Alia Bhatt's 'Gangubai Kathiawadi' Tops Netflix's Viewership In The Opening Week

Mumbai, May 4 - Alia Bhatt's recently released box office hit "Gangubai Kathiawadi" has made a smashing debut on Netflix, securing the number 1 spot among the most viewed non-English movies globally in its opening week.

Directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, "Gangubai Kathiawadi" was released in theaters on February 25 and became a box office hit by grossing approx. 190 crores worldwide. It completed 8 weeks in theaters before it was made available on Netflix on April 26. Not so surprisingly, the movie has become an instant hit on the OTT as well.



"Gangubai Kathiawadi" was the most viewed non-English movie worldwide on Netflix in the week from April 25 to May 1. The movie scored 13.8 million viewing hours in its first 6 days and secured the top spot, becoming the first Indian movie on Netflix to achieve this. Spanish movie, "Honeymoon with My Mother" was the second most-watched movie with 10.6 million hours, though it was released on April 29.

Talking about "Gangubai Kathiawadi", the film is trending in the top 10 in 25 countries on Netflix. It is currently the platform's number One movie in India, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Maldives, Oman, Pakistan, Singapore, Sri Lanka, and the United Arab Emirates while it is also in the top 10 in Canada, Trinidad, and Tobago, United Kingdom, Kenya, South Africa, Australia, among others.

"Gangubai Kathiwadi" is loosely based on the true story of Gangubai Harjivandas, popularly known as Gangubai Kothewali, whose life was documented in the book Mafia Queens of Mumbai written by S. Hussain Zaidi. The film depicts the rise of a simple girl from Kathiawad who had no choice but to embrace the ways of destiny and swing it in her favor.

Produced by Jayantilal Gada and Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the movie also stars Shantanu Maheshwari, Vijay Raaz, Indira Tiwari, and Seema Pahwa in pivotal roles with Ajay Devgn featuring in an extended cameo appearance.
