There were a half dozen options thrown his way since the fall. ## Sometime towards the summer or fall of 2022, after the major WWE regime switch, per Fightful Select, Stone Cold Steve Austin was approached with the possibility of facing Brock Lesnar. Austin would decline, and a subsequent offer was made for a possible match with Roman Reigns. However, the report further details that there was a huge disparity in payout, with the pitched Lesnar match nowhere approaching that of the Reigns offer. ## Later in the fall, internal WWE documents had Brock Lesnar scheduled to face Gunther. That was listed as the plan as of November 21, heading into Survivor Series, with news leaking to WrestlingNews.co a few weeks later. The reason wasn't given as to why this match was nixed or by who, but sources indicated that by the time that news emerged, the match was nixed. ## It's worth noting the Intercontinental Title wasn't mentioned whatsoever internally for this match. For the past several months, Gunther's plan has been solidly in place, and told Gunther/Brock was not considered for any extended period of time. ## As one can imagine, Bobby Lashley was also on the table for a possible Brock Lesnar WrestleMania match. However, things are not clear as to what happened to cause that one to be off, but that led to Lashley facing Bray Wyatt...who was also pitched for Lesnar. ## Bray Wyatt was pitched as a possible opponent for WrestleMania right before WWE Elimination Chamber. Sources familiar with the situation claim that Brock himself nixed the idea. That leads us to Omos. That is the current plan for WrestleMania, though it was hinted to us that there was an undisclosed "backup," but that it isn't factored into creative plans. It was never confirmed who pitched the match. However, it was confirmed that Brock Lesnar personally approved the Omos match. ## WrestleVotes had implied on Twitter, and later intimated to Fightful that Vince McMahon was involved with pushing for this match to happen. It wasn't a Vince McMahon decision, and that Vince McMahon has had no contact with creative directly. Last week, Fightful reported that one talent believed McMahon had more of an influence on creative than publicly believed, which was echoed by others on the roster, before WWE told that wasn't true. WWE WrestleMania 39, also known as WrestleMania Goes Hollywood took place over two nights on April 1st and 2nd, 2023, at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. The event was originally planned for WrestleMania 37's location before the COVID-19 pandemic caused its relocation. The hosts for the event were wrestler The Miz and rapper Snoop Dogg. ## WrestleMania 39 marked the sixth time the event was held in Greater Los Angeles and the seventh time in the state of California overall. The event also saw Triple H take over creative control for the first time after Vince McMahon's retirement as Chairman and CEO of the company in July 2022. Although McMahon returned as Executive Chairman in January 2023, this did not affect Triple H's position. Additionally, WrestleMania 39 was the first to be livestreamed on Binge in Australia. After the event, on April 3rd, it was announced that the McMahon family had sold the company to Endeavor, making it the last WrestleMania under their ownership. ## The card featured a total of 15 matches, with eight on Night 1 and seven on Night 2. The main event for Night 1 saw Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn defeat The Usos to win the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championship and end their record-setting title reign of 622 days. This was the first time a tag team championship match was the main event of a WrestleMania, and only the second time a tag team match had been the main event, with the first being WrestleMania I in March 1985. Other notable matches included Seth "Freakin" Rollins defeating Logan Paul, Rhea Ripley defeating Charlotte Flair to win the SmackDown Women's Championship, and Austin Theory defeating John Cena in the opening bout to retain Raw's United States Championship. ## Pat McAfee made his in-ring return, and Snoop Dogg made his WWE in-ring debut, both winning impromptu matches against The Miz on Night 1 and Night 2, respectively. The main event for Night 2 saw Roman Reigns defeat Cody Rhodes to retain the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship, making him the second wrestler after Hulk Hogan to enter three consecutive WrestleManias as world champion during the same reign and the only wrestler to defend a world championship at each. Other notable matches included Edge defeating "The Demon" Finn Bálor in a Hell in a Cell match, Gunther retaining SmackDown's Intercontinental Championship against Sheamus and Drew McIntyre in a triple threat match, and Brock Lesnar defeating Omos in the opening bout. Night 2 also saw the return of Shane McMahon, who last appeared at the 2022 Royal Rumble. ## Critics generally praised the event, particularly the Snoop Dogg match against The Miz, the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championship match, the Hell in a Cell match, the Men's WrestleMania Showcase fatal four-way tag team match, Logan Paul vs. Seth "Freakin" Rollins, the six-woman tag team match, and Rey Mysterio vs. Dominik Mysterio. An interesting showdown has been announced between Roman Reigns and Sami Zayn at Saturday's house show. ## On March 4, 2023 at a WWE live event, Reigns will be making a rare appearance when he faces Sami Zayn for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship. Originally, WWE advertised Reigns teaming with Solo Sikoa to face Zayn and Kevin Owens in the headliner. ## However, the arena notified today that Zayn vs. Reigns 2 will happen at this show. This will mark Reigns’ first house show match since September 24, 2022, when he beat AJ Styles in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. ## Roman Reigns defeated Zayn to retain the Undisputed WWE Universal Champion at WWE Elimination Chamber PLE earlier this month. Lita and Becky Lynch are the new Women's Tag Team Champions. ## Becky Lynch and Lita have formed an intimidating red-headed union, as Lita came to the aid of Lynch during The Man’s Steel Cage Match with Bayley. The following week, Lynch and Lita raided Bayley's show “Ding Dong, Hello!” ## Now the two teamed up against Dakota Kai and IYO SKY to attempt to win Tag Team Championship Gold, a feat neither has achieved in their storied careers. ## In the final moments, Trish Stratus made her way into the ring and unloaded on Bayley, and Lita finally tagged in to hit some nasty moves on IYO SKY. Lita hit the moonsault to win the match for her team. ## Trish Stratus was set to return during the Ding Dong Hello segment with Bayley, but it didn't end up happening. A long-time forged plan is set to be executed at WWE WrestleMania 39. ## On the February 27 edition of WWE Raw, Finn Balor challenged Edge to a match at WrestleMania 39. Edge is still to confirm that match, If Edge accepts the challenge, it will be his second singles match against Balor. ## They first locked horns at the Extreme Rules premium live event in 2022 in an I Quit match. Balor was victorious in that bout.
