Tom Cruise Gives His First Reaction After Historic Opening Weekend of 'Top Gun: Maverick'

Los Angeles, June 1 - Tom Cruise's Top Gun: Maverick waited for more than two years to release in theaters and once it was released, the audience made sure it become a memorable outing on the big screen as well as at the box office.

Over the opening weekend, Top Gun 2 not only became the number 1 movie at the worldwide box office but also set a new record for Memorial Day weekend at the domestic box office, and also the biggest opening ever for Tom Cruise. The movie grossed a whopping $160.5 million over the 4-day weekend with coveted A+ CinemaScore. Worldwide, it has crossed $300 million in just 6 days, after approx, $140 million internationally.



Overwhelmed with the historic opening of the movie, Tom Cruise gave his first reaction to the film's box office start via social media. He took to Twitter and thanked the audience for watching the movie in cinemas and making it a historic opening weekend.

The opening weekend box office numbers of this 1986 movie's sequel aren't surprising, considering high critical acclaim. The movie has a near-perfect critic and audience scores on Rotten Tomatoes with 97% and 99% respectively. It is currently the joint top-rated movie for Tom Cruise.

Directed by Joseph Kosinski, the film stars Tom Cruise as Captain Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, a test pilot, alongside Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, Ed Harris, and Val Kilmer. Cruise and Kilmer reprise their roles from the first film, and the film is dedicated to Top Gun director Tony Scott, who died in 2012.
