi's action drama "Bholaa Shankar" had a massive contribution to the historical biz as these four movies combined grossed around 750 crores at the Indian box office during the Independence Day week.
Gadar 2: The Katha Continues, which was released on August 11, stole the show with sensational first-week collection at the Indian box office. Directed by Anil Sharma, the movie scored the all-time second-biggest first week in Hindi with a gross collection of approx. 336 crores (284.63 crores net). Overseas, it grossed approx. 33 crores, for the worldwide opening week of 369 crores.
Superstar Rajinikanth makes a roaring comeback with Jailer which is nearing 300 crores at the domestic box office. In its extended 8-day first week, the movie grossed approx. 277 crores and becomes the highest-grossing Tamil movie of the year. Worldwide, it has crossed 400 crores as it currently stands at approx. 427 crores, including 150 crores overseas collection.
OMG 2, the social comedy-drama which is the sequel to 2012's movie "Oh My God - OMG", also had a fantastic first week which saw it crossing 100 crores domestic gross. Though Akshay Kumar was not the main lead, the movie kind of marks a comeback for the actor who was under pressure with back-to-back flops. "OMG 2", which has Pankaj Tripathi in the central role with Yami Gautam, grossed approx. 100.50 crores (85.05 crores net) in India while worldwide collection stands at 120 crores in the first week.
Among the Independence Day 2023 week releases, megastar Chiranjeevi's Bholaa Shankar turned out to be a big let down despite being the 4th biggest grosser during the same week. It has turned out to be one of the biggest disasters in Telugu cinema featuring a top star. In its first week, the movie grossed just approx. 34 crores gross in India while worldwide collection is 40 crores.
The combined domestic gross collection of the aforementioned four movies is approx. 747 crores with approx. 3.97 crores footfalls, and at the same time, the worldwide collection of these movies stands at 950+ crores gross.
